Geforce 6800 Mean New Computer??

cedoricedori Member Posts: 500

While I knew the New Geforce 6800 Ultra was coming out, does this mean you need a new computer to run it.  I've heard you need at least a 450w PS.  The card sounds great, and do realize it won't be out for retail for many months, but even then it will cost too much at first.  While waiting is always best for prices to drop, I'm still curious if a new systems would be better to run this card.  PCI express seems to be the next board coming and this is why I'm asking.

Toms Hardware guide gives pretty good reviews on the motherboard and video card, but I keep hearing some people say that g6800 will work on some systems now.  Anyone no or have a better site I could look into this more.  If I have to build another system, I want all the information I can get, good or bad.

Thanks to anyone that replies and has some ideas.

The PSU they say is recommended as 480 W actually, mainly due to the Motherboard getting much of the power usually, and the g6800u need about 12 v, I'd wait and see - the GPU isn't finished completely yet, nor are the drivers, and ATi have yet to show their new monster.

If I have to start wiring power directly into my computer I am going to become very annoyed. ::::07::

I feel the same, but I'm hoping my system will run it fine.  I've heard there will be 2 versions of the 6800, the ultra is the only one I've heard that requires 2 power connectors and can't use y connectors.

This is why I was wondering if we're going to need a new system or not.

LOL it looks to me that your system should do just fine for the next few years. Get your moneys worth and let the new tech mature a bit before you buy something that will not take hold.

As far as your video card goes, they way I hear it is that they are not even taking advantage of the 8X AGP yet.

the 6800 ultra req to be connected to two diffrent rails, and i heard the non ultras will only have 1 molex connector.  I dont see any point in getting the NV40 cards, i personally think they will run game pretty much un noticable FPS with todays game, the only thing i can see the NV40 be better then todays cards (besides that fact that they are in benchmarking test) is that fact that the NV40 has the new pixel 3.0 shader which makes farcry look like a whole new games. Id say if someone has no limit to the money they want to spend wait for PCI express then buy a new PCI express motherboard and PCI express NV40, then you'll be set. i dont see any point in buying a NV40 right now unless you want a really big boost in image quality or alot better FPS playing new games at the max resolution of 1600x1200.

Just don't be surprised if your computer starts to draw as much power as the dryer.

8x AGP is done with.  Once PCIE becomes standard, which WILL be within the next year, AGP will disappear altogether.  They don't need to reach AGP potential, they can just skip it now.  PCIE will blow it away.

As far as upgrades go, the only thing you need to worry about for the next generation of hardware/software is having a 64 bit processor.  Even Microsoft is giving in and making the next windows edition 64 bit only.

i head PCI express was really AGP 16x, so technally shouldnt the NV40 card take advantage of the allowable bandwith 8x can sustane?

If you re-read what I said you'd see that the aforementioned system would be just fine for a few years. First, as you have yourself stated, PCIE will be the latest and greatest NEXT year. Now, it will take a bit longer for games/software to catch up, no? (so hold on to what you have for a bit and get your moneys worth) Secondly, any new games/software will still be rearward compatible because any developer/publisher would be a fool to cut out the MAJORITY of the market that still have older equipment. At least for another year or so.

So by the time that the PCIE standard reaches a respectable market penetration, the video cards et al will be several generations beyond what they will be this summer (many of which are simply slap-dash attempts to get to market first)

As far as 64 bit OS's go, rinse and repeat.

PCIE is supposedly double the speed of AGP 8x, so people call it AGP 16x.

Anyways, this is going to be a sick card, hopefully it won't be like the nv30.
