UO Graphical Confusion!?

First off, I want to start off saying that I have never tried or played this game before yet have always been intrigued by it and had some question about the 2d to 3d graphics upgrade from the expansion in 2001.(not the new expansion comming out in 2007, forget about that one for now). I read on wikipedia that Ultima Online: Third Dawn, offered a new 3d graphic client to the world...but how come I look at other expansions later in 2002-2006 that have 2D screenshots again?

Did they release a 3D expansion and then release later ones as 2D again? I'm sorry if I sound ignorant but I am just trying to learn.

=)

Greetings, when you play Ultima Online you have the choice to switch between the 2d and 3d client when you play, the screenshots you were seeing were ones where people chose to use the 2d client and took the screenshots. But basically you can pick between 2d and 3d while playing.

Ultima Online uses a 3rd person isometric view.  No matter what client you choose to play it will always be this way, even after the new KR expansion comes out.  The 3d client just has slightly updated graphics, but its still the same view.

I'm not terribly current on what's available now, but I do know that the "3-D" client that was introduced with Third Dawn wasn't very popular among the player base, and the only reason a lot of people used it early on is that it was the only way to get to the lands that were introduced in that expansion.  I know that I for one, hated the graphics.  It looks like the Kingdom Reborn graphics will be far better though.
