Information on Vanguard...

I haven't been paying much attention to MMO's in recent months(except Warhammer) and recently saw that Vanguard would be releasing soon. I've read little bit of information here and there but never got a good amount of information about the game.

So I have a couple of questions:

1. Is Vanguard a pure PvE Game?(Is the PvE at least fun?)

2. How's the level curve?(does it take 1 week or 1 year to gain max level?)

3. Are both low and high level items hard to get?

4. What's the end game like?

5. What's new in this game? What haven't I seen yet?

Any help would be great!

    1. There are pvp servers. I should hope its fun or all the PVE servers will close soon.

    2. Levels are a serious grind. I'd say it will take me 6-8 months to max level and i'm hardcore.

    3. There are rare and common items at all levels. Some are hard to get yes.

    4. Raiding.

    5. Diplomacy, fellowships and several other little things

    6. 14.99/mo

So I have a couple of questions:

Well, it's mainly a PvE game. There are consensual duals and PvP servers, although I heard these are not very well executed, or at least aren't very fun. This definately a PvE centered game.

    2. How's the level curve?(does it take 1 week or 1 year to gain max level?)

I haven't gained max level (not even close), but it definately will take longer than a week. I'd say an "Average" Vanguard player will get there in 3-6 months, but this is just pure speculation. Leveling takes a lot longer than WoW, if you've played that. I'd compare it to FFXI leveling speed, if that helps at all.

    3. Are both low and high level items hard to get?

Not sure what you mean here... but the best items will be found in the hardest dungeons or from the hardest to beat/find mobs for your level. You can get average loot and equipment that will get you by, but for the great loot you need to risk quite a bit more, and be up for a challenge.

    4. What's the end game like?

Again, I haven't gotten here yet, but I'm guessing it will be Raid-oriented, as was Everquest 1.

    5. What's new in this game? What haven't I seen yet?

Well, the best information you can get about what's in this game is from the offical faqs, located here:

    1.  It's a PvE game at core, but has a FFA PvP server, and a team vs team PvP server.  Both PvE & PvP imo are fun, I've been alternating between two server rulesets.  It's one of the few MMO's released lately that actually gives player the FFA option.

    2.  Not sure how long it takes to level to cap, but it goes fairly quickly and easy from lvl 1-12.  Then you'll find having a good group will really help you boost the exp from then on.  I haven't heard much complaints on the leveling, it seems to be enjoyable for most people thus far.  I've been duoing with my g/f and we're having a great time.

    3.  Hard to get?  Not really sure, we got some cool items at lower levels, there aren't anybody high level enough to know what it's like up there.  But Vanguard is created with 60% of the content geared towards groups, and around 20% towards raiding.  So for people that dislike raiding, you'll find plenty to do.  I've played around with crafting, it's fairly complex, and you can make some nice items out of it.   Devs have said you are supposed to be able to obtain good equipment through crafting, grouping, and raiding.  So you aren't forced to do just 1 thing or another.

    4.  Nobody knows yet.  One thing to keep in mind is that, for most average MMO's out there, you advance your character by leveling to cap level, then raid, and perhaps you grab a crafting skill on the way.  In Vanguard, you'll want to level as usual, but keep in mind Crafting plays a big part in the game, so does Diplomacy.  You'll also want to get a house I imagine, perhaps get a ship built, and work on getting that flying mount around lvl 45.  So in terms of things to do at "endgame", well there will be plenty of things for people to work on to maximize your character in Vanguard.

    5.  You may find Diplomacy to be fun, it really has turned out to be a great change of pace when you get tired of leveling and want a break.   There are some interesting crafting options, as well as combat reactionary abilities, etc..  What draws me personally to Vanguard isn't really what's new, but what it contains.  You see, when I want certain features, I have to look at one MMO, and say, well this MMO has this I like, but doesn't have this other thing I like.  This other MMO has this I like, but doesn't have that other thing.  Vanguard for me has everything I'm personally looking for.  I guess to list some of the things that interest me..

-no instances, large worlds to explore, on land, air, and sea.

    -diplomacy.

-crafting, and I love lumberjack harvesting skill. chop a tree, you watch it fall, nice touch.

-get your first mount at lvl 10.

-flying mounts that you can fly anywhere is really cool.

-can craft your own boats and sail your own boats, with ship vs ship combat coming later.

-can build your own house on real world plots, not instanced housing like other games have it.

-caravan and fellowship features are both cool features, useful to many of my friends.

-large amounts of races and classes to pick from, with lots of different starting cities.

-can move while casting, reactionary skills, etc.. are cool combat things I like.

-you have different racial abilities to pick from to start, then you get to put points into your attributes as you level, and soon after launch they'll have an alternate advancement system. in other words, plenty of ways to customize your own character.

-the good 'ol EQ1, AC1, and DAOC feeling.  the only game thus far that have been able to give me those good 'ol feelings back.

-awesome awesome environmental graphics, very artistic style.

If you ask me, the only con I'd give this game right now is the heavy system requirement.  I built a new comp to play it since my old comp kinda sucks.  But imo it was money well spent, the game runs beautifully on my new comp.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for the replies guys. That helped a lot, I've been looking for a good MMO to play until Warhammer is released.

    Just couple things I forgot:

    1. How's the Combat and Casting system?

    2. What are some of the classes? and any new and/or interesting classes/skills?

Edit: Will the game be in stores?(release date is 1/31/07? for pre-order? download? sotres?)

    Thanks.

    1. Designed as a PvE game but they do have two types of PvP server, team and ffa. Team is based on various races banding together.

    2. Level curve is easier than EQ1 but harder than WoW.

    3. Yes. Best xp and loot is from dungeons and they have rare spawns, sometimes 45 mins or more for a chance. Crafters can make some neat stuff. Raids start from 35th.

    4. No one knows, beta went upto 40th level. Will let you know in a few months time.

    5. Caravans, Fellowships, Diplomacy. Not a great deal more new, a lot of very good things from many other games in one game. Horses, boats, flying mounts (we tried them in beta and are amazing), no instancing, detailed crafting, harvesting trees and rocks etc the list goes on.

Overall, if your bored with your current game and you like EQ1 immersion or WoWs playability, this game is for you.

This is not an easy game I may add.

Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve

We'll I played DAoC for almost 5 years, so leveling isn't  a huge issue, I solo'd a thane to lvl 50 pre-SI. If Vanguard has the old-school DAoC feel then I will need to pick it up.

Thanks again for the help guys.
