Okay, I'm going to see for myself

I keep reading about how much SOE sucks and how bad this game is, and I just can't stand it anymore.  I'm downloading the trial and seeing for myself (Ugh, about 10 hours left downloading on my cable modem).  I have never played the game before, so I couldn't care less about how the game played "back in the day."  I'm only interested in how the game plays today.   So with that in mind, do you have any pointers or helpful advice for a first time newb player?  Thanks!

I've been playing the game from the get go, the main thing is to keep busy, there are A LOT of mission/quests to do.  Each will help you level as you go.

I always find people as "What do I do now?"..  this is what you do... have fun... PVP... PVE...look for loot...  hang out... thats what I do.

I suggest going through the whole tutorial, it's pretty cool and you can easily gain a lot of levels there.

    1) Do the entire Legacy Quest from start to finish (will take  you to your mid 50s)

    2) Register on the official SOE:SWG forum, you will only be able to post in the Mos Eisley Cantina (new player forum) for the first two weeks...but that is when you'll need the most help and the vets that hang out in the MEC are good about answering noob questions.

    3) Don't make your first toon a Jedi, Officer, or Commando.  If you're just trying to test out the game the early stages of those three profs won't put SWG in the best light.

    4) Do join a guild.....and preferably a faction aligned guild ("we take anyone with a pulse" guilds tend to be fairly lame).

On #3, what's your reasoning for avoiding those professions?  If they suit your playstyle, then go for it I say :)  Jedi = Melee damage dealer, Officer = group support, Commando = Ranged damage dealer.

Yes but there is nothing wrong with giving him the info and the means from a news source on the reality of the product and it's quality.

Better then me just saying... (The NGE sucks) and is a failure.   This way someone else does it but he has to read to see it lol :)

Oh I started as officer and I liked it :D, all profession have their ups and downs. Frankly I chose it cause I have fun using cheap buffs for my teammates and me hehehe

Also I don't mind your opinion but I prefer for him to test out the game then become another one of many MMORPG.com members flaming and abusing the game when they themselves haven't even played it

My "reasoning for avoiding those professions"  was stated the sentence after you stopped reading....."If you're just trying to test out the game the early stages of those three profs won't put SWG in the best light."  I didn't say...don't EVER play any of those profs...I said don't make your first toon one of those.  The OP is only interested in testing out the game to form his own opinion....he most likely won't be playing much past the mid-20s - and the three profs I mentioned are not very exciting at the lowest levels.  [Though they are arguably the most exciting profs at 90].

Rofl please don't make it sound like the only people that think this product is bad are from MMORPG.com... because I don't think that a couple hundred thousand people belong to the site.

We are just expressing to him that common sense and observation goes a long way when thinking about getting this product is all.   We are allowed to do so and stress that he do so.

At least just look around... God help him if he makes a toon on like Kuri or Gorath lol....that would be fun to see the reaction of "Where is everyone?"..lol

Its actually not to bad the players are mainly gone now but theres a few servers that have a decent amount still active. I just wish they woulda kept all the old classes and skill system . I think with  the stuff they have now it coulda made for a half decent mix
  • RainStarRainStar Member Posts: 638
I think we'll see some great stuff added in once all the expertise systems are complete.

Ahh so THIS is where Iskareot is hiding!

I actually started playing SWG again, it's no preCU or hell even CU but with the expertise stuff I am having a little fun again.

Unless they do more than they are currently saying in the trader revamp then crafters are still a litle stiffed though.

As long as SOE don't redesign the whole game again and actualy work on improving it then it might end up okay again.

Of course if they had just fixed/tweaked the original game in the first place they'd be far better off :)

ASH ole buddy... good to see you again.   Yes some of these newer players don't know... they also don't know I was a bigger fan of the game then they were.

The NGE however...... oh my.    I have stayed true to my choice of going rouge and trying to change it or make sure it's known for it's failure still.

The problem I have is that it's now over a year old and pretty much on the way out.  Crafting is fubard, Decay and loss is not there... so it's hard for me to take it serious.

We did have fun though back then didn't we??/     Loss or Ganks... It was fun.. Harder sure, but that was the fun part.

Always much respect man...   (For those that do not know, Ash and I were always on the opp side of factions  He was a BH and I was a Knight.. (old school) ---   When we fought and I would lose, it was part of the game....  He hunts I am the hunted... I understood that and enjoyed the fight.    It was always for the love of the game and NOT to be uber or whatever was said back then.

It's ashame that most people don't know that or saw it.       But that was back when star ports were full and people played the game for the love of it.

I concur with your statement.   If they had just fixed, made good on the promises then fixing the old game we would have been better off.

I float all around man though, WoW, other boards etc...   I still talk to the Brians when I get free trials and have fun....    :)

dont play this game. its not fun if your a new or old player. The game had no conent i have no clue what the f*** these guys are talking about. Every singe quest has the same exact meaning.

    1. go to a location

    2. Either locate a number of items or kill some things

    3. kill higher lvl things

4 go in a cave or building

    5. waste your time

Well that is your opinion. I agree with points 1-4.  However let the man play the game and come to his own conclusion.  If he doesnt like it he wont play it. It's not like it's costing anything.  I don't understand why people try to belittle and bad mouth people because they like a game. Not everyone has to like and dislike the same thing thats what makes the world unique. You know what in the end he will more than likely come back here and say he didn't like it.

In the end, arn't practically all MMO's like this? No matter what, you generally have to kill a certain amount of things or go a certain distance or use a move a certain amount of times to get better.

So, what I'm trying to say is just let the man figure out if he likes it or not; he doesn't need someone like you trying to ruin what could be an incredible game to him.
