You can already buy one, but I'd suggest holding off on buying one for at least a year for a couple reasons:
1. Right now they are about $1000, in a year or 2 they will be about $100.
2. Nobody knows who will win the format wars between HD-DvD or Blu-ray. If you drop $1000 for onw right now, and then HD-DvD wins the war youa re now stuck with a $1000 paper weight.
If you absolutely need one though, and you don't mind spending a lot of money there is a Blu-ray/HD-DvD player that will play both formats. It was just released by LG. Not sure on the price, or availability.
The actual blu-rays will cost about same as dvds when they are more popular.. At this moment blu-ray is on the win.. First hd-dvd was winning but now blu-ray has like doubled the userbase than hd-dvd so I think Blu-ray is going to win

Thats a big prediction for a population where 98% of the people are still using DvD, or VCR players...
well, the main reason for wanting to know this, is actually so i can convince my dad that buying a ps3 isnt as stupid as he thinks and thanks for the info.
Neither Blu-ray or HD-DVD is winning anything. They just dont offer as much of a visual and sound advantage over regular DVD to be worth it. 9 out of 10 people are not going to be able to tell the difference between a movie on HD-DVD/Blu-ray, and regular DVD.
Its just a bunch of technical babble, regular everyday person who just wants to watch movies dosent give a sack of shit that Blu-ray can hold 30gigs or the laser light is blue, or HD-DVD has a popular name.
DVD still has 3-5+ years of life in it as far as im concerned, there is no reason to upgrade.

I think you are wrong about most people not being able to notice the difference. I don't think it's enough of a different to justify the price.

You are more on the correct side their n25philly. I am in the CD/DVD industry and have actually walked through plants such as Technicolor when they are doing a HD-DVD release. If you put them side by side you can notice the difference in the details on a good to great TV. Things stand out more that are shadowed, things with a lot of white are more detail as well and not just a bright spot. Within the industry, the Hi Def media is still a question mark. If you look at studio releases, a 1-3 million DVD release is only going to be backed up by a 10-15000 piece HD release. Production houses currently laugh at the quantity requests and there are not many packaging machines to do this because the volumes are not worth it to buy a machine.
The numbers just aren't there yet to make a major impact on the market. Not enough people have the money at the moment to pay for the player (even a PS3) and a HD capable TV. Until these items saturate the homes of the US, standard DVD will continue to roll along with these HD formats struggling to keep up.
The sad part is, it is going to be a fight to the death between these two rivials (Blu-ray and HD) with other "knock-off" taking much much smaller bites out of both of them.

As a bluray player the PS3 is the best decesion right now.. Because its the cheapest on the market.... and Gives a picture that is comporable and in some cases better then the stand alone players at the moment.

As for all the other stuff though, I agree with Spath
well, hes not really "looking" for one, dont even think he knows what it is :S but why im asking is because if he starts talking about how its not smart to buy such a expensive console, i gotta have something to say to that.. (like: "you get the next-gen dvd player with it, which will cost YOU some money to buy, im doing you a favour man" he will soooo fall for that)
wait a minute, can ps3 run both blu-ray AND hd-dvd? and xbox360 only hd-dvd? (though that WAS kinda weird that thats what it said, i realised that thats porpably wrong, cause then the ps3 would be superiour, wouldnt it?) my source for asking this is the norweigen wikipedia, saying: (though in norweigen) can read: dvd's, hd-dvd, and music (records? CD's? dont remeber what it was called, but you get the point)

Oh well ya, if your dad wants a Blu-ray player and you want a Ps3 then the logical choice would be a PS3.
Hope it works out for you. Good luck.

Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

and another thing is the price, at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation_3#Release_data_and_pricing link, if you look at the prices in the different countries, why does it say it cost 951$, but in US it cost 599$, why does it say so much different??
