The 7600GS and the X1600 are in the same price band, well in the UK anyway. Here's a head to head, they also include the 7600GT as a reference:

There's also a head to head of the 7600GT and the X1800 GTO here:

I have an AGP bus also and was running a Radeon 9800 Pro 128. I went for the 7600GT and I'm very happy with it. If you can afford to pay a bit more then I'd recommend the 7600GT if you are looking for the "best bang for buck" AGP card. Hope that helps.

If I were you I would hold off on the upgrade and save up for a motherboard, CPU, and video card so you can upgrade in one fell swoop. AGP is dead and it doesn't look like PCIe is going anywhere soon. Also, a 7600GT, while a good card for the money, is still a mainsteam card and won't run next-gen game titles all too well. If you're investing for future game titles as well (and who isn't?), getting a 7600GT now wouldn't wisest use of your money.
I would make due with what you have and save up maybe $500 for a DirectX10 video card and a dual-core 64-bit CPU.
I also have a 2.4ghz system... and I am upgrading because that right there is your #1 bottleneck on performance.

a much better option, 7800GS has 20 pipelines and higher clock than 7600GS/GT. Fasrter card that can be software overclocked as well.
As far as the rest of your system - that P4 2.4 will overclock to 3Ghz on air, 2Gb of RAM is sufficient if you dont want to do a full mobo/cpu/ram/gfx upgrade.

this card? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130061
also would i have to change power supply? cd roms? (will they hook up to new motherboard?)
Mobo you linked takes DDR2 800 and P4 take DDR 3200 ..... overall dont do this if you are upgrading just to play this game.
Get the better card if you are ok with the system overall and simply overclock the CPU/ Video card

I have a very similar system to yours, only with 1Gb ram, and have been going through the very same upgrading decisions as you. How old is your system? Is your AGP 4x or 8x? Do you plan to buy a new system in the relatively near future? It's not worth investing in an expensive AGP board if you have an older computer.
It looks as though your system, as mine, may be reaching the end of it's technological capability as far as newer games. If that is the case, you might want to consider a mid-priced board and save for a newer computer system later on.
The Nvidia 7600GT or 7800GS both would be good compromise boards for your set up. If you have a 4x AGP system, you might not realize much difference between the two, however, and the 7600GT is about $50.00 US cheaper.
I recently tried out both a Leadtek A7600GT TDH and a HIS ATI x1650xt and I have been satisfied with the results from both cards. I have been able to run the game on 1280x1024 Balanced settings satisfactoraly, with no external ini tweaks. The game runs about 10-25 fps overall, but with some significant fps stuttering in crowded areas and at the entrance to cities. Movong to 1024x768 and/or High Performance helps improve those, but don't expect miracles. Either card might produce similar results for you.
I finally settled on the HIS ATI x1650xt. It doesn't run the game quite as well as the 7600, but I like the color saturation and textures better. Basically, it came out to a subjective preference.
