Heh, Pink Gameboys are # 1 seller,,, (For games) Thats awsome, lol

I wouldn't go off that sites "sales" even if it said VG was #1... Just because I don't believe most things I see on the internet concerning sales.

If Vanguard has 15 servers (which I don't know since I cancelled my preorder after trying the trial for a couple weeks) then VG probably has anywhere from 225,000-300,000 subscribers (given 15k to 20k subscribers per server).  80,000 would be ridiculously silly because that would mean a 5333 subscribers per server.  Since I don't see loads of "Where is everyone?!" or "Nobody plays VG!" topics I'd assume they're closer to the higher numbers than those 80k-120k numbers.  Though this could be because everyone is still in the lower level areas of the game.  *shrug*

I'd guess that when all is said and done in three months VG's subscription numbers will stabilize around the 150k mark.  But that's just a guess.  :)

remember the buddy keys, and even with those not all servers are at capacity

the 80K was suspicious because he was manipulating the database on each server and counting the number of characters in each level for each server then allowing for alts. I have about 5 characters myself on there that will never be played because the beta client worked for a few days after release. So I would not swear by those  numbers either. Then you have to allow for how many will subscribe after the free thirty. Those numbers are traditionally at or below 50% for MMORPGs. About all you can do is wait 6 months and see if they start adding or consolidating servers.

Station All-Access Pass is a flat subscription fee of $24.95 per month granting the subscriber access to EQ, EQII, SWG, MXO, Planetside... and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

Technically, regardless of whether the subscriber actually plays Vanguard, they could still be counted as being "subscribed" to the game, even if they never chose to purchase the retail box and add it to their overall account. They still have access to it included in their monthly sub, and thus, are "subscribed".

So Sony could technically claim that Vanguard has X number of "subscribers" regardless of whether those subscribers actually play the game or not. Of course, they would know the real numbers by polling how many All-Access accounts have Vanguard added to them.

They just wouldn't be counted in retail sales numbers.

You cannot play a game that you don't own a retail box for.  I own EQL, EQ2 and SWG but I cannot play MxO because I don't own MxO.  Now if you had All-Access and owned a copy of each box then yes they can count that but if you don't even own a box then you cannot play it.

Capacity would be 20k not 15k and they don't open new servers for buddy keys so including them in any estimate would be foolish.  While I personally do believe it's closer to that 225k figure than the 300k I'd be very much surprised if it was significantly below that given the number of servers they have up.  Now as I've said I don't know how many servers they have up currently (or how many they had at launch, which would help) apart from what word I get here.

It's idiotic to open servers when you don't have the people to fill them.  Much better to open them up when you need them than to start with a bunch of excess servers.  I'm sure they based their original # of servers upon preorders or some such but even still the servers shouldn't be below 15k unless they did something dumb.  If they're approaching 5-8k people on the server you should see people complaining all over the place about server pop.  This is especially relevant with VG because of the way it splits everyone up all over the place based on race.

    Stoney,

The point is that All Access Pass owners are Subscribed to all games in SoE Access Pass library.  Yes, you have to buy a box (or download key) to actually play, *but you are still subscribed*, even if you don't have a box or play.  Get it?

This is all about phoney SoE subscriber numbers.  Not about who gets what cut of the coins.

Sorry as stoneysilenc said just previous to this post you can't play a game unless you own the box.  Your assumptions are also wrong in that SOE only considers you among subscription numbers for a certain game if you actually PLAY that game in that month.  I'm not sure if they have an amount of time you need to play or not but it is required that you actually log into the game.  If it was as you stated then Planetside would have a couple hundred thousand subscribers rather than the 30k or so that probably still play it occasionally.

it's immensly funny how many beleived it was a trial when it was BETA

    Knowledge is Power!

  • JaerinCosmosJaerinCosmos Member Posts: 34
Sorry to pop your vanboi bubble but open beta is nothing more than stress testing the servers and...wait for it...a TRIAL.  Nowadays open beta IS a trial for the majority of the MMO community and if open beta isn't what players thought it would be subscription numbers and sales will suffer.  Why?  Because MMO players have learned that in the week prior to launch the open beta is a fairly good indicator of what launch will be like.

Will there be a few adjustments made in that final week?  Of course!  That doesn't change the fact that it's a good indicator of what you'll be playing after release.

Now did I hop on for a few days and just sort of ignore the Quest Review window?  No, given that it was beta and I did (and still do) want VG to live up to all of its potential (which IS more than any MMO for some time IMO) I gave many hours a week for a what was a little more than a month submitting as much quest, gameplay, environment, etc critique as I possibly could.  I'm not some 12 year old with a 5 minute attention span that needs to pop a ritalin just to log into an MMO.  It's obvious to nearly everyone that played Open Beta as well as the game currently that the game was released to soon as well as being put into Open Beta too early.

MMO players will no longer waste months of time to wait for a game to get the polish it needs.  They need to see hints of that polish in the open beta to entice them into buying (and playing) the game.

Everywhere I go in VG, I see people.  Sometimes it's one or two; other times its dozens.  In cities, people are spread out all over.  This game world is quite full of people.  My server is Hilsbury and my race is Vulane (wolf humanoid).

Also, when I went to preorder Vanguard at EB Games over a week ago, they only had one copy left.  And every place I looked was sold out of collector's additions.  I had to buy a regular game which sux since I wanted the collector's addition.

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

You are still misunderstanding my statement.

"TECHNICALLY" SOE could claim any number of players for any single one of their Station Pass games and aside from attempting to cull actual player numbers over an extended period on every single server for every single game and gathering total box sales for every single game on the Station Pass over the period of the lifetime of every game, those numbers could be disputed but not necessarily proven false beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Further, I am not making an assumption about how SOE counts subscriptions per individual MMOs in the Station Access. I am stating flatly that SOE can report those figures as they choose, as they are not accountable to anyone for the individual player figures on each MMO on the Station Access. They are only accountable for how many actual Station Access subscriptions they maintain.

If you have an official statement from SOE that says "For subscription numbers for each of the MMOs on the Station Access, we only count those who both own a retail box AND play the game each month" I would be very interested in seeing it.

The last official subscription numbers for EQ were reported in 2004 at 450,000, before the Station Access Pass was created and EQ was added to it.

If you do not have such a statement, then your statement on how SOE counts subscription numbers for each MMO is the assumption, particularly as SOE does NOT report subscription or player numbers for each of their MMOs.

I can specifically point you to statements where SOE has refused to post actual player numbers on EQ, EQII, SWG and MXO, although they have released total sales numbers. For example, SWG had sold a total of one million retail units as of August 2005. From this, are we to believe that SWG has one million subscribers? Obviously not, nor does SOE make any attempt to claim that it does, or to verify their actual player numbers in any way.

So regardless of how many MMOs an individual may have added to their account, SOE's only real concern is how many total Station Access subscriptions they are supporting.

As they do not report figures on how many actual players there are per MMO on the Station Access, and as we would have no definitive method for verifying their numbers if they did, they can claim any number of players per MMO based on their existing single subscription numbers and Station Access numbers. While we may dispute those numbers, we could not definitively disprove them.

Which is why we have sites like Sir Bruce's MMOG Chart which makes educated guesses but cannot state categorically that the numbers presented are definitive.

"Technically" Any MMO company could do exactly as you say not just SOE in relation to their Station Pass.  Lets not just pass the buck to SOE alone here.

    so shouldnt matter the filter.
For PC games, 22nd best selling of all time.

Amazon doesn't have a All-Time list, all their lists are updated hourly so as sales increase it goes up the list and as sales decrease it goes down the list.  If it was a All-Time List then WoW would be a solid #1 and would never budge.

On Amazon the CE was at #5 earlier in the week , now the CE is at 12 and regular at 11 as of an hour ago. Sales have peaked and are dropping off.

Yeah, because amazon hasn't been delivering the product, and people have caught wind of it.  No one knows the number of accounts because nearly every amazon order has been delayed until mid-late Feb.

I predict the game with have 50k people tops.  That is after a major expansion.  My guess is there is currently around 15k playing the game right now.  It will probably have a foundation of about 10-15k peeps during its lifetime.  I don't think that is too bad.

    lol?

a game like this probably need 150k+ players to make a profit, 15k? lol,swg has more i bet., rofl.

800,000 is a funny number.  Funny because if it was true, Sigil and SOE would be making such a stink about it you would be able to smell it in Azeroth.
  • gimpusmonsgimpusmons Member Posts: 60

Let's do a little number crunching with some reasonable speculation.

There are currently 13 servers running with total numbers of characters on one server (rounded up to the nearest thousand) ranging between 6,000 and 19,000. A total count rounded up brings us to about 178,000 CHARACTERS total.

Now, we need to speculate that on average, players have at least one alt created (I have two alts). This total also includes the Sigil staff's characters and alts since we can see level 50s scattered about. This means that its far more likely that the actual number of VANGUARD players and paid subscribers falls somewhere between 60,000 and 89,000 at the present.

I predict the player base will slowly rise some, but I have doubts about the game's ability to attract and maintain significantly larger numbers of people outside of its present fan base. If Sigil and SOE can manage it, bully for them. With the game world as large as it is, some of the servers definitely need more active players or else consolidations are going to have to take place to make grouping and community building viable.
