I think VG and EQ II are more cartoonish than wow because in wow I can see everything. If I look at the horizon i can see the sun setting behind it. It doesn't look flat. It looks more three dimensional and layered and realistic than eq II. When I play eq II i feel like i'm walking in a box that has limits. Vangaurd removes that box feeling but I still feel like i'm on a flat sheet of paper with models of trees and people. I don't feel that way about wow. Wow is organic. It's like an organism that lives and breathes. The only problem our the rules. If you took wow and improved it's pvp, got rid of some of it's world restrictions, like where you can go and what you can do, it would be the best mmorpg ever. There would never be a reason to make another one. They basdically are two miles away from perfection but three miles closer than anyone else.
Vangaurd, i am playing now, is alright. I will wait for it to get better. Currently i play both. Vangaurd for my fantasy fix, and wow for my mmorpg fix. I don't consider wow to be a fantasy setting, it's more of it's own beast.
Either way...
WOW's graphcis are superior because they look better.
Alot of those new direct x effects are useless because they make me feel like i'm playing a simulation, not a game.
and yes i have clipping turned almost all the way up in vg and eq and i still can't see passed 16X16 squares...wtf is up with that? I mean i can see a line of a horizon and land but it's like the land with no details.
Blizzard knows, how to make well optimized game engines, I guess EQ 2 and Vanguard developers lack in those departments.
Good grief let's not get carried away here.
The reason WOW runs so well is because it doesn't require much from the video card or the CPU.
WOW is a fun starter MMO but it's low tech plain and simple. Now if you appreciate it's art style cool you certainly have that right. Let's be real here though, WOW is nothing to be brag on in 2007 from a graphical or technical standpoint..
You know there are those who prefer Mustangs to Lamborghinis and that is their opinion.
However the FACT is Lamborghini is a far superior automobile..see my point?
EQII, and Vanguard are far superior MMO's both graphically and technically regardless of personal opinions.
But by all means let's continue to applaud those who set the technoligy bar low.
Good grief we'd all still be flying in Bi-planes. In case you missed these points, a thing like Art also has to do with graphics. A think like world terrain, detail, all has to do with graphics. Everquest 2 only has a powerfull engine, but it seriously lacks in things like detail and art compared to WoW. Saying that its fact is ignorant. If it really was fact, then reviewers would have put Everquest 2 above WoW in the graphical department, yet we see the opposide happen.
If you think for one momment WOW has more Graphical detail in world terrain, armor, or character models than EQII, Vanguard, Guildwars or Lineage II that's you're opinion.
However those four games are Graphically & Technically superior to WOW in every way and that is FACT.
I have no vested interest in any of them, I just state the obvious.

Right off the back yes i play WoW, iam no mean a fan i play it because i find it fun, hell i even play UO time to time because its fun. Now that i said that WoW TBC graphics are beautiful played at max settings the mix of cartoony + realism is just great. Now heres what i dont understand, EQ2 and Vanguard SOH im sure with graphics maxed up are very beautiful as well but whats with the extreme need for a good computer?
Iam running WoW TBC with a ati radeon 9550, pent 4 3.0 processor, 1 gig of ram and i run WoW with everything on max and it runs sooo smooth i never lag and many places in WoW is overpopulated wether its bloodelves or draenei i still get no lag.
Though with EQ2 and im sure vanguard is even worse i just run on med settings which looks pretty bad but the lag and the choppyness is intense. Does SOE/sigil not have a good engine?
I'm just going to call you on this. You're completely lieing about how you get zero "lag" in world of warcraft. You have a graphics card that came out in 2003. Before I upgraded my computer, I had the same setup except with an X800XT and I still got lag when I was ORG bank area. So don't come on here saying how you run WoW max settings, 2312x FSAA 1543x FSAF at 14000x15000x resulution because you don't. And to rebutle your other absurd statements, WoW TBC looks exactly the same that the Azeroth looked. Probably worse, considering each zone has 1 texture throughout. Its like comparing saying Mario 64 has amazing graphics compared to Dead or Alive 3 for Xbox. Its rediculous and untrue. LOL "the lag and choppyness is intense." Thats because again, you're running a computer that was built in 2003. Your computer probably can't even produce the textures that are in Vanguard. You can't run most games nowadays with anything but low settings on that graphics card. So go buy a new computer that actually runs the ATITool Cube and come back explaining to us how Vanguard's engine sucks.
BTW. You're right, its not optimized. but it still looks 100x better than World of Warcraft. Which is the game that is alt+tabbed for me at the moment.

soo true cause what a game needs to be enjoyable is the latest graphics.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Well ill try not to come across as a wowfanboy or a vghater but gota air my views.
WoW's engine is much older then two. It's the unreal enginge and if you wanna know what can be done with the unreal engine then take a look at EQ2 with all setting cranked. WoW isn't the best in coding simplisity either, nor was the engine as smooth at release as it was today.
WoW uses the unreal engine? no no sir, VG uses the unreal engine, a modded Unreal 2 ( 2003 ) engine BTW so not even the latest verison 3, i thought VG was next gen? And i dont think ppl were getting 5-10 fps on medium settings using med-high spec cards at the launch of WoW.
People continue to look at VG and its performance at this stage and want to compare it to a engine that has had 2 years of optimization.
WoW has had very little if any optomizations in all the time ive played, going on 16months. atleast no new gfx sliders etc. VG is a resource hog, Sigil have done all they can to improve it, its down the players spending 200-400 bucks on their systems now.
Even on balanced setting I think VG looks far better then WoW running at max. The use of ambiance and detail to the
surroundings make the world come to life.
For this little experiment I chose a Wow and VG scene i found on da web that are similar.
WoW has acomplished what they wanted from the engine they chose to use, but I could never shake that they style and direction that they chose was never original from the beginning. Unreal engine and Warhammer art, not even the engine and style is original to Blizzard, guess that's why every other aspect of the game is just a knock off of someone elses ideas, but then most MMO's are.
Again WoW uses blizzz own gfx engine, and orks and elves looks the same no matter what game they are in.
A simple, low polygonal, unoriginal, unimaginetive world in my opion doesn't make up for better performance.
unoriginal, unimaginetive well thats your personal opionon i guess no matter how wrong it is
WoW graphics are too much for me. Feels like I'm gonna get holes in my teeth because it's so sweet.
I love realism, that's why I like graphics from other games better. Not that they are more fluid but yet it beats disney to me.

WoW kinda locked themselves into their art style when they released Warcraft 1. They have always gone with a more artistic, cartoonish flair with all of their games. Changing it to Super Realistic Mode in WoW may have alienated a lot of the Warcraft player base who had gone accustomed to the cartoonish style after 3 Warcraft games, expansions, and StarCraft.
I like WoWs look, I like EQ 2s look. WoW serves to remind me its a high fantasy game. EQ 2 tries to impress on me that its a real world.
Vanguards graphics on very high (which mind you, is very much playable on my pc) is leaps ahead of WOW's low polygon art. There is NO way i can even compare the two.
BTW they have said numerous times they are still working on improving performance in Vanguard.
PS Vanguard is using a heavily modified version of the unreal 2.5 engine. They plan on adding unreal 3 features in the future.
EQ2 and Vanguard look so synthetic and lifeless. They both look like a sterile, computerized simulation of fantasy rather than portraying a living world with a beating heart.
I was never a fan of Blizzard taking the Super Mario Bros. approach to WoW's graphics but at least the world looks alive. It doesn't look like it was designed by a bunch of cold corporate suits trying to milk the masses of their money with a computer simulation.
I think a sci fi games like Doom3 and Quake4 are currently better suited for showing off the latest graphical effects rather than fantasy genre games.
WoW’s art style is as dated as it’s graphics engine, it looks like the 90’s came back and threw up all over my monitor. The only redeeming quality is that texture resolution is so low you can’t see it that clearly.
