I like it and will be playing into p2p but its no EQ or anything.
The game has some good points and some bad and honestly a lot of the skills, content, and gameplay doesnt develope until your higher level 24+ (and even more of it 40+) so its hard for me to really rate it overall since I am only in the high 20s right now.
I am sure you will form your own opinion quick enough. If you want to see some many skills and such that become available at higher levels you could peek at the skills charts for the many classes and races on warcry or universal realms.
I like it; it's sort of fun, although nothing new. It's basically like any other MMORPG out there except this one isn't playta. It actually does seem (even in open beta) like it has trivial bugs. There are still some things that need to be adjusted but I'd be playing it on my free time if 1.I had a job 2.I had a better computer. so...it's really following the trend of most MMORPGs out there (same thing with better graphics). I like the high-fantasy setting though. Now they just need some game play that immitates it.

is it true that there are only two races..cause I could only choose from fighter or spellcaster
fighter and spellcaster are the only 2 base classes you can choose from. From there, there are branches: paladin, wizard, sorcerer, er whatever.. I forget exactly. There are 5 races:elf, dark elf, human, orc, and dwarf. As in lineage 1-there aren't many character appearance options and I have yet to learn how to raise my attributes or if they raise by your level.
are there maps?
You have to complete the training quest to get your map (one of the things I like about it in that you actually have to get a map to see where you are). Basically you go out and kill a bunch of foxes-or keltirs (probably) and you automatically collect their fangs and return to the guy that gave you the quest and then you get the map. That's just what I had to do anyway...
My character:LianaTatrei-lvl10 or so human spellcaster. I stopped playing it because of outside circumstances... :

BAD: Camera operation completely blows, character movement is jerky, very VERY few customizations regarding character appearance, Constant server downtime (to be expected as it is beta), the stupid lamers that name their characters things like Legolas, Gimli, Jim, etc, tutorial at beginning isnt helpful really...
GOOD: The few variations of characters to look pretty damn good, the dark elf females breasts bounce heh, spell effects are shnazzy, runs GOOD ON 56K!!! (so long as you have a decent PC)
All in all its a good game, but it isnt one i'll be buying and paying a subscription fee for, i'm savin my chips for WoW
Each time you pick a new class (levels 20 and 40) you have to do a quest to become the new class. The quest depends on what race and class you are currently.
Like I was saying earlier you just dont see much of the variety at the lower levels since you only get a choice of 2 classes per race (basically mage or fighter). There are a ton of skills and classes as you get higher level though. The links below wont work from here I dont think, I just posted the chart so you could see the class progressions.
If you go to http://www.l2orphus.com/skills.php you can click on any of the class names to see lists of the skills they get and at what level.
As for merchants there should be several (at least 4 major ones per city). If your an elf they are located in the outer ring of the city over the lake. There is a magic shop with a couple merchants and an equipment shop with a couple more. The biggest building in town (also on the outer ring) is the guild hall where the trainers are. There will be several for mages and several for fighter types.
Generally the head trainer will tell you about who to see to find out about the quest to change to your next step class.
Just because I grow sick of so many variations of legolas, I made a male dwarf character and named him "Leegolas" and ran around yelling "I am the Elf Queen!". :P
when i click log in..nothing happens anymore
Right now it's pretty much notorious for that... One time my older bro clicked the log-in button for 10 mins straight and then gave up for a while...

Probably can use it from any level or class, but not sure. I know my bro's character is a 16 elf fighter and uses both bow and sword...I've never used a bow, myself, being a mage... There are merchants in Lin2 but they're shops are known for their ability to evade customers...really I just run around town for half an hour or so looking for the right shop and then forget I don't have enough edena or the wrong spell book er whatever else...

Any character can use any armor and any weapon in the game. The only restrictions are if you try to use something that has a higher grade then you have a skill for. Nothing they sell in the starting towns has a grade so you dont really need to worry about that yet.
levels 1-20 use no grade items
levels 20-40 can use D grade items
From there it scales up to C, B, A and finally S grade.
Most fighters use bows as a secondary weapon even if they arent a scout. They are great for doing an initial hard hit then switching to melee weapons.
Bows are sold at the equipment shop along with all other weapons and armors. In the elf town the equipment shop has a little sparkling magic sign just above the door. The magic shop has a similar sign but with a book or something instead of a sword.
EDIT - make sure you buy wood arrows for your bow and not bone. Bone arrows are for D grade bows.
They are the same classes they just goofed up some of the names in the NA release. Right now the community rep said they realize some of them are different and there is confusion but didnt say if they would be getting around to changing them back.
The classes still have the same skills its a naming issue only.
Most people prefer the names from the chart above as they much more accurately reflect the classes. For instance the DE Bladedancer is the class that does the dual sword dances but with the name goof up the old human warlord gets the name bladedancer even though they dont use swords or do any of the dances...
Most people I talk to on L2 boards or in game know the old names better and will know what you are talking about from this chart.
