I've seen no sign of a mature community, just aload of vanbois that flame you when yous ay you don't like something.
Then I suggest you take a look at some WoW forums
What is happening here is that the defacto "RPG" players have been waiting for a game like Vanguard for years. And there are many people who come and bash the game because it does not play like WoW. There is no point in wanting to change a game. If you don't like RPG and prefer Wow (or something else, Wow is an example here), then go play that something else. But please don't come here to change the game so many of us have been waiting for.
That said everybody, even Sigil, acknowledged that VG was released too early with many bugs and an overall lack of polish. But I see nothing game breaking there and with the patches it is improving daily. The game is just awesome for me.
As much as I understand that Vanguard main focus is not PVP. It is still what i'm interested (You guys should try to realise that people have different tastes and views. I don't care about the quest... I like grinding with my guild and killing people on downtimes)
Great ! So more power to you !
Myself I would prefer some more serious Pvp system (like in L2 for example), with consequences that discourage people who enjoy ganking and wait at altars for players to respawn so they can kill them over and over again.
If PvP was done right it would be so much more fun, IMHO. That way we really could have RP-PVP servers; look at L2, everybody is on the same servers. There is no need for separate PVP servers in a good system. But as you say, many enjoy it as it is.
Ponioc your right Vanguard is not balanced right for PvP and it does have alot of issues there, mainly because PvP in Vanguard was an after thought to appeal to those who like it. I would expect it to only get better but if you want a real MMO geared for PvP Vanguard is not your bag of sugar.
Well it;s currently the only MMO that almost offers everything my guild loves.
My guildies got spoiled by the features of games like SWG, where you could have a City, a Ship, a good crafting system and some PVP. Going on WOW was really not for us, we started on launch and left 3 or 4 months later... Ironforge does not act as a good guildhall. We wanted our city back, our freedom back and most of all, something moer then instances.
Vanguard however provides most of that, crafting is again important too! it's cool to run around with a few lumberjacks to find some wood you know Now put that on a PVP server and it's a real party... You're running around and have to be careful of the Enviroment + a few dangerous players that might pop on our ass anytime... Ventrilo is always very interesting for that lol.
The thing with other MMOs (at least the current) Is...
WOW = Boring... Nothing more to say.
EQ2 = Humm... no
9 Dragons = Loads of Fun but again, I don't want to be a wanderer!
Mankind = Well that MMO was amazing back in 1998...
EVE = I still love it but my guildies are having hard time on that one so... (CRY)
MapleStory = I'm Joking....
The list goes on....
Every game out there are purely oriented on quests... Yes, not the old MMOs but seriously, I don't want to play Dark Age or something that's like 5 years old hehe!
Vanguard has realistic graphics where as WoW has low quality graphics
Eh, no. WoW has graphics that are less taxing on a system but they are hardly low quality. The artwork is tremendous, the colors are wonderful, the diversity in colors and textures in gear and scenery and such is very, very good,. Vanguard has the "realism" school, which more often than not means a lot of browns and greys, and so while it looks sharp, it's actually pretty boring to look at when compared to WoW's graphics, in my opinion.

Yep that's imho true, and more so on a mid-range system. You definitely need to play on maxed quality with HDR and pump the contrast in the video settings to at least 65% to give some more appeal to the VG colors.

Art? Well i guess cartoons are art too... just not, uhh nice art? Show me a ss of wow and vg, and the word ART explodes from the latter.
Thank you for all the superb comments guys! This sight is really efficient.
I've narrowed my MMORPG browsing to 2 choices: VG and WOW (yes I haven't played it yet).
From what I've figured out this is what I'm guessing are the pros for each games:
WoW Pros: Less grind, better pvp (although still not great), better quests, mass instances (contreversial, but sounds good to me), A LOT less bugs (I'll edit and post more if I figure out any because I like to keep track about the good things about games).
Vanguard Pros: Mature community, good PvE, diplomacy, doesn't "hold your hand" throughout the game, longer, more races and classes, better graphics (I'll edit if i find more pros)
Looks like I'm leaning towards Vanguard but I'm still not sure.
Or should I wait for AoC, LOTRO etc. first.
Do you guys recommend that I get WoW or Vanguard more?
Thanks for the comments guys! You've been a big help.
To me the choice is simple, if you want PvP go for WoW, if you like PvE go for Vanguard. I have played WoW for several months, it's a good game but I am not a PvP fane and the cartoonish look did me in. I played Vanguard since the begining of Beta 2 and really enjoy the direction it has gone. It is the first mmo since AC1 and EQ1 that really gives me that challange and feel of hard to put down. Sure it has bugs but this is the best and hardest working groop of developers I have had the pleasure to work with so I have very high hopes. LotR, not sure I have never been happy yet with an MMO that was tied to a story line.
PVP in WOW sucks. If you want hardcore PVP go VG FFA loot server it matters if you die and your always watching you back, which is what makes PVP worth while.

So you're saying both the PvP and the PvE in VG is better?
I tried playing LoTRO a while ago, and at least for me, and this was like back in November or so. I've played WoW, quit 2 or 3 times and started back up when I wanted an easy, at least in my opinion, MMO. I have been playing VG now for 2 weeks, and only level 11 ( I haven't played that much).
I've been playing as a Vulmane, and going into the ogre caverns as a druid and trying to run through it is just dang fun. Having 2 groups compete for the next mob which is named, is fun (one of the reasons I dislike nearly complete instancing). I've gotten some interesting weapons so far, (caster weapons usually have some type of castable attack). I'm enjoying the crafting. It's not 100% chance, and you can make different qualities of items, very fun.
Negative: I've tried duoing, and with a bug, the group kept on getting disbanded every 5 minutes (always in the middle end of a fight). Unless you buy binding orbs to bind equipment to yourself, and you lose your corpse in a dungeon, you either have to summon your corpse back at an alter and lose all your experience, or fight your way back in, nekkid (could be construed as a positive depending on how you look at it). It's laggy, especially when you log in or "port" yourself to you bind point. Not 100% instant gratification. Personal opinion, could use a few more quests, even with lesser money and xp rewards, it gives a focused task.
Pro: At least on a non-PvP server, the community seems more mature and willing to help, not insulting you calling you noob and telling you to learn to read (bad experiences in WoW when I went over from horde to alliance to try out a dorf cleric). Plenty of lore, so much, that I want to create a new Vulmane just so I can start reading over it again (would be cool if they gave you a book of lore that updates as you learn it). For me, who started my MMO's back after Ruins of Kunark came out for EQ and quit after Planes of Power, it has a similar feel.
I've played multiple MMO's; EQ1&2 WoW, Ragnarok pre and post beta, DDO, EVE, Horizons, Hero, SWG, Guild Wars, Ryzom, City of Villans, RF Online, L2 and probably several more that I'm forgetting.
Provided you like an older-school feeling game, EQ'esque I would definitely try out VG, please ignore the SOE name with it, because as of right now, they only host the servers and helped finance the game (requiring for the game to be pushed out quicker than inteneded), you will, at least in my experience have moved on from the game before any massive changes have changed the game for either the better or worse. If you want quick and simplistically fun gameplay, play WoW.
The choice is so ******** hard. From what I've heard I don't think I'll be dissappointed with either one. Knowing that I will probably love them both makes the choice all the harder. I know both of them are really good in their own different ways and they both have a monthly fee and knowing that when I finally do choose I'll be addicted to either one of them. Knowing this makes the choice all the harder.
If you could wait for AOC to come out, you should. Try to get in beta as well.
AOC = PVP for a common purpose.
VG = PVE for uber gear/bragging rights.
Yes, both games have both PVE/PVP but both is specialized towards either PVE or PVP.
Why spend money for WOW because of PVP? When a better PVP game is coming out? And if PVE is for you, then get Vanguard. But like everyone is saying, I'd give VG a few months.
In my opinion VG and WOW are as good as each other. For some of you veterans you must be either rolling your eyes or your jaw is dropped but in my opinion they look as good as each other and that is what makes this so hard for me.
I keep hearing people say if you like pve get VG if you like PVP get WoW or if you like simplistic, fun gameplay, get WoW or if you're an old schooler get VG well I like both sides and I find it hard just to pick one based on pve or pvp because I like both.
Each disadvantage is cancelled out buy an advantage. For example: WoW has worse community but makes up for it with simplicity and less grind. VG has bugs but makes up for it with gameplay and pve. WoW might be repetitive but you reap your rewards with quick levelling and fun quests. VG has worse pvp but makes up for it with better races and classes and the diplomacy skill.
It's a stalemate. I can't find a complete, even if tiny, edge one has over the other because every edge is cancelled out by an edge the other game has. Do you get what I'm trying to say or am I just babbling?
And I know most people have a complete "side" of which game is better. It's possibly just that I haven't played either that I can't find the "edge" one game has over the other.
Vanguard's PvE isn't about uber gear and bragging rights.
It has the best questing I've ever seen in a MMORPG, being more like a single player PPG in the way it engages you and throws interesting content at you. Exploration. Crafting. Diplomacy. Fun combat. Roleplaying. It's all about the experience - Which is what a MMORPG should be.
Vanguard has purposeful PvP coming down the pipe according to the president of Sigil, which I believe will be similar to DAoC from his comments. Battlegrounds, keep sieges, naval battles, siege equipment, etc.
If you want UO and AC style PvP, then there's also the PvP servers.

This is exactly what I meant in my previous post. Everything cancels each other out. I'm a hardcore pvp player and a carebear, so it's really hard to pick when both games look as good as each other but specialized towards either pvp or pve.
They even cancel each advantage and disadvantage out in recommendations. My friends recommend WoW and my family recommends VG.

Yes I'm one of those people. The problem is Vanguard is not that game.

Well without subscribing you have a month of free trial but you have to buy the game from game stores for around $30-$40
Best MMO since...AC1 imo.
