I'm sorry to say this but I renewed my account. Don't say it. But I had to see what in God's name is going on in the game. I've heard so much change for the better I thought I would go check it out. I have some good news and bad news. First lets start with the good news.

GOOD NEWS

1. All my stuff was still there.

2. With a little adjustment to my UI and controls, I was almost back to pre-CU. Not bad.....

3. Graphic are still pretty nice.

4. I'm thinking..... Oh... it seemed a bit better balanced.

Ok, now the bad news....

BAD NEWS

1. All the major cities are dead, and I do mean dead. I roamed around for nearly an hour, and visited all the major cities and I saw maybe 50 people playing on the Ahazi server.

Question.... with all the servers they still have online which ones still have a real population on them? I don't think it would be worth the money to transfer my toon.

2. Still has some graphics problems. Random walls flickering and stuff.

3. Even with no one online, I was lagging like a mutha f**ker. I fired my carbine at a Bantha and it took nearly 10 secs for it to respond to the command.

4. Obviously SOE learned nothing from the NGE. Since the GCW started everyone was reset to the rank of private. WTF!! So they just want to continue to piss people off. I ground for months to get to the rank of colonel.

MY CONCLUSION

It seems to me that SOE is completely dillusional. Why don't they just pull the trigger already and kill this thing they call a game. They have taken away any sense of accomplishment from the hordes of people who use to play there "game". They took away the achievements of the Jedi, and no they have stole our rank. WHY PLAY?? They will just change it later and make all you've work for worth nothing. They have bounced back and forth changing this and that and the game has changed very little for the better. Not worth my time anymore.

I don't wanna hear any crap about how I have to give it time. I played pre-CU, after the CU, and several months in the NGE. So I've been there, done that. I just wanted to see if it had changed for the better since September of '06. Not much if anything. Not enough to keep me playing. So much has gone wrong that it's impossible to fix it now. It's done, let it die. And if some jackass says, "You have to be on during prime play times", or 'Come to my server, we're have a lot of fun and theres a lot of people on my server". You are an idiot. If i can't go online whenever I want, or I have to transfer my toon, then why the hell should I play? I guess I'll go back to playing Ryzom. At least it has a bit of SWG pre-CU feel to it and people are always online. Great community and great economy. Skill based and sandbox style of play. Also a lot of SWG vets play Ryzom. SOE and SWG lost me again and I just got started. Sad really. I'll just keep hoping and waiting for something good to happen in the MMORPG world. Although that may be a loooong wait. I don't think anyone has the balls to make a ground breaking game like SWG pre-CU. Don't say Vanguard, I want a Sci-Fi MMO.

Vanguard didn't break any ground anyhow, just basically turned over a bunch of soil that someone else all ready played with.  I'm with you on the need for a decent sci-fi game as well.  There are a few titles coming up, but the only thing I've found enjoyable in the sci-fi realm lately is EVE.  That game is fun for me, but I can see how it wouldn't appeal to everyone in the mmo market.  My wife and I both would start playing SWG again if it went back to Pre-CU or CU style gameplay.  The new game is just depressing.  Heck, I wouldn't even really care if there were too many players, as long as it was just the original game design play style.
  • infrared1infrared1 Member UncommonPosts: 440
EVE is pretty nice, I just can't handle being in space the whole time. I like more of a community. But it's cool, and i agree not for everyone. I play online with my wife also. We played pre-CU, CU, and NGE together. Durinng the first 2 we could split up. She was a doctor and I was a BH. She would stay in Bestine and heal, buff with friends or travel to Cnet for more of the same. While I scoured the galaxy for my marks. Since we could have multiple pros back then, we also enjoyed going out together for some action. But since the servers are dead in NGE we just hung out together ALL the time. Even when we did go out some little kid would always run up and duel us, talk shit with his uber jedi toon, then run off. Needless to say it is impossible to have a good time in SWG now.

-1 for giving SOE money, again. You don't need to re-subscribe to see if the game is dead, it's posted all over the forums in big letters. >.>

[[ DEAD ]] - Funny - I deleted my account on the site using the cancel account button.  Forum user is separate and still exists with no way of deleting it. Delete it admins. Do it, this ends now.

That one still makes me wanna cry out loud. Been a AS and a Doc pre-CU and guess what? Yeah...

One and a half year work down the drain. Not to speak about EQ2 where I seemed to have the luck to having had played since beta a Troub. Yet again another "CU" from $OE hit me.

I told my SWG mates EQ2 would be actually cool and should go play bla bla. THEY told me they never ever gonna play any $OE game anymore and will play WoW instead.

How ironic, nowdays I'm in the same boat of never ever gonna play any $OE game anymore ever.

Yes, but I also saw a lot of posts about cool changes. Is it ok that I want to see for myself? Yes I gave SOE money, my bad. It's one thing to hear about and another to experience it first hand. I'm not stupid. Just curious.

Don't feel bad man, I actually think that 50% of the subs there now are for the exact reason you did it.

Most people (even myself when they sent me like a free trial email each month) to fire up my old account....

Each time I do it, it is a dissapointment.    Getting stuck in aggro, or the clinking sound of getting on your vehicle, to seeing dead cites and a empty friends list...

SWG fans do have one thing in common is that we are gluttons for punishment, that's for sure.

As it was said a long time ago "What was once a world is now just a game"...

    I did the same thing.

Basically they improved it, yet still dumbing down the game.

They are still, with 9 profession, trying to balance.

They are contradicting themselves pretty badly with the past and present. Buffs, Soloing, DoTs.

    • Buffs were supposedly unbalanced Pre-CU. Yet now in the NGE, it's pretty much more buff dependent.

    • Soloing was bad as it didn't encourage grouping Pre-CU. Yet in the NGE the only way to level is to solo, or you get robbed of XP.
    • DoTs were unbalanced Pre-CU so they say. NGE...DoTs are everything. Every combat profession has atleast one DoT, and even the weapon's elemental damage can apply DoTs.

I started up with SWG again a few weeks ago after quitting in early 2004.  I hadn't kept up with the game at all during the time in between, so needless to say I was a little green and had a lot of catching up to do.  I don't mind it really, it has some issues but overall I'm having fun with it.  But yes, the cities are dead and the massive player population that once was has evaporated.  Which makes sense really, considering how many people have fled the game.  But yeah it's sad to walk into Mos Eisley and find maybe 20 people where there were once 100+.  But maybe that's a good thing in a way.  With all that particle effect gayness they've added to specials I think most peoples' computers would explode if 100 people were dueling at once.

My biggest complaint with the game (and I have a lot) is easily the fact that if I'm fighting in PvE and the enemy has an elbow behind a tree I get a "cannot see enemy" message and can't hit him.  If we're fighting on the side of a hill or mountain, same thing despite both of us being in full view at all times.  I don't know why inclines are so confusing to the game code.  All the while I'm getting messages about not being able to attack, guess what the enemy is doing?  Drilling me.  Happens dozens of times when I play.

On top of that enemies have an uncanny ability to not only run through walls and objects, but shoot me through them.  In other words there is no hiding or fleeing to avoid being shot.  Once an anemy has you targeted it's a matter of distance, not obstacles.  Get far enough away and they will lose interest but run into another room or down a twisting hallway and their bullets and lasers will penetrate and find you no matter what.  It's terrible.  Due to the frequency with which I encounter it I'd have to say it's my biggest problem currently.

Other than that I see they removed decay which is lame, player cities are choked with condemned structures which devs won't get rid of....the list of issues is pretty long.  And anyone playing already knows about them so I will save my breath.

I agree with your list of issues.  I noticed the same things when I fired up my old account again.  I debated playing the game again for a year, I finally coughed up the money and opened my account up again.  I right away noticed all of the changes that had been made.  Slowly I started configuring my controls and UI into a playable configuration.  I enjoy the fighting in the game, but as you had mentioned there is still clipping errors and no collision detection for the badguys.  Many times they will be inside an object in a room and you can't touch them.  I think they should stop toying with little profession tweeks and work on that issue, because even PreCU that was a problem I saw in the game.

The combat in my opinion has been definetly upgraded.  It is easier to fight stuff now, were as before I was a MBH with uber gear and was getting pawned by half the stuff in the game.  Its different now.  I can solo almost anywhere which is definetly what I prefer in an MMORPG.  There really isn't a need to be in a huge group for everything.  The poplation is incredibly small, but its closer and I think if they decide to reduce servers they will have no option but to start demolitioning condemed houses.  They create massive lag and take up huge portions of space in the game.

Aside those issues, I am a Star Wars fan and I enjoy being in the game again.  Was suprised to see a many old faces still in the game.

Nothing to say other than he is right about Ryzom, unfortunately their latest moves are requiring manual editing of configuration files in order to get updates or even connect for that matter. Most people who want to try the game will simply download the client, but unable to connect, and then give up. Note: the only listed this in the forums (from players, not administration), and not in their front page news. I did like ryzom and even paid for Feb of this year, only to find after reinstalling that the game was a pain (not really if you can open notepad) to run.

Ryzom is great, try if you can. SWG is still fluttering in the wind. I miss it, and hate it all at the same time.

Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.

Tried: WoW, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Everquest, WWII Online, Planetside

    Beta: Lotro, Tabula Rasa, WAR.

Lets face it. Gamers these days want an easy game they can grind fast. WoW is sad, anyone can solo easily. When you play a game like ever quest and run into an old woW player you want to shoot them. They ask why they cant solo a yellow or white mob... as a cleric. Then you have to explain that the game is more group oriented then they say, thats stupid, this game is shit.... Or you play a game like DAOC, then they complain that the RvR is dumb because you cant jump around like a moron wacking at each other.

WoW was the start of the end of MMOs as we know them, the hard... time consuming MMO's. Now people want easy games. I dont understand it.  For example DAOC was fairly slow leveling. But they gave 150% 200% xp bonuses in most areas. Ever Quest added MM's.... ect making it easy to level, of course then you cant do shit as a high level.

Face it, us gamers that want a real game with challenges and adventure are shoved to the side for the new generation of 14 year old gamers that think they are the best players in the game because they have The Holy 1337 Blade of Troll Slaying.

SoE is simply attempting to jump on the wagon like all the other MMOs now days but failed because Star Wars tends to attract an older more mature audience thus has little room for the immature 12-14 year olds (not all are immature at this age). Thus it was a failure.

This quote from glitchless (a company) about sums it up ~ The face of MMOs has changed since work began on Dawn and Project X. As the new titles have rolled out tailored for mass consumption they have been increasingly dumbed-down with both less risk and less reward. Glitchless makes no promise or prediction of when, but the 'what' will not change- a polished game with hardcore game mechanics. Any effort on our part to attract casual gamers via game desciption or advertisement is in hopes of showing them the light.

The main statement in that was about the dumbing down of games, I find it sad that it is true. I loved playing games such as Ever Quest when it was still hard to level, as well as Dark age of  Camelot, ect.

But I agree that SWG has no place in the gaming world, at least not as a p2p game, I could see it doing decent as a free online MMO such as Silk Road or Maple Story. But it is a true example of the new dumbed down gaming generation.

Against all judgement I resubscribed as well, just to see what is up. I played yesterday for 4 hours from about 1pm est to about 5pm est on corbantis server. As I traveled from planet to planet I did a player search on each planet and did them about every 15 to 20 minutes during this time. During that entire 4 hours play time on corbantis I only found 5 other players total!!

I send a tell to each one of them and only one responded. I asked about the population on the server. This player was very defensive about my question. Trashed me as being a noob. Saying SWG is all adults and they have real jobs and play at night. Then told me to go play WoW. I realize there are prime times to play all mmos. However 5 players in a 4 hour period on a sever in any mmo mid day is unbelievable. I wonder how SOE can even keep the game going. For about an hour I was the only player on Naboo.

The game is not the same a pre-nge we all know that. The game is not as bad as some say but how can you play an mmo alone. After the 4 hours I realized the game was indeed dead. I cancelled my subscription again. I will probably log on a few time until my subscription is expired. It was a real lonely time these four hours. Mostly I ran around to my favorite spots and remembered the dozens and dozens of players everywhere. Maybe there is some truth to "you can't go home".

I was on Corbantis later, about 10pm to 12:30 est. There were about a dozen to 18 people in Theed cantina over that period. 3 or 4 AFK dancers, 1 with holos, a couple more ATK and some customers who came and went. I was semi-AFK folding laundry, changing rountines and responding to a couple /tells about buffing. I saw a bit of talk about population numbers and the "flightless bird".

Population over on Test Center was ... decent by CU standards. I wandered thru several cities trying to find where they put the frogs so I could test their wretched Beast Master system, but never located them.

All I know about BM is what I've read, but it isn't real promising in several respects. The infuriating thing about it is that it looks unnecessary, and a kick in the nuts to old CHs. One thing I was doing on Corbantis was getting some final "quality time" with my pre-CU Bol mount. Only 2 of the commands he was trained in pre-CU didn't work, Attack and Guard, and that was only because the devs intentionally disabled them. The old system is still there and still functional; all they needed for BM was ways to again control the old CH pets and get new ones. Instead, they are turning mounts into no-level animal-shaped vehicles that you auto-mount and which auto-store when you get off, no longer functional as pets. A drastic reduction in the number of pets allowed in the datapad. Ex-CHs can't use their old pets; the only option is to "stuff" them as display deeds, and they can reduce that stuffed animal to a DNA sample for incubation in the new system.

Lol you are exactly right. Resubscribing to swg is like falling off the wagon. I have resubscribed to games I left with no emotion. Just log in play a bit and cancel. However with SWG it feels different. You go in hoping against all hope that you will see something you missed in NGE-SWG just to find that big empty feeling. You just want an answer to WHY?! Hense so many still keep talking about SWG. There is no other mmo ever (that I can remember) that has died and so many people years later still talk about it with such passion.

I realized something about pre-nge SWG. You have to have been heart broken to get this. SWG is like the break up and loss of someone you really loved. Probably when you were young or a first love. No matter how old you get or how long ago it happened there will always be a piece of it in you. You want to know why. You want a heart felt apology. Then you want to move on. None of these things will totally happen ever. That is life.

Just like in SWG. You will never understand why. No matter how much they (SOE) try to explain. You will also never accept their answers because they will not be what you want or need to hear. You will never get an apology. They (SOE) do not feel they did anything wrong. You will also never accept it deep in your heart even if you get one. After all the thing you loved was taken away. Now here is where we can succeed a bit. You just have to move on. You will have to realize that for the rest of you life the memories will comeback. Maybe when you hear that old song (Theme to SW) or see those old pictures (SW  movies) you will feel the pain again but with time it eases and you realize you have moved on and you are glad you did. Although once and a great while the feelings will return but this time you will not have to resubscribe. You will just remember the good time mixed with a touch of the loss. You will find yourself smiling not crying. After all it was a great time while it lasted. I finally removed SWG from my hard drive.

It doesn't help when you know (not just feel, but know) that parts of their explanations and justifications are pure BS. A "justification" that is a turgid mix of lies, spin, and probably some unpalatable truths will not help anyone to let go of the matter.

Your server must be different than mine.

SS has thousands of people online at nearly anytime, our cities are crowded and the game is thriving - it's like pre-cu all over again.

the only thin' that will ever brin' me back to SWG ever again is pre-CU servers.. and that means have to start from scratch anyway.. not that it will ever happen so there!
