What to like about Vanguard?

Well you can say I am very upset with Vanguard, the character models are so stiff. Also the quest are lack luster and AI well what AI. Game feels Alpha not even beta. Ok the graphics of the enviroment are nice but when I jump from a hill to the floor my character model should not brake the plane and sink me into the floor texture and then pop me back up.

Also whats the deal with the swimming horrid you seem to bobble out of the water.  Server lag is one thing but the game is very glitchy from mobs and npc disappearing to warping from one area to another.  I dont understand what you guys are saying that the game is so awesome have you ever played a MMORPG or is this your first.

I have played EQ,EQ2,WOW,SHADOWBANE,COH,EVE,RYZOM,D&D Online,Final Fantasy Online.....  The game feels rushed, they copied a lot of the elements of the interface and questing from WOW and added several elements from EQ2... The game needs a lot of work from the engine and up. I still can not believe you guys can give this game a 8.3.. It has the features and many options to do what you want but the gameplay is horrid.

I say for those looking to play Vanguard stay away... continue to play what you have been playing becasue Vanguard is not all there...

Lucky I have friends that work at GameStop so I could return the game and get Lost Planet for my Xbox360....

Still playing EvE Online and World of Warcraft BC ...

Why didn't you add that there is no character uniqueness in VG? Everybody are clones, no skill trees no attribute pools no nothing. Only gear makes you different ...

Not everyone is clones.  I haven't seen a single character that looks like mine, but there does need to be more variety I agree.

    There are attribute points.

The only good thing about Vanguard is that it's not WOW. That makes people playing Vanguard feel elite and flashy.

As they have said repeatedly during the beta, customisation is coming within the next few weeks.

    Point by point:

The game was a bit rushed, and lacks polish, but fundamentally it's core features are sound and give this game far more potential than any other MMORPG on the market. While some MMORPGs are fundamentally turds that no amount of polish can never change, Vanguard is fundamentally a jewel of a game that just needs more refined cutting and some polish.

There are some placeholder animations, but the complete ones are great. Try playing a monk to see an example of what you can expect as things become more polished.

There are attributes that you customize as you level.

Individual skills are raised by action, not allocation. As you favor certain attacks, weapons, or spells over others, your skill in those will increase while others will lag behind if you don't make use of them.

Most of the people who like this game are not new to MMORPGs, but veterans of the old school who are glad to see things turning away from the casual evolution seen in WoW and EQ2.

Vanguard has the most detailed character customization outside of City of Heroes. Things like more hair styles and clothes options are coming, and are easy to plug into the system as it exists.

I haven't played Vanguard but couldn't resist about this customization and City of Heroes point from post above.

Lol saying that something is better because it can has feature added is like claiming you won in Lotto because you can buy  ticket.

Anyway IMHO is product is not good there is no point to prise it because it it can eventually become good. Make it good then we will talk.

WoW was good on start. So it can be done if one wants to.

    Cheers

    PS

For record I don't play WoW since a year or so. My point was it was and is good, polished and finished.

    Regards,
    adolf

In general I agree with the complaints of the original poster.  I am playing VG while waiting for LOTRO to launch, here are my reasons:

    1.  It is not WoW.  With 5 level 60s in WoW, I cannot bear another second of it.  Fun game, but 2 years of any MMORPG is more than enough.

    2.  The graphics are pretty on my fairly decent rig.

    3.  New things to do.

    4.  You get a horse at level 10 (which is mitigated somewhat by annoying travel times even with the horse).

    5.  The quests and lore are kinda fun.

    6.  The community has settled in and is acting more mature now.

    7.  It can be soloed and / or played for just a few minutes.

    8.  Crafting seems interesting, but not very profitable (at least not yet).

    9.  Joining a mature game (EQ2) makes me feel lonely and a bit like a dummy (since everyone is playing somewhere else and knows everything).

    10.  The spells and abilities are pretty interesting.

I will be playing LOTRO when open beta starts around 3/31.  It will be interesting to see if VG can keep me around or whether I switch.  Frankly, I think the reason they launched VG early is that LORTO is going to be a 500 lb. gorilla.

I've played a LOT of games, and been in the vanguard beta phase,

Me too didn't liked the character animations and the plainity of the world,

Sigil was in a rush to publish and you can see that in a lot of things...  nevertheless they are in a good way, the new card game for negotiating, the things you can craft and the combinations of races, chars, mounts I am sure it will create a really intresting world when it is ready.

The only main thing that I beleave is missing is something to make players compete more (together or among each other)... and not only advance their character. The Favor you have towards some "vague" houses dont thing makes you eager to earn more...

Well, the game was definately rushed to market, still alot of gliches and bugs, and finishing touches needed. Though this will actually be a good game in about 6 months, once thing are all worked out. That is, unless LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, Gods and Heroes, and AoC have smoother launches and people lose patience with Sigil getting it's act together.

Maybe that was part of the push it out the door marketing, the thought that players roped in with an unfinished product would stick around if the competition stumbled. Of course, if they don't stumble, this could be like life boat drill on the Titanic.

It was actually SOE that made them push it out the door.  I think the games that will be coming out later have far more appeal.  This one is just unfinished.

I was in the beta for a few weeks, and after my 100th bug report I felt any more help and they'd have to start paying me. But there was a good, solid, core of a game there...

After that I spent a lot of time on the forums, before they closed them...

Then the first finally rolled around and I bought a $50 copy figuring they can give me 30 days to see what they pulled off since beta... Too bad SoE has a policy of not giving the 30 days to current SoE accounts. So I paid an additional $15 and logged in.

For reference my gaming rig is a laptop - 2.4 Ghz core 2 duo, 2 gigs of ram, 256M Nvidia Go7800 gt - which is on par or even slightly better than a lot of folk's game machines out there... I do a lot of LAN parties and the laptop handles everything I throw at it wonderfully - and it's far more portable than my desktop box.

Anyways, I logged in and spent the next hour working up a character... With all of the customization avaialble it's nice to be able to really put some work into how you want your avatar to look. Now, it's no CoH or CoV, but far better than the 24 options in WoW.

So I show up in Telon, ready for action only to have the whole world stop and start, quest givers take up to a minute to "rez in", MOBs fall through the ground or run through buildings, have sync errors with things I'm fighting, LOS issues, bugged quests, missing animations... I quickly found myself wondering if any of those 100 bug reports were actually read by anyone.

What struck me as funny was after I had spent an hour fiddlin' with my character to get him 'just right', as soon as I log into the game  get to see 30 verisions of 'me' with slightly differing heights... There's no differentiation in armor to set anyone apart, and the million little things you can alter for your 'look' are too small to notice in game.

Sure, the graphics are unbelievable (when you can see them) but what about the rest of the game? V:SoH is the current pinnacle of direction the games industry has been headed for a while now, where the game is developed by the art department and therefore looks awesome if you have $2000 worth of gear to play it on - but otherwise is about as fun as watching a slideshow of someones vacation photos.

So, I cancelled my V:SoH account with SoE (though I'm sure I will continue to get SonySpam for months) and will wait till (A) they fix it enough that people (not McQuaid fanbois) start saying good things about the game or (B) they do the inevitable SoE 'new deal' and completely change the way the game works... The second option *almost *saved EQ2 with Shadows of Faydwer - almost.

So, for now, Vanguard goes on the shelf along with UO, EQ (and the zillion+1 expansions), Asheron's Call 1 and 2, DAoC, Horizons, Shadowbane, CoH, CoV, EVE, EQ2 (and a separate box for Shadows of Faydwer), and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head...

The only MMO not on my shelf currently is WoW, and while it's about as difficult as fixing a PB&J and has that classic 'Warcraft III - but bigger' look, at least it is a finished, polished game worth paying a monthly fee for... And after your 6th or 7th level 60 and being halfway to 70 now, you realize that WoW isn't really an "MMORPG", it's really a very fancy IM client with phat loots.

Thats what i said, its very much like wow, but from enviorment aspects its eq2.

I cant se why that would make the game new?

Starwars Galaxies, An Empier Diveded, That's what it says on my box anyway.

I was in Vanguard beta since mid December, and I am extremely disappointed with what I saw. For a game in development 4+ years its horrible. I had so much hope for it, but it will be at least 6 months to a year before I consider buying it. The quest interface didnt fit in with the rest, diplomacy was buggy, crafting sucked, while the game has color, its a dull color not a vibrant like WoW.  Vsoh is claimed to be zone free which is a crock. You zone they just leave the same screen up of the area you are in while your hard drive loads the next area.  It needs at least 6 months of more beta testing. Thumbs down to this game.
