Im impressed that you can get all of this from a beta test. WoW is the same repetetive gameplay pre and post expantion with little depth and next to nothing to do at the lvl cap (PvP through BG and more raiding is the same thing they've given us for the past 2 years) but perfect if you don't want to feel like a part of the world. EVE wasn't my cup of tea, but I played the game itself to make my mind up of that, not the beta Guild Wars was also not my cup of tea and not an MMO in traditional sence, and again I played the accuall game, not the beta EQ also wan't what I was looking for, although it did keep my attention for a few months, once again I played the game not the beta If you want to know what the game is like and don't want to buy it yet, then wait for the reviews to hit the magazines and internet. Giving a halfassed review of a game while it's in beta is like reviewing a movie before it's been fully edited.
i dunno how to get that in a box like all you forum masters....but god what a dark post. why are you even playing these games...you dont like a single one of the games that you mentioned...
Accually I played WoW from release, accounts stilla active but after 2 years I'm a little bored and very disapointed with the Xpac. Played CoH for about a year and a half and Lineage2 for about a year. I just wanted to make a point that if your going to "review" a game, at least have the curtisy to do so after you've played the final (as final as an MMO gets) product after it's been released. You can't accuretly review a game while it's in beta stage.
Listen... (can you hear that?)... it's the sound of not giving a damn about your stupid opinions. If you don't like the game don't play it. Idiot.
Right... that's constructive. Just wanted to pull your post out from all of the others for my first response because you are so damned eloquent. LOL.
Sure, these are just my opinions. What does anyone have to offer besides that? When PC Gamer reviews Vanguard, what do you think the editors will do when they get your letter that says "HEY! Your reviewer was stupid, all he did was give his opinions". That's what people have to offer r-tard.
Anyway, I don't disagree with anyone who says that Vanguard has positive things to offer. That is part of why I was torn about possibly buying it (and ultimately deciding not to). My hope was, to be frank, was to get more of the positive aspects from people that could possibly make me change my decision. I'm not seeing them... what I see is:
-- Challenge. Yes, this game does have it -- but it's in the form of the same old grind that I'm used to in a lot of games.
-- Beauty. Yes, the landscapes are beautiful -- but, the characters, movement, and animations leave a lot to be desired. People like big, pretty explosions, etc.
And so on. As I pointed out, the problem with Vanguard isn't that it's a total waste. There are positives. BUT, it's like that analogy again: from far off in the distance, Vanguard looks HOT -- yet when you get up into the face of the game, and see what it really looks like, you see a lot of unpolished ugliness. Hot chick from a distance, ugly up close. That is what this game is.
Sure, the dev's could possibly fix things, but like the ugly chick with acne -- it's gonna' leave scars and nastiness. You can only fix something so much, and I just don't see this game working.
I was hoping Vanguard would be my Angeline Jolie of MMOs -- smart, sassy, unique looking, hot, and oh-so desirable.
Instead it turned into an ugly white-trash blonde out of the trailer park with acne and a bunch of bad step-kids. Sure, I can do that -- but I need a six-pack first

Wanna know what you wont see PC Gamer do, or any reputable game mag. or website? Review a game while it's still in the beta stage, or give a review based on thier beta experience. You know why? Because the beta stage of a game, whether it be open or closed, is not what the game will be at release. Not all of the content is available to you, coding has to be finished or tweaked, and some optimization will still need to be done to the engine and servers.
Would you base an opinion on a book before it was finished? Sure hope not.
How about a movie while it's still in post production?
How exactly can you give a review of something before the final product has been released? Even now a couple of days before the official release the only reviews you can read are from "r-tards" who use beat testing as a means of playing a game in advance of everyone else.
Hell, even some care companies won't allow a car that's not fully realised to be seen, even if they allow staff writers from a magazine test drive it. Why? because things change.
The experience you had in beta isn't neccasarilly the same one you will have at release. Things change incredibly fast between the time that they close beta and the official release date. Things get added, some thing removed; it's that time just before release that they put the finishing touches on what the devolper feels is the final product, well as final as an MMO can get.
It's a shame because people will come here to these boards and see this thread, read it, and sadly base a decision off of what some clown who played beta without any real understanding of what beta is for.
We won't see the finished product until the 30th when the boxes hit the store and everything is patched up for release. Until then your just giving a halfassed review of a beta test. Wich is arrogant, unfair, unprofessional, and "r-tarded", especially when you made it clear that you haven't played since beta. It's also unconstructive of you to give a review based on your beta experience.
I'd prefer Vanguard to be Mandy Moore over Angelina Jolie...
But putting taste in women aside, if you want to hear positives you need only look around for positives on the forum, it's not like people WON'T offer positives on the game. What you did in your post was state how you feel, it doesn't feel at all as though you're torn but rather stating it's a piece of junk and other MMO's are better. That's what I got out of it. The reason some people are answering so negatively is because this is probably the 100th post about the same thing. And I guarantee you there's going to be another one. I personally responded to this one because it wasn't like: 'boohoo this game sucks, where are my naked night elves, im going back to WoW' but it was something that one could address and discuss... unlike the whole 'this sucks and thats that' that I usually see.
For me, the positives of Vanguard are as follows:
- Large world. The first thing I did was to run as my level 6 monk all around the world trying to explore it. Some of it was barren, and others had very high level and angry creatures chasing and killing me.
- Variety of content. Get tired of killing stuff? Go craft, with how much time crafting can take and the dedication it could require, it's very likely you won't get done with it for awhile. Diplomacy is there also, though I myself haven't explored that one much. Not to mention the social and roleplay factors that will be associated with building your own boats/houses.
- Challenge. Yup, I got really tired of some 60 year old granny getting level 60 and sucking in WoW. And no, I'm not kidding, the game is simple enough for that. There's people that don't know how to play their class at level 60. In Vanguard, this will easily be avoided. By encouraging grouping, you'll get feedback and advice from other players on how you can better yourself. You'll become a better player or it will be very likely you won't make it to end game. That to me is the challenge.
- Beauty. The other one you mentioned, but really, it's in the eye of the beholder. I may like it, you may not.
- Community. There are a LOT of hotheads ranting on the forums right now, people that love the game just a tad too much, and people without working brain cells attempting to bash the game. But having played the beta some, and anticipating the people who will play Vanguard at retail, I think the community will be a good one mostly free of the WoW type of community. I know a lot of older gamers are looking forward to playing Vanguard, either for the nostalgia of EQ1 or simply because they're looking for something better. Either way, I think this is one aspect one can look forward to.
I'm sure there's other positives other people will mention. You just have to look right at the forums. Conversely, if you want to see the negatives, you can find those too. The game is buggy and yes, there's still content and other things that must be added. It's up to you whether you want to wait until it's more polished, or jump into the frenzy. Me, I actually enjoy the beginning of MMO's, the start of WoW and SWG was really enjoyable, as no one knows that much about the game, and it's great.
Either way, if you're still split, you should by now see both positive and negative sides and be able to decide if you want to bear it or not. If you aren't, and are posting a statement about the game, you shouldn't feel offended for people defending their game... though some people may have taken a step too far.
something else youll never see them do is give a bad review. They dont get paid to give bad reviews.
You're kidding right? Don't read PC gamer do you? First thing I do is flip to the review section and find the ones they gave bad reviews to because they're ussually funnier then hell to read. Not to mention MMORPG themselves have given several bad reviews of games. Good god the funnies thing to see in a game magazine is a bad review of a game and on the very next page an advertisement for that same game.
But you are partially right. PC Gamer and MMORPG aren't paid to give bad reviews, because they aren't paid to do reviews at all. They get paid for allowing ad space.
Finally someone agrees. This game fills no nitche what so over. This game is going to be over with in six months. If you don't carea bout my opinion you should because it basically means your not going to be playing this game once sony realises that funding sigil to run it is not very lucrative.
Man some real idiots here. Who cares what other people think about a game that you like. You pay to play whatever you like. Vote with your wallet if ya dont like a game dont play the people that do play will appreciate it. If your games are sooo good why are you here?
Listen... (can you hear that?)... it's the sound of not giving a damn about your stupid opinions. If you don't like the game don't play it. Idiot.

You have no idea what SOE will do to make VG a success and i don't either, BUT SOE proved that they will do all they can to keep a game alive (SWG).
But i'm probably wrong and you are probably right.......
All i know is i'm having a blast in VG and it's really pissing A LOT of people off some some obscure reasons.

And I highly doubt you're pissing ANYBODY off. I just find it hilarious that you girls come here and cry about other not liking the game.
Now go clean yourself up and stop your whining. Your just embarrassing yourselves. Go on move along and play your game.

Bullshit!.. Ever hear of something called a "preview"? You get a first hand view of something in development and opinions are stated as such. Happens all the time, in many different forms of media.
A PREVIEW and a REVIEW are two entirely different things. Vanguard has been previewed many times, it has yet to recieve a review. See, previewing is something you do before a product is released. It lets the consumer know about a product before it's released. A review is an editorial, usually constructive, about a product after it's been released to allow consumers to know what it is they may or may not be buying. Previews are void of opinion because the person writing it typically doesn't have first hand experience with the product yet. Sometimes a company may allow a reviewer to have a chance to sit down with the unfinished product to test it out, and even then most reputable people wont review it becuase it's unfinished.
How would a movie studio feel if they allowed a select few to prescreen a film while it was still in post production; when it hadn't had all of the sound and special effects done, in other words the movie was still incomplete but far enough along as to be a nearly finished work, and a few of those people then proceeded to write reviews of this movie, and in this review they tell you about all the missing things like footsteps or the sound of explosions and encourage you to steer clear of the movie because it sucked without all of these things. I don't think they would be to happy.
Here's a challenge for you. Find me a PREVIEW in wich the person doing the previewing rates the game. Find one preview on this site, just one in wich a staff writer was allowed to take what information they could from an open beta or even a MMO that hasn't reached the beta stage and told us that the game was either good or bad.
Reviewing a game before based on your beta experience is just wrong. Telling others that a product is good or bad before that product is finished is just plain wrong, and anyone that does such a thing carries zero credibility.
If you didn't like that game mechanics, if you felt that quests were dull and uninteresting, or that the game just didn't appeal to you then thats cool and understandable, but don't tell people "I played the beta and it sucked, it had bugs, it was laggy, some of the stuff they said would be there I couldn't get to, blah blah blah." Because guess what? No shit. It's beta, it's supposed to have bugs, its supposed to be laggy, some of the content they are going to test internally and not let you access.
Beta is not the final product, the pre-order access in truth isn't the final product. The final product will be here on the 30th and after that you can read all the PROFESIONAL REVIEWS you want.
Finally someone agrees. This game fills no nitche what so over. This game is going to be over with in six months. If you don't carea bout my opinion you should because it basically means your not going to be playing this game once sony realises that funding sigil to run it is not very lucrative.

Who the hell said I didn't like the game? Find me a post where I said I didn't like it! I personally do like the game. However it still needs some major work done on it before I'd plunk down my hard earned dead presidents for it. And I come here to find constructive mature points for or against it. But alas, all I continue to see is the same fanatical lovers of the game going hog wild on people who have a negative thing to say about it.
So as I said before calm down ladies and stop getting your panties in a bunch because someone shits on your parade!

Oh really... ?

Sure, I can do that -- but I need a six-pack first
Cheers!

Bullshit!.. Ever hear of something called a "preview"? You get a first hand view of something in development and opinions are stated as such. Happens all the time, in many different forms of media.

If you're have such a blast, why do keep coming here trying to defend yourselves?
And I highly doubt you're pissing ANYBODY off. I just find it hilarious that you girls come here and cry about other not liking the game.
Now go clean yourself up and stop your whining. Your just embarrassing yourselves. Go on move along and play your game.

Hmm... let's think about this one for a second. Did it ever occur to you that he might come here... (here being a forum for Vanguard) because he LIKES the game? LOL. Exactly why do you come here?
And, apparently he IS pissing somebody off, namely YOU!
Lastly, I think the vast majority that visit this forum find it very hilarious that people would actually POST time after time, day after day, month after month, in a forum for a game that they DON'T like.
Thanks again for the laugh.
