Remember when you were a dork if you played a MMO?

I'm sure a lot of you probably remember the days where if you told a friend you played a mmorpg, they would do 1 of 2 things. The first would be asking you what the hell is a mmorpg? The second is hard to get the exact words your friend would say but I'm sure it was something around like LOL, LMAO, ROFL, etc. Does anyone remember those days?

If you said no then I got to ask you something...how old are you? The reason I ask is because I’m 16 and that time was only 3 years ago. When I first got involved in a mmorpg, it was by a friend of mine who was home-schooled. He was a bit bizarre to be honest, but I was always nice and always giving everyone a chance before I judged. The game he got me involved in isn't important, but it’s the point of the matter that he did get me involved in a MMORPG. Now up until this point in my life, I was getting tired of video games as any game usually could be beaten within 1 week of getting it and this was incredibly boring. Once I played a MMO I was hooked, there was no end-game content, there was no "credits" or playing the game over as Mr. Tofu who was a 4 foot tall white metal beam killing zombies. What I found out when I told people at school about mmorpg's was both of the above examples I gave. Now jumping back 3 years time to present 2007...

I went to school and asked a few people if they knew what a mmorpg was? Seeing as I am on the football team, many who did know what I was talking about were completely shocked. To my surprise though, when I told a few of the "popular" kids what a mmorpg was they didn't laugh, they didn't make fun of me, they just told me they already knew what a mmo was and there little brother, friend, etc. played one of those "things".  Do you guys realize how much the MMORPG industry has changed in the last 5 years?

Now here’s where the Climax is reached and then you guys are left all alone with no more guidance from me like a 50 dollar prostitute in Vegas. Almost all people I talked to about mmorpg's always managed to mention the same thing. This common denominator if you will. All the popular kids referenced this animal as the one there friends, brothers, etc. played. It is the 800 pound guerilla I’m talking about. The one called World of Warcraft. Now personally I hate the game as it is too kiddy for me, not hardcore enough, no player cities, and pvp is a joke, etc. But I respect WoW for they changed the MMO Industry. They were the people who stood up on the podium and introduced the world to MMO's.....

I've been in mmo's since Ultima Online came out, which would be, well, looong ago.

People considered you a dork for playing them then, and they still do, all fairly justified tbh but I'm not particularly insulted by that seeing how 99% of humanity does stuff the rest of the bunch doesn't quite understand or approve of.

But yes, MMO's are getting more mainstream. Gamers in general are still not taken very serious however, as it still remains an activity enjoyed primarily by kids/

My first MMORPG was various MUDs back in the mid 90's.  My first graphical MMORPG was Everquest in 1999.

People still consider gamers to be dorky.  World of Warcraft however did change the industry to be more mainstream with it's appealing look and how easy it is to get started and know what you're doing.  Other than that -- World of Warcraft hasn't changed nothing.

Serious death penalties makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.

I have been playing mmo's since the launch of FFXI, so only a few years. But I can relate to what you are saying, I rember me and my friends in freshmen year were talking about how one of us just got this rare drop and how cool it was and one of the football players made fun of us...forgot what he said. When WoW was released and again me and my friends were talking about WoW the same exact kid said, "Ya I play that game, I'm a lvl 20 Tauren on the Nerzul server...His name is Heffard."  So I have to agree it has changed and I think it will continue to change hopefully in a positive way.

My first MMO was Everquest back in 2002. It's amazing how much MMO's have changed the industry over the years. Seems like everyone and their grandmother is out to make a decent MMO.

None of my friends ever said those words back then. Maybe because they weren't 13 three years ago.

This question puts me in an age category that I'm uncomfortable with!

Ii've been playing MMOs since 1998. Started with UO, unless you count MUDs, then even longer. Been playing video games since early to mid 80s with the NES.

And yeah, video games are becoming more mainstream and accepted but you're still a dork if you play MMOs. Its justa  throwback to the D&D days.

Yep, WOW even gets mentioned on television shows, like SG1. I've never seen any other MMO get that sort of recognition. If you try to explain to the average WOW player why WOW sucks, you might as well be speaking martian. And then they'll think you're a dork.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Lol, same here. I did MUD's in the early 90's, meridian 59 mid 90's making EQ my second graphical MMO but don't remember the year I played it.

I don't want to seem REALLY old but I was about 30 when I played muds. I was on the internet long before NCSA Mosaic was invented. USR 9600 HST FTW!!! lol

Whatever you do, somebody probably thinks you nerdy or wasting time... or something :P

Apperantly, even in the gamer community, MMOs are acceptable, but MUDs are just dorky...

Started MUDing back in 1999... didn't upgrade to graphics until 2002...

Hmm. I was playing D&D and MUDs with my friends when I told them about this sweet "MMORPG" Everquest that was coming out. "It's like Neverwinter Nights but 3d" I would tell them. They probably said "Awesome" or something to that effect.

    -edit- Missed a "
