COH - is it good?

Just a few questions for the beta testers:

1- Lag?

2- what kind of quests?

3- + solo or group orientation?

4- Combat? dinamic? Boring or changes for each enemy? + dependant on gear or skills? mainly  slash away or u have to rely on special attacks?

5- Crafting?

6- How the loot system works? Drops are very important?

7- Can u optimize your gear?

Thats all i remember now. Those questions are very important for me. Their answer usually decides if i do or do not like a game.

Thx for your patiente :)

    1- Lag?

I have had little or no lag, there was alot of rubberbanding for a while but for me at least it has been fixed

    2- what kind of quests?

The quests are not like the classic EQ style thing where getting various bits lets you end up with a weapon or something, but there are interesting story arcs to follow, and much of the game is spent (for people who want to) doing missions for various NPCs in an attempt to follow these arcs, there are choices about which arcs you will go down, if you follow any at all, however there seems to be some argument as to whether the mission system can really be compared to classic questing.

However, if you do see the missions as quests, i think they are far more interesting than most, with battles and searches for items in instanced personal zones, and generally lots of badguys to fight :-)

3- + solo or group orientation?

I have been playing below lvl 10 mostly, above 10 people are saying it is a nescesity to group, and below 10 t is more fun i think, however as the instanced mission grow in mob count as your group grows, i would say small groups are the best

However taking 8 people into a warehouse mission and finding 2 Boss mobs round every corner does make for some good adrenalin gameplay :-)

4- Combat? dinamic? Boring or changes for each enemy? + dependant on gear or skills? mainly  slash away or u have to rely on special attacks?

I would personally say combat is the most fun part of this game, it is the main focus really, so they have put alot of effort into it, the combat changes based on who is in your group as there is a much wider range of abilities for each character, and styles for each character.

Yet again I only know the low end game, but you do have to watch for various mobs, for example there are a few types of mobs that will explode in a kamikaze area affect that deals alot of damge to any player close enough, and I have found that if a controller can charm these mobs from a distance, they will often explode and injure their allies instead of the players, but, there is not always a controller on the team, and if there is one, often they have not taken that power, so you have to do something else about the bomb mobs.   There really is so much variety in the player types in this game, rather than, basic healer, tank, buffer etc and I think the Mobs also have alot of variety in their attack styles.  If you like a fight CoH is for you.

    5- Crafting?

    None

It does put alot of people off, and I myself will need to play another MMORPG at the same time as CoH to get my Tradeskills fix, but as has been said before, you ever see Superman at a pottery class?

6- How the loot system works? Drops are very important?

Once again, superheroes are not usually portrayed rifling through the corpses of the baddies looking for loose change, so looting has to be quite different in CoH There are two main thing you get from defeating mobs, inspirations, which work like one use potions to heal or add defense bonuses in battle.  And enhancements, which you can use to add bonuses to one of your powers.

7- Can u optimize your gear?

Gear is a tricky term in CoH, there is no armor, or weapons as such.   The main gear really is the enhancements,

e.g. if you have a nice attack, it starts with one enhancement slot, you could put in a damage enhancer so the attack does more damage and kills the mob faster, or an enhancement that makes the power become available again sooner after you use it or something else, but if there is only one slot you can only increase one of the powers stats.  As you lvl up you can get a few more enhancement slots and choose which power to attach them to, so you might be able to add a damage enhancement and an aim enhancement to the power.  In some ways it seems alot more rigid in that you can't just camp a mob, get the best loot and be uber. Instead you have to think about what you want each power to do and your fighting style and optimise each power to suit you with the enhancement slot available.

Thats all i remember now. Those questions are very important for me. Their answer usually decides if i do or do not like a game.

Well, thats the answers as I have found them so far, I would also be interested to hear how things change in the high end game, but I have just been having too much fun trying every powerset i can to bother lvling past 10.

So far I would say it is good, but that there is lots of room for growth, and I would like to see how the community evolves once it goes live and more people (myself included) fix on a character and get seriously into the game.

I can't stress enough though that it does not feel like a classic MMORPG, it doesn't have the whole crafting, building a house, collecting objects (weapons, food, clothes, money) thing.  And if you want a totally full substitute for rL this may not be for you, but if you want to dash around having a laugh with people and bashing baddies it really rocks.

out of all the beta giveaways, signing up for beta last year, i still have not got in. Im starting to think CoH doesnt want me :(

  • MordithMordith Member UncommonPosts: 210

I did not have much desire to play a superhero game but I gave it a try anyway.  So far I am really impressed and am enjoying myself.

No lag that I have experienced.  There were some hiccups early on when all the beta testers were added, but that is gone.

As to solo or grouping, I like a solo-ability game due to time constraints playing.  With CoH, so far I can solo all I want and it is still fun.  However, the real fun comes with grouping.  It seems  extremely easy to get groups by just putting on "seeking team."  Battling in warehouses or in the sewers with a group of superheros is just a ton of fun.

The "auto-loot" feature for power enhancements is also great.  No more dealing with ninja looting.

If you haven't gotten in beta, I think it is because they were mainly inviting the pre-orders.

they arent having an "open" beta. More like a public invite where they are randomly inviting large amounts of people who applied for beta but never got in. They sent them out the other day, but the game goes on shelves the 28th so im not sure if they are inviting more or not. But ill tel ya, it really sucks considering i didnt get in.

I will never buy an MMO i cant try first anymore(not the disaster that was shadowbane and horizons). To bad, looked like a good game.

Now that the NDA is lifted I can finally say I HATE THIS GAME!!  What a big ass dissappointment it was.  The only thing I found decent was character creation and that wasn't what it was cracked up to be.  Missions are the same thing over and over and over and over.  It's either "find an item" or "secure a building" or "arrest xxx amount of thugs".  As far as graphics, I do not think that they are that great at all! As far as your power sets go you do not have much choice of character development.  Sure you have a ton of powers to choose from but you always have to choose based on your archtype.  I hate that you say choose tanker and you have to choose offensive buffing as first power set and offensive attacks as second.  You should be able to customize your character by choosing your own combonation of offensive, defensive buffs, ranged, melee, etc.Two words made this game suck even more for me FORCED GROUPING.  Oh god how I hate having to group.  I love going out and soloing every now and then.  And if you say "It's not forced grouping!  Your wrong!" then you know as well I do you're lying.  Let me give an example.  My character was a mutant blaster.  His primary power set was ranged fire damage.  So what happens?  I get a mission where I have to "secure a warehouse' and I get to the boss.  He was nearly immune to my fire attacks as he was a fallen hellion.  I was level 9 at the time.  He was a level 5 boss.  I had to go find someone who would group with me, run all the way back to my mission and then watch my group member kill the boss for me.  I have many more things bad to say but I won't and a note to everyone else that doesn;t agree with me...great!  You have your own opinion about the game.  I hate it, you like it.  By you attempting to flame me for disagreeing with your precious opinion is not going to make me want to play it.  So, if you have a response keep it civil or go shove your opinion up somewhere where no one will see it again!

Woah, bitter much?  I think its an awesome game.  Theres no other game with as much char customization and you can fly.  Hmm, I never had a problem soloing and I saw alot of other people soloing.  I have 2 level 10 chars.  Much better than any game on the market today.  I will still hold out for WoW, but it was a great time, especially for free.

I haven't looked too much into WoW and never really got into the RTS games...I was more of a C&C guy, but I am looking forward to Pirates of the Burning Sea and Matrix Online.  I thought that MO would be a flop, but after seeing the in depth trailer and devs commentary from the Matrix Revolutions DVD, I am willing to try it out.  Now as far as soloing in CoH, yes it is possible if you run around the city fighting thugs, but if you have to secure a warehouse and find a boss that is immune to everything you throw at him, then yes...that is forced grouping.  As for the bitterness...I apologize. image

Not sure what you were doing wrong, but I made it to level 15 with both grouping and soloing.  I have yet to find a mission that I could not solo and I am just a blaster.  The toughest mission I got was the one to stop the gang war, but that mission is infamous for being extremely difficult (but still doable solo).

I will not play a game that does not let you solo when you want.  Soloing is not difficult in CoH, you just get experience faster by grouping, as it should be in any mmorpg.

Anyway, sorry you had a bad experience.

Let me reply to this with something I posted on the CoH beta forums a week or two ago.  I've been in CoH beta for a little over a month and a few weeks.

Every MMORPG on the market right now is 14.99 or less, CoH shouldn't push for 15, or even 14. Then you have to consider the fact that a lot of them have had their boxed game prices reduced, to like, 40 (SWG) to 10-20(Ultima Online, AC, AC2, DAoC etc.). Those games offer much more content, and have lower prices. Comparing Planetside, and CoH is like comparing apples and oranges. Planetside is a Fast Paced, All Out, First Person Shooter. CoH is a Fast Paced, Role Playing Game. Two completely different genres.

I like CoH, I'll pay the monthly fee no doubt. It is however, overpriced. I am going to have to agree with whoever said after awhile you can really start to feel the grind. I haven't been here that long, but I can definetly understand that, and can see that it's going to happen much sooner in this game, then other games. Other games, you get tired of hunting/killing/looting over and over again. What do you do? Start a craftsman, do some pvping, open a shop/store, get some cool looking gear/artifact/relic. Just something to do when you're tired of the treadmill. So they should really either A. Add something besides the core simplicity of *You go kill now!* combat, like something mentions above. Or B. Have superb storylines that people feel they need to be apart of. Or C. Something I haven't thought of, that would be equally as cool/rewarding. Right now I'm going to come back and play, I love jumping into the game with some friends, grouping up, and taking on mobs. The problem is, am I going to love it 4-5 months from now? What can they show me that I haven't seen already. What's going to keep me coming back for more? Like Corbie said, the only game equal to the content of CoH is Planetside, and while yes it has the constant "Nothing but Combat" theme, you have to remember. It's combat versus other players, thats what keeps them coming back. CoH doesn't have that option (If thats for the better is an entirely personal opinion.) but it does need something else to keep it fresh and new.

    As I'd rate it now.

    Combat - Excellent

    Enviroment - Excellent

    Character Creation - Excellent

Everything Else (Gets boring after a month, Lag, Lack of Character Customization options) - D

    Content - D

Plain and simple, going out day in and day out, killing the same thing, the same way, over and over again isn't fun.  Sure the mobs might look different, but they still react the same, and have more or less the same type of attacks.  Soloing in the high teens just isn't feasible.  If you get in a bad group you will die.  If you die you get XP debt, which can stack up on you pretty quickly.  I started off really enjoying it, thinking THIS GAME IS GREAT.  Now I'm indifferent towards it, and pretty soon I won't like it.  They have a great idea, and if they added some content besides basic combat, it could be a great game.

I like the game but I do kind of agree with the negative reviews. One thing youll notice is most positive reviews make a lot of fuss about the graphics (who cares, I'd play a game with EQ's old graphics right now if the game was good!) or the customization...which means you customize your look (big deal) but not really what your charcter can do. Scrapper = you can choose different weapons but your stuck with that weapon for the entire game. One thing about other Mmo's is sure all characters have similar faces lol but you can at least get different armor and such.

Hah I remember back in the day in EQ I used to wear donals stuff even though it was a ripoff and some effects were not as good, just didnt want to be one of those clerics with the blue mixed with purple mixed with gold armor sets, rather just look cool ! You dont have that choice here
