Any future for the MMOFPS?

Heya everyone,

Now Im sure a majority of us know about WWII Online, I was curious, are there any such games on the horizon that are like this? With the traditional FPS style of game play? But stick themselves flat in the MMO genre?

Thanks in advance,

Flodgy

Huxley and Tabula Rasa seem to be the top contenders for this genre

I dont actualy think Tabula Rasa is a FPS anymore, I think its just a generic MMO with a sci-fi skin. I would like to hear Im wrong though, so if anyone knows for sure please correct me.

Huxley on the other hand is definitely a MMOFPS.  You also have Darkfall if nots vapourware which features gameplay similar to Mount and Blade, Oblivion and/or Savage (FPS based combat  in a fnastasy setting with fantasy weapons).

I think there is definitley a future in the genre, it just needs a game or two to do it  well.

AoC might bring something you like, in the sense that AFAIK you aim when you're using bow and arrows, and when you are casting certain spells.

Looking at the FPS genre in itself, I think a MMOFPS would have to have a few key features to make it, such as a stat tracking system and perhaps a way to arrange a competitive match between groups. The problem with a lot of MMOFPS games is, you hop in, and you're ground amongst people that sometimes you dont necessarily want to trust your backside to. The reason a lot of FPS players go at it in a 32-64 player server is, other than it being free, is that they have a sense of competition. In games like Planetside, there really isnt that sense. It's more a sense of "Here I go again with a bunch of people who cant find their backside in a mirror factory to assault that heavily defended base with a plastic spoon." It lacks the heart-pounding sensation you get in a competitive match where winning or losing depends on your reaction time and your use of tactics. Strategic warfare is all and good, but good warfare includes strategic planning with small scale tactical missions.

Practically half the games in development right now are going for some kind of hybrid system. Tabula Rasa, Chronicles of Spellborn, Darkfall, Age of Conan, Huxley for pure FPS off the top of my head, Ragnorak2 is supposed to have some kind of twitchiness involved in PVP I hear. Stargate Worlds, I think, is going to be doing something like Brothers in Arms with the squad based thing (unless there is some kind of "Cover Fire" skill on the hotbar...)

In terms of a pure MMOFPS I think Huxley is the only one coming down the pipe and it is apparently going to be instanced for the actual combat part (opposed to WWII Online's resetting or PlanetSide's persistence).

I had high hopes for huxley but after seeing the ingame vids it looked too much liek unreal sytle game play. This just doesn't intrest me. I would expect we have aleast 5-10 years until sometinhg great comes from mmofps.

I think Tabula Rasa is a shooter, but with a 3rd persom view.
