I've been using the final version of Vista since November, and it's actually very nice.  It's just as stable as buying an up to date copy of XP (which is good at launch) and does not have the performance/DRM isssues that everyone wants to bitch about.  It runs quite well on my 1.73 Pentium M laptop with 1 gig ram and a 64mb ATI video card.  As for the DRM issues I have already very easily ripped CDs and Movies on Vista.  It's very nice and on the 3 computers I've installed it on, 2 of the 3 run it faster than XP.  It's definately good stuff.

Just bought the full OEM version of Vista Home Premium 64 bit off Tigerdirect for $120, $1.99 1 day shipping. They are doing inventory right now, so the item will be delayed by about a day, hopefully I can get it before the weekend.

I must say also. I was in Vista Beta program and I really liked it. I plan on ordering my Home Premium version of Vista pretty damn soon. I personally cant wait. I really liekd Vista beta and my friend has vista on his laptop and damn he loves it, as do i. And far as this whole (vista will slow down your computer greatly" thing. His laptop runs faster with vista than it did with xp and same with teh computer i beta tested it on. and i havent heard any actual complaints from vista owners so far. ive actually heard good performance increases.

The final version runs much faster than the beta version.  I think a lot of people complaining about slowdown are basing it on RC1.

I've been running it the RTM version for about 2 weeks now and while it has it's annoyances it also has it's upsides as well. The pop up that announces that it was blocked some start up programs gets on my nerves (comes up about every 5 minutes),  the Suse Linux like start menu is also a bit annoying, allot my my drivers/software are not entirely supported - some not at all and to be honest it's just another ram hog like XP (2 Gigs of ram). After some tweaking however it seem to run quite smoothly. However one other thing that I find annoying is that when my box is idle (IDLE mind you) my CPU usage is remains at about 80%, and my HD activity is through the roof! Even with no screen saver it remains about the same. I have not really done any checks to see what's going no during this time, but I plan to this weekend.

Seems to me all they have done is make Vista more like Linux in many ways - save for the heavy ram usage and other annoyances that vista offers and Linux does not.

One thing that is nice about vista is that when a program fails to run it offers you the option of running it in what I assume is a compatibility mode, which seems to work just about ever time for software, but not for drivers. All in all it's getting somewhere, but no where near what I would like to see.

In any case if it wasn't for me having to use Maya, and Manga Studio 3.0, I would still be running Linux instead of dual booting. But over all vista is nice at best, and serves it's purpose. But I suggest waiting till at least SP1-2 comes out before grabbing a copy.

Thats really weird because I checked my CPU and RAM usage when my system idles with Vista and my CPU usage stays at about 3%, compared to 4% on XP and my RAM usage on Vista was at 20% as compared to 12% on XP. This RAM increase is understandable because Vista incorperated a whole bunch of features that uses the RAM. Like on feature is it keep on hand in the RAM the programs you use a lot. But it doesnt always keep them in the RAM, liek if your playing a game it will release those programs that it pre-readied for you.

I thought it was weird myself. I'm going to have to check things out and see what exactly is going on.

I was at COMPUSA last night at 12 AM to get the computer that I wanted because it already had the new Windows Vista installed into it.  It was a crazy party type atmosphere...hamburgers / hot dogs and in pictures with Marcus Allen.  I even got interviewed by the Channel 4 news ( ... I believe I was the first person to purchase a complete system with it installed in So. Cal).

From about 10 - 12 I was just messing with Vista and the store and it was/is pretty cool.  I put it all together at home finished everything by about 1:30 then had to go to bed.  Installing the printer driver was the easiest thing ever (not that it is usually hard), but every was quick prompt and click.  I know that it is using a decent amount of RAM but I have not got to look into it much...comp came with 2 Gig (2024), but it is showing 1.83 on system check..  Also it takes up a solid 15 Gig of HD space...fortunately it is only 5% of the 320 total.

So far I am happy with it, from the set up to the driver installation process.  I will have to see how the rest goes tonight....I am so excited to be able to start playing games again.  Next up a new video card.

nVidia is releasing there GF8 lower series card in March. the best one I think is the 8600Ultra. its $170 and the specs are amazing and it has DX10 support. Or if your an ATI fan, ATI is releasing their dx10 cards in March too

Which version did you end up getting?  Have you run the update yet?  You'll automatically get a lot of drivers like video and audio through update, and some nice little extras if you get ultimate.

I have the home premium package (which I think is just a fancy way to say stardard)...they did not have any desk tops with Ultimate installed and they only had 1 notebook with it.  I am setting up DSL so I will be able to get all of the updates and everything after couple days.

Pyro...I am looking at that Nvidia ....it gives me a little time to save up after this little bank account bomb.  Mine comes with a baby Nvidia.  One thing I have not heard and maybe someone can enlighten me, I got a Althlon AMD X2 4600 (2.4Gz), do althons "team-up" better with Nvidia or ATi...or is it just a matter of preference as long as the chipsets match up?

Its really just a matter of preferance. At least for now. AMD bought out ATI, so maybe later there might be a little advantage with using ATI with an AMD, but the Athlon X2 came out before AMD bought ATI. And theres no technical aspect I see that would change this yet either

Something just occured to me. There are no chipset drivers for Vista anywhere on the internet, at all. None, for any version.

    Wtf is this about?

But my fear still looms because I have the EVGA 680i SLI motherboard, which is the best available and new, so im scared the drivers for the chipset wont be on Vista.

Just do a quick lookup on your hardware at their sites to make sure they work with Vista.

Well, theres the retail and then theres OEM. OEM doesnt have any support from microsoft and its basically just a product number and teh CD. Its what you usually do if you know a lot, or work for a company, or just need to save money. but then theres upgrade and full versions. the upgrade requires you have a previous version of XP

You can do a clean install with an upgrade DVD for Vista.
