I was really looking forward to trying out the beta of LOTRO, but after three days of playing, for the first time in a while - I was genuinely, totally bored. Now maybe I have played too many MMOs and I am a bit jaded or overly critical. But wow, LOTRO seems like a big yawn-fest.

The character models are so-so. The animations are abysmal and lifeless. The classes are generic and boring. The game lacks ... excitement. Even the icons are boring. You would think, that when so many MMOs are coming out, that devs would take the time to make something unique and beautiful, but this really is the same ole stuff we have seen for years - and not the best elements of what has come before. Sad really.

So what's next to look forward to ...   Conan?

I didn't think it was too bad, I enjoyed it more than WoW and I find it more fun than Vanguard.  I hope all the animations arent all implemented yet.  Lack of PVP is a bummer but Monster Play looks promising.

Overall, I think the genre is just stale and a good company can really clean up with a great MMO.

Monster Play is PvP.  While playing your monster character if players playing their heroe character come to the Ettenmoors you can attack them and they can attack you. It's not the same PvP like other games at first glance, but in the end it is players fighting other players.

Enjoyed it more than WOW? except its a perfect replica of WOW, The skills are used in the same way, everything is horrifically the same. BASICALLY in essence, good marketing strategy for turbine, it sure worked for WOW, for people like me, i just want to do something different, like oblivion but online, anyone up for that? the game Kaos War is headed in that direction. I'm tired of mmos with boring "strategic" fights, let me add a little of my own skill in there, thats what im looking for. Just my 2 or more cents.  I had high hopes, i read the books 20 times a piece before the movies came out, some parts of the movies were disappointing but overall, wonderfully delightful and refreshing. This game has a world of warcraft sticker on it.

here let me help you, first a LoTRO screenshot

    now a WoW screenshot

about the only similarities is that both games have a ton of content, play well on low and mid range computers according to the minimum requirements page over at Turbine, and according to beta leaks LoTRO is already extremely polished and virtually bug free even with a couple of months left before release.

gameplay wise I guess everyone will get a chance to see for themselves at the open beta in a couple of months

    I miss DAoC

Hmmm...well I think, like alot of us, you are a "jaded MMO gamer" (new buzz-word)

I sorta feel the same way at times but there are only so many ways to skin a cat and in this case serve up a fantasy MMO. Frankly I think LotR is very good compared to most everything else out there right now. Character models are not so-so, there are so many other games with "inferior" models its not funny LotR models are very good. Animations..abysmal??? try Vanguard or SWG for some generic garbage animations. (speaking of abysmal animations... what does everyone think of that EQ2 "dance" animation for all the races, they one where you wiggle around like an idiot waving your hands around? Now there is quality entertainment! Thats an animation that is downright embarrassing to use) Any SOE made game just sucks when it comes to animations.

Classes, I sort of agree. They are mainly specialized fighters, but thats the Middle Earth concept, so fine. The lore of Tolkien specifically does not allow for traditional MMO mages and spell throwing priest. That was one of the conditions of the development if you read anything about the game and the "hows and whys". Thats all been talked about.  You are in the beta, you are honestly going to say that the start up quest aren't any good when compared to games like WoW or EQ2????

Icons look boring.....come on, you are just bitching now.....icons not exciting lol.... Thats like saying the loading screens are boring. WTF cares about the what the icons look like?

Anyway, if you don't want your beta account, I have a friend who really wants one. I would be more then happy to take it off your hands

Oh yeah, Conan looks awsome also...as does Gods and Heroes. Personally if these new games actually pull off what they say they are we are in for some good gaming this year.

This is the weakest comparsion you made with WoW and LotR. Jackdog, I played the last day of the stress test and I made a human character who looked EXACTLY like a character in WoW. They had exact same hair style (Short hair above the shoulders), the exact same skin color (Nubian, which shouldn't be possible according to LotR lore) and a depressing look.

I also made a male human nubian character, which is ironic since I can make a Bald Black guy in WoW. Both of them looked the same too. I can't give you the full details of what went on (Due to NDA), but I will say the game has literally taken everything from WoW and a little from DnD.

No  disrespect but I completely disagree. You are saying that LotR is exactly like WoW because you can make a bald black guy in both games??? You can make Dwarves also, so is it just like WoW because of that too? Can't make a night Elf (thank god) so I guess its not the same in that regard

Seriously, this minor bickering over whats ripped off from who is just pointless. One knothead is saying the game is boring because the icons are dull, others because there is a hot bar.......come on, get serious everyone. ALL of these things where around way before WoW (including bald black guys)

These screenies are from this website to prevent the NDA breaker junk

Look at these and tell me this looks just like WoW (aside from the OMG there is a Dwarf and he is short with an axe...just like WoW crap).....and I say you are on crack.

The game actually looks better now then in these shots as these are from much earlier beta.

Feel free to disagree all your like. That doesn't credit the information I noted nor does your attempt to throw my words out context does not discredited what I said either. (A very childish attempt might I add) You'd have be incredibly stupid or completely delusional to mistake what I said for something else. I'll say this one last time, cause I feeling you are here to just troll.

I can make the SAME EXACT nubian female character with the same exact hairstyle as the characters in WoW. It's not the fact, you can create a new nubian that's a problem, but the fact you can create an exact copy of the character from WoW, which is the problem because this only shows Turbine wasn't putting any effort to make this game unique or good. They are offering the same thing as WoW.

The only thing different about this game is the locations and designs behind the game.

Huh, those LOTRO screenshots make WOW's look worse than ever :)

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Yeah, cause heaven forbid two people stand the same way and please let's discount the fact that in the real world the vast majority of human beings are RIGHT -HANDED and thus would carry a shield in their  left hand and use their weapon in their right. No, there's no way that basic fact of human-kind would carry over into the art we create.

By the way, is there a game where the majority of avatars are left-handed? /sarcasm OMGZ that would be truly innovative. That's 5th gen!!!11!!  Or, get this, a game where the resting position is with your shield held above your head. Now that would truly change the genre!!11!! /sarcasm

Well to be fair, Turbine took WoW's graphics and polished them up, which is the only thing Turbine did right. :-(

I don't think anyone else with brain is going to give what you said a second thought and what part of "posture" did you not understand. BTW, those are elves. Really bad sarcasm on your party.

Um, I think every single game that is coming out  has a thread that states that that game is copying WoW. Does anyone really need to respond to them? It is only mildly funny. You can tell them that Wow copied other games til you are blue in the face, but the majority of the people saying this probably didn't play any games before Wow, so what's the point? Anyway, the screenshots look nice and I'm a huge Tolkien fan.

In my opinion the game graphically looks more like AC2 than WoW. Which I had no problem with graphically if the highres textures were installed. Even the bar at the bottom looks so much like AC2's hotbar.

Everyone says every new game is a copy of WoW. Why? Because WoW has millions of grind-loving, el crappo cartoony graphics for 5 year old loving, bunch of biased arse holes.

I've played WoW, and I had no qualms with it. Just wasn't the game for me.

If you say those WoW screenshots are better or on par with LotRo's, and that characters look the same you seriously are on crack. OF COURSE you can make a bald black guy on both games because THERE IS SOMEONE OUT THERE WHO WANTS ONE! The programmers in both games try to provide a person to make a character look HOW THEY WANT IT TO! So if you can make the same character in both games I'd say thats a pretty good step to supporting the wants of a customer.

EDIT: After rereading this post I found it to be a bit unclear that I'm supporting LotRo.

Well sad to read that actually.

Even after all that "LOTRO only won't die by its first year because of its name" stuff I was really hoping to see a decent game coming from that. But I gotta say that they had a chance to be very successful (lore, name and pre-created designs) =/
