PVP in Vanguard.

I could very well be the last man on earth to try and look into this game so bear with me plz. PvP for me is the primary reason i would play any MMORPG, so ill make this quick and easy for those who have the knowledge to share:

Does this game have pvp?

If so, what is the reason to pvp? (land control?, fame?, nothing?)

Well, I played in the last beta, but have yet to get the game.  They had a PvP server in the beta, and it was free for all.  If you played EQ, you can compare it to Rallos Zek.  Basically, anybody can attack anybody.  I think I read somewhere about a 10 level restriction, however.

As far as the "reason" for PvPing?  There wasn't one, that I could discern.  It didn't seem to me that the game itself provided any sort of reinforcement or reward, if that's what you're asking.  I suppose it would be for fun, if that's your cup of tea.  Personally?  I don't like the FFA aspect of it.  If it were faction based, and set it up so that the different sections of races at Character Creation were pitted against one another, it would have been more entertaining.  That is PURELY my opinion though.

Edit:  Also, I haven't picked the game up yet, and played it since it released.  They might have more PvP servers with different rulesets now.  Maybe somebody else can comment on that?

The rules for the PvP Servers has been released; below is the official statement.

    Free for all server:

    Minimum level 7

20% soft level difference (explained below)

    15% coin loot

PvE item durability is disabled on ability activation and PvP death causes a chance for each equipped item to take a large hit

Releasing your spirit after a PvP death takes you to your bind point. You will not drop a corpse.

    Team server:

    Minimum level 7

    20% soft level difference

    15% coin loot

Durability is no different than a PvE server

Releasing your spirit drops a corpse (with no experience loss) and transports you to the nearest altar

Defensive targeting and grouping is restricted

    The teams

    Shadows of Kaerellun

    Dark Elf

    Kurashasa

    Varanthari

    Orc

    Goblin

    Vulmane

    Varanjar

    Lesser Giant

    Order of Alurad

    Wood Elf

    Raki

    Dwarf

    Halfling

    High Elf

    Half Elf

    Qaliathari

    Mordebi

    Gnome

    Kojani

    Thestran Human

We have support for additional teams, but we feel this is the best initial setup that supports the content and has people able to find opponents from a fairly low level.

The soft level difference means, while your ability to attack someone above the minimum level is unrestricted, if you are more than 20% of their level higher than them, they suffer no penalty and you gain no reward.

The percentages are easily adjustable and we will be enabling coin banking for PvP servers.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fame/Honor is on the to do list I think.

Just so you know, like with the EverQuests, this game is designed primary for PvE with PvP being an afterthought when so many people asked for it.  Balance will be a huge issue for a while - and unless there is incredible demand for PvP I can't really see them really giving 100% to proper PvP development.

Unlike games designed for PvP from the ground up (eg Dark Age of Camelot), there is no overall goal or reason for PvP beside the thrill of the kill.  Perhaps later on they could add a PvP/realm style continent - but as it stands now the world is designed PvE.

Its hardly surprising that games that have not been designed with pvp in mind from the outset tend to disappoint in that area. Refreshing to see up and coming games give it the attention it deserves. Roll on DarkFall,  AoC, WAR. Funnily enough it was a certain EQ producer that thought it easier to  just 'turn it off'  rather than deal with the issues. (and while UO was an absolute blast it did have issues with pvp). Of course as EQ was such a commercial success it was much emulated. Sadly the industry is only just recovering.

Actually I think the developer who can make pvp fun and meaningful without the negativity that often surrounds it may just have the next big hit on there hands. Personally I'd prefer that than a mini game of  'top trumps' when I talk to someone.

i play on a ffa server and so far i find it a lot of fun. I'm a level 9 monk and already have 5 people on my KOS list. I think things will get even more fun when guilds get stronger and cities get built.

btw, you get infamy for killing other players and of course lose it by getting killed in pvp. Everyone starts at 100 also.
