If all you want to do is run around and kill things for no reason, why not play a fps or a console game? Role Play is what makes an MMO! If you want to seeRP at it's best you can join us in MXO, you'd have to be real good to get in our guilds. Look up Furious Angels or my guild, The Collective. Best roleplayers out there, you guys can learn alot of us and soon enough, you'll agree with me. We even have forums dedicated to RP and story writing. Much better than "lol letz kil teh draggon for teh lewtz!"
Because there is nothing massive multiplayer about a FPS or Console game. that has to be the lamest arguement I have seen so far. MMORPG is MUCH MORE then just people talking in fancy language's. RP doesn't make a game an MMO,
Urgh how many times do I have to say this? RP makes me feel sooo stupid! Personally I do not like walking round going, "Hail, young chippy". Doesn't sound right to me, just makes me cringe when someone does it.

At least its not as bad as people named "Touchmypen1s" and "Bendmeover" running around at 2 am in WoW nude making special gestures at people. I'm sure they don't feel stupid.
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
Not being in character should be bannable in all MMO's. Oh wait, it's really called MMORPG. I hate idiots who can't stay in character, go play an FPS and leave the MMORPG's to people who actually went to college. Stop mixing up IC and OOC and always stay IC unless you're a mindless goofball. Sometimes I just want to go NUTS on people who are constantly OOC in games but I stay IC and put them in their place. Right now I play WoW, MXO, Lineage, and GW. Only MXO has a community that can live up to the standards the MMO game was made for, no one ever intended people playing to be OOC at all. There is no such thing as a RP server, they're all RP servers.
Let me start by saying that I like a good RP session now in then, especially back in the good days of SWG.
So, you'll understand where I'm coming from when I say you're completely wrong about OOC being a bannable offence.
We shouldn't be allowed to speak out of character? How does that make sense? You're saying that we should always act like we are none the wiser to our surroundings. You're also saying that anyone that doesn't agree with your method of playing should just be banned. That would be like me telling you that anyone who doesn't PvP or raid to obtain the ub3r l00tage should be banned. Completely wrong as well.
If no one ever intended people to be playing OOC, why isn't it in the TOS of every game? Why aren't millions banned for relating why they haven't been in game for a week?
Not to mention, you're insinuating that anybody who doesn't agree with you doesn't have a college education. This might amaze you, but there are many people who get home from their jobs, which require Post-Secondary education, and log onto their MMO of choice and chill with their friends. They talk about life, joke around, plan for the next in-game event, etc. They have the usual Guild drama, and they talk about how the "Pistol of pure pwnage" is too easy for people to get.
Again, don't get me wrong. I love RPing. I would quite frequently perfom acts in SWG for Cantina Patrons, which included and were not limited to: Drug Searches, Drug deals, Bar Fights, Weapon enhancements, Flirting with Dancers, etc. There were always assholes who thought you were an idiot and spammed crap. True RPers are unperturbed by these people. They know that most mature people will either play along or stay silent.
We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment; We are choosing to be here right now -Tool, Parabola

haha actually i find that kind of funny
it helps remind you that all the avatars that keep running past you are actually controled by players much like yourself
its kind of like being that one person who spends an hour doing nothing but jumping around the main city center and talking on general chat
If you join an RP specific server and then proceed to behave in a fashion that is contrary to the RP environment you should be banned from that server perrmanently. If you dont intend to roleplay than dont join the server plain and simple.
Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.
I roleplay as a guy in the 21st century playing an online multiplayer game.
Lol, Man is that true. So many people have told me that same thing.

You are waaaaay too uptight. No company who wants to remain profitable will ban players for such marginal reasons. That's why most bigger MMORPGs have some RP servers, some. To cater for the people who want to flaunt their amateur theatrics.

SOE has taken proactive steps to move this into place. Recently duing a player made RP event some 1337 pvpers came and tried to pvp. We summon a gm who banned all of them.
Not everybody enjoys to talk "Oh, woe is me, tis raining today!" in a game, and I'm one of them. There are more aspects in MMORPG's then just a few people meeting up to RP you know.
like what ? hunting mobs for hours, day after day, to level up and to... hunt mobs and boss for hours to reach the ultimate level then reroll ? is that what you mean ?
MMORPG are (or should be) Role Playing Games, worlds where u PLAY someone else like an actor. Instead of what we actually find fake games that are a joke : different kind of graphic arts for the same shit gameplay behind. Basic uninteresting quests, stupid NPC's standing next to a house waiting like zombies, uninteresting kids playing these games just to reach the ultimate level, thinking they will be seen as the most wonderfull champion in the world just because they are uberleveled.
MMORPG's are a disaster for imagination and dreams...
How would u define Roleplaying? At which point it would NOT be RPING?

Since RPing depends on your personal perspective, for some people your RPing maybe a bit too much, for some not enough and for some just the right amount. Hard to measure, hard to enforce. You could enforce letter typing (no L33T typing, etc) but word enforcing is hard to do becuase youd have to objectively decide which word in a sentence IS RPing and which one is NOT.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
There are valid RP ways to treat non-RP activities. Has anyone ever heard of insanity, for instance? Real Life is full of annoying people talking nonsense, why should Role Playing Life be any different.
RP has more meanings than just talking quaint or pretending to be in a soap opera. There are game mechanics that could encourage some RP in the larger sense, such as plausible ethical systems and character attributes reflecting ethical history. I wonder how many "real RPers" would find such rules too inconvenient for those times when they want to get out of the soap opera and just whack mobs.
From Personal experiance in WoW rp servers. OOC is nessisary. I would lose my mind if i herd hundreds of troll going around saying Aye and Mon all day. You need a little break from the rp once and awhile but still like to play the game. As for getting banned for it thats just stupid. Getting banned for talking...HA. Besides your version of rping could be different then mine. What gives you the right to ban me for rping the way i rp.

Why, so you can have your virtual tea party all by yourself? The reason I play MMO's instead of a game like Halo is because it is massive. What is more fun, fighting 4v4 or fighting where there are litterally hundreds of people on each side.

Im all for rp but what you want is take away a freedom to play mmo how they want .
Calling other players fps idiots like you do is alot saying about you a IDIO...........
Nobody force you to play mmo where players dont play like you so play a game your sure they only rp or shut up:P

The day a game comes out and im forced to say "how art tho m'lady" all day or "willth thou accompany me to slay...."
I pray a good freind is behind me ready to put abullet in my head!
agreed that is lame... but that is being a twat and not RPing (unless they are RPing a twat)
but i prefer not to spend time discussing current affairs with some dumb kid ive never met and don't ever want to - and i dont give a shit about someones ASL - we know you're probably a 14 year old little turd from Ohio or some lame ass place i couldnt care less about. I dont care about your private life of bedwetting or whatever
when i play MMORPGs, if i am lucky - i'm not role-playing, but living an alter-ego. i have zero interests the mundane details of someonelses life or discussing RL
The day that I'm forced to roleplay and would be banned for talking about transsexual porn, wireless mice and microwave burritos is the day that I quit playing MMORPGs.
The vast majority of people DO NOT want to roleplay, they want to chill out while doing some quests and bullshitting with friends. I P&P every other week with my friends and that is enough for me, I don't want to roleplay in a game I play on a nearly daily basis. There are servers and even entire games that require you to roleplay, so please find one of those and let the VAST majority of players play the game the way they want to.

In my oppinion thats not role playing at all. Its just an asinine rule set to give someone something to bitch about when someone breaks it. Its a game for enjoyment not an audition for hamlet. And as you pointed out the RPG part of MMORPG ill point out that every person i ever met playing RPG's like AD&D never had to say when they were speaking in or out of character nor can I recall any rules in the books where it said you had to. And fortunately majority of people don't share your outlook.

I think roleplaying consists of playing your character in whatever way you want. A universe needs idiots as well as heroes.
well maybe in a niche game, but if the majority of the player based liked to roleplay this wouldnt be an issue would it?
