I just want to say one thing : To all those people that are so negative towards this game, towards turbine and who are already predicting what the game will be like and how it will fail.
when you enter open beta , you WILL BE EXTREMELY SHOCKED at how well this game is made. no one could have done the job better, not bioware, blizzard or anyone else, infact turbine did it so unique that i think someone else would not have done it half as good.
and just btw, it is not out of desparation that they offer lifetime membership, it is called good Public relations, it is fact that most people play a mmorpg, then after a year or 2 take some time off, switch to other games and after a break retunr again most of the time around expansion time. not many stick around a full 2 or 3 years. this way they have your cash up front, weither you take a break or not, they still get paid.
$9.99 x 20 months ( almost 2 years ) = $199
majority will go for the special, so they will have the first 19 months payment of all those players upfront, it is only a limited offer. that is called EXTREMELY good marketing. unlike greedy blizzard.
Comments
Blizzard would have made the game more fun and exciting allowing for players to be evil or good, but the art and story wouldn't have been to nice. (The story in WoW is easily forgettable) Arena.net would have turned LotR into their personal motion picture, but with lack of choices. EQ would have just made a failed WoW clone out of LotR. But my point is that any of these gaming companies could have done better, but since no other gaming company will be getting this title, we will never know.
The one thing I expect out of LotR game is the ability to make choice and have those choices influence the world, the gameplay should only revolve around a small group of players (5 to 20 people) and the story should be very involving. I'm betting that Turbine didn't even include any of these and what we have will be a generic game, but we won't know until BETA.
( also, who says you can't play both good and evil ? , the game offers the choice to play either. )
i did not get an invite into stress test, i don't live in usa. i never said i did. my point was not that this was gonna be the best game ever. but simply that for every 10 posts, 9 of them are "turbine screwed up ddo and will screw this one up too, don't waste your money etc "
I remember when the athlon chips were launched, people were doing the same thing, basing AMD's experience on past ranges and saying not to waste your money on them etc, can you take a wild guess what 90% of those idiots are using today ??
i won't argue with someone who has no exprience in this game and is basing his comments on past tense. I stand by what i said, you WILL be shocked.
All you gotta do is place a pre-order now. You will get a beta key afterwards. I placed my pre-order yesterday and got my beta key today. I had the client download this morning and I'm about to leave work to check it out. If I end up not liking the game or what not, I will just cancel my pre-order. Simple as that.
No need to speculate if the game will be good or not. Go find out for yourself, Turbine could not have made it easier for people to get a taste of the game now.
Later all, I got a new game to beta test!
Well, I am not a Turbine Fanboy and my brother is a WOW fantatic. LOTRO is still under NDA so I cannot say much but.....
I WILL be playing this game after release. So will my brother. I am also going to be playing Vanguard but for different reasons.
I agree that people who are bad mouthing this game will be shocked at the stability, quality and content of the game. That does not mean it will be the game for them as it is (obviously) heavily story driven.
I have played just about every MMO out there and started with M59 years and years ago. I have also played other Blizzard games as well as most of the Bioware games (other then WOW that is) so I am not speaking out of turn. My opinion is this will be an excellent game for those who like LOTR and the majority of MMO players.
I miss DAoC
Wahoo guess I'm a fanboy, I like Turbine games, yes even AC2 towards the end was very fun. Proud Fanboy!

Umm the beta has been going on for a few months closed. I have a friend in it and he's been in it since September.

Uhm, the beta testing has been going strong since August/September, and before that a very solid Alpha phase that was better than many games in live right now.

Please get your facts straight before calling people liars. Closed beta has been running for a least a couple months now.
To me this just shows that you have already formed an opinion of this game without knowing a thing about it.
Hey Xer, don't you just find it funny how some people who don't even know what features are like Player vs Monster Player in LOTRO are and make comments like the beta isn't even out yet just come in here and start bashing it and telling people they need to shut up because they haven't seen the game yet?. Especially when the majority of folks they are arguing with are in the beta testing the game right now. Even when those people have been told many times to go to the official website and forums where they can read what the features are and that the game is months into beta testing. Just shows how really lost they are and if they only had a clue as to how stupid they are sounding. But no, they just continue to troll around this site and spew ignorance instead of going out and getting informed.
I know, we should help them!

Though we realize saying anything good about any game automatically makes you a "fanboi" of the game. It certainly couldn't mean you just like the game.

You can still find the thread on the first page of these forums. I'm sure the link in that post works as I used it not an hour ago. As for the Battlegrounds reference, I guess there is no right answer. Some people can feel it is like it and others don't. As it is impossible for everyone to feel the exact same way about a feature, both are either right or wrong. *shrug*

From this description, PvMP isn't PvP at all, but it sounds more like PvMP = Horde. Since Turbine didn't add evil factions, they are trying to be slick and adding Monster mission as attempt to add faction, but it's the same thing as playing the Horde from WoW except the gaming experience for opposing faction group is very limited. Wouldn't it make sense to allow players to play those races for free without having to buy them? By this description, PvMP isn't a new idea.
it is not pvmp, it is MPVP ( monster player vs player. ) basicly at lvl 10 you can go PVP on a HUGE freaking map, really HUGE, and you can choose to play as a monster ( of which you can choose 5 different ones ). you get pints you can spend and make him ubber. at lvl 45 - 50 you can enter the MPVP area with your normal character and also PVP. basicly good against bad, but with monsters and normal players. you get quests there, missions, you take over bases ( castles ) raid towns and villages etc. You can play both bad side or good side.
the nice thing about the MPVP is that they ussualy for huge raids, so you mostly pvp with 15 or 20 other players here is a link to a good discription of MPVP :

That is the review I refer to Lastera. That said, I don't expect this to change your mind in any way as you've made it pretty clear you don't like Turbine and you don't like their games and you don't intend to try it yourself. So...not going to debate you about it. If you ever need factual information about LOTRO I'd be more than happy to help you find it. I just don't feel the need to argue with someone who very clearly bashes a game for the sake of bashing or other personal reasons.
P.S., I understand not liking a game company and I am in the crowd that hates $OE. That said, I just avoid their forums and spend my time on the forums of games I like. *shrug*

Lastera, do you even know why they didnt add evil factions? Because it isn't part of the lore. Have you read the books ( and im not talking about the movies). You didn't often see orcs go "pwn" some Hobbits in the shire. Also playing the evil race as a normal character wouldn't do the books any justice to, considering many of the orc's and other "evil races" only answered to Sauron and were Sauron's slaves. Only "evil race" that might be able to work is the men of the east, or Haridrim.

Wait a minute, it's not okay not to include evil factions, but it's okay for thousands of dwarves, elves human and hobbits to participate in the destruction of the ring. If I'm not mistaken, only 9 people: 2 humans, 1 superhuman, 1 dwarf, 1 elf and 4 hobbits were the only ones who were involved in this journey.
