this should have been placed in fantasy world

This game looks great , sound great ,, and i cant wait to see it ,,, for i cant think of anything like it,,,,

but sadly its not placed in fantasy world , and because of that they have limited themself ,,, you will not see any sea monsters or dead  skeleton pirats  nither, ghost ships  etc ,, ehhh that would have been fun

no this is not like eve .. for you dont have avatar in eve i mean not the one you can see walking around your spaceship and taking a stroll on the planets ..or to transport/ beam up into other ship to fight avatar vs avatar ,, if there was something like that  i would be playing it now ..

Have the devs mentioned there would be no sea monsters/ghost ships etc?  They could implement these if they want to.  Just because its not fantasy doesn't mean there can't be things that don't necessarily coincide with reality.

I swear I replied to this thread already. Someone a bit heavy handed with the kill post button, given that all I said was released in the articles on this site. ;)

There was a bit of a ghost ship lore for the Halloween beta event. You can find that info on the article here. However for the most part it is a non-fantasy world.

I'm glad it isn't fantasy.  This way the little kids who just have to have their hocus-pocus go play POTCO and leave us to a smaller, more mature gaming world.  I'm not averse to having some of the superstitions of the time come to life, but if it becomes a bid to please the D&D crowd like so many other games, I'm out.

Am I the only one who thinks that the 'traditional' mmorpg fantasy (dragons, dwarfs, medieval armor, magic, etc.) is a bit overplayed and the market just a bit saturated?  I think it's easier for developers and publishing houses to market fantasy games because there is a large, established industry, clientelle and many pre-existing storylines and 'lore' to build off; some with notable market success (e.g., Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer).

Personally I feel that the popularity of this 'traditional' fantasy genre breeds successive generations of increasingly similar mmorpg's; drives innovation from the market and is generally bad for the mmo/mmorpg industry and consumers.

Games like Eve Online and Pirates of the Burning Sea, Voyage Century (PotBS's little brother), Silk Road and the like offer welcome departures from the RPG norm.

The awesome thing about a historically inspired mmorpg is that you have a limitless supply of backstory. You dont even have to write the storyline since it already happend. Due to the fact the motivation of the events were real, they seem to have a notable impact on the player. That is if there done well somewhat like in Call of Duty 2 did for Fps.

As for there not being Goblins and Orcs.. there are scarier things Cannibilistic Humans, Inqusitors, Maniac Conquistidors... the list goes on. Mind you a sailing based fantasy mmorpg wouldnt be half bad. Though frankly Id rather have airships! That would be one hell of a game!

It's already been done, as that is what pirate king online is, doesn't work well, that's for sure.

Actually, its nice to see a game thats based on historical fact rather than based in historical fantasy. For a change.

I dont think it is potbs's little brother. It came out first, it has a higher hype score and its free so in any case its the bigger broter of the two.

Actually it hasn't been released yet, it has a lower hype score, and I don't know about you but I've noticed a direct relationship between free games and lack of quality. Also potbs started development before vc so technically basing it on age potbs would be older.

I'm very glad to see a game that is "true to life" and not all wizards and fairies. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of fun to be had in the fantasy world, but it's a genre that's just been beat to death in my personal opinion.

Doesn't the game take place in the Bermuda Triangle?  IMO thats a perfect place to have ghost ships and sea monsters.

Even if it's not based in fantasy, it may be based in alternate reality.  No elves or gnomes, but still the possibility exists for giant sea monsters, encounters with legends, and intense natural phenomena like whirlpools, hurricanes, and water spouts.  I think there's a lot to keep this game interesting without resorting to the same old stuff.

Honestly i hope this game does succeed because of the fact that EvE online is boring to me. I've been looking forward to this game for years (seriously, i am a die-hard fan). If they add more fantasy properties (ghost ships, sea monsters, etc.) than needed i will be pissed.

The historial setting is one of my favorite things about thius game. Fantasy MMO's are done to death. WoW and Warhammer will end up dominating IMO and I hope developers look into different genres.

PS: Somebody, anybody...except SOE, make a fallout MMO. Please!

Well to some of you, youve got your wish, FLS has said in the last few interviews that they are going to include some 'mysterious superstitions' or what not in PotBS...  One of them mentioned mermaids.  They have made it pretty clear that only players who actively search out these superstitions have any chance of catching one...    I think that means you have to GET REALLY DRUNK before you can see a mermaid.

If this game turns into a Pirates of the Caribbean ripoff just because some people can't handle realistic games, I'll cry myself to sleep.

You don't need elves, skeletons, krakens and sirens to make a good game; it's all been done before, many times, and it's all beaten to death. I think a truly historic storyline will give this game not only a more mature playerbase, but a more immersive gameplay experience.

They keep assuring that only people who really seek out the few supernatural quests will find them, ect, but to be honest I'm a little dissappointed too.

trust me it's not a PotC ripoff.  it was being planned and made long before the first PotC movie came out.
