Thoughts and ideas about MMORPGs

I see tons of posts about how current MMORPGs shuck, and sometimes actual solutions to fix that, so I thought I might add my own ideas. My MMORPG weblog is at

I suggest starting from the beginning. Those who want some of that to make some sense will at least want to read

or better yet, make a MUD as proof of concept. Better yet, rip some old 16-bit sprites, throw together a client with GameMaker 6 and plug them into a custom server in order to prove your ideas work in practice. It'll give you a dev's perspective on MMO design, and think about all the free graphical MUDs that'll be available as an alternative to the mainstream crap.

Hey, be careful about doing that though. Even a defunct game's graphical property can get your arse sued.

I've seen enough of these small-scale MMORPGs to think that another one isn't needed, no matter how innovative. Personal opinion, of course, but I don't think it's worth much putting hundreds of hours in a purely conceptual game at this time.

Fair enough, but it never hurts to try
