I have not bought Vanguard...and probably never will. I do enjoy the discussion, however. It seems that you can replace VANGUARD and put in ANYNEWMMO and the discussion will be the same. Every game has its lovers and its haters.
I found no compelling conversation with regard to its graphics yet. I will refer everyone back to UO with its AWEFUL graphics. UO has more subscribers right now than many of the newer games. My point is this: Graphics (although important at first) does not make or break a MMO. Otherwise UO would have folded long ago.
I know Ive stated this in another forum for another game, but it is so simple to me. What does give an MMO longevity? I submit to you these things:
1. Customer support. In the native tongue of the subscribers. With customer support personnel who actually have the power to make changes to keep their customers happy. This has been the failing of many MMO's as of late. Sony has the worst rated customer support by far than any other gaming company. John Smedley is to blame. UO has the best rated customer support. No wonder UO still has close to 100,000 subscribers and all but the Smedley household fled SWG and EQ2.
2. Content that works, makes sense, and doesn't require the efforts of 3 guilds, a nasa computer, and howler monkeys working around the clock i order the break the code and enter the dragons chambers.
3. Any game that does not include a true player based economy and player housing will always fail to keep the attention of 80% of the player base.
4. Don;t lie to gamers. We're smarter than you give us credit. If you tell us a quest IS in the game, then it better be in the game. If you tell us that "The Sleeper" can't be woken, then we will find a way to wake him. If you tell us that it is not your intention to have us camp mobs for loot, reward, or faction but then we find that in order to advance in the game we have to camp mobs for loot, reward, or faction, then you are a worthless piece of human waste and soon your player base will leave youin droves.
5. If it's broke - fix it. If it can't be fixed - take it out. If you have not the heart to tell us - go work for McDonalds because it is true that this is simply a game, it is also true that it is one that we pay good money to buy and a monthly fee to play. It is MORE than "just a game" as the infamous Smed posted in his Station Blog.
No, I have not bought Vanguard. I have nothing but contempt for Sony. It is unfortunate that Brad felt he had to go crawling back to SOE after creating and developing Vanguard. If it was not for SOE having thier grubby little hands on the profits of this game I am sure that EB Games would have much more pre-orders. EB Games said that it was the worst opening day for such a highly anticipated game that they can remember in recent years.

Have comtempt for people who do actual evil in the world, not some company who changed your game or didn't hop to when you called customer support. It still doen't cease to amaze me how some knuckle dragger will hate sony because he had some support issue that didn't get resolved and yet ignore the million other companies in the world who are actually killing people, polluting the planet, torturing animals to death and turning an entire generation into a bunch of lazy fat slobs.

Yeah because mmorpg.com is the correct forum for discussing the abuses of multinational corporations.

Nice. The true nature of hate shows its face. I love finding the socialists on these boards. He sees I'm from the US and operate USGameRoom.com and immediately calls me "knuckle dragger."
I wonder if the forum admins will delete his post or mine?

What does this have to do with the game? going a little to far in showing your love for a game arent you?
Last time i checked, in a forum, whether its online or in person, is there to encourage opposite view points. Such venom for a person that disagrees with you.
Unfortunately Americans get this type of treatment alot in games. We are here to play, have fun, and yet we have to dodge the misguided views of socialistic Marxists.
I'd love to debate the meager views of the uneducated, but alas, It's no fun sparring with the retarded.
If my opinion on Vanguard offened anyone, then you should reevaluate the relavancy of your life. I strongly oppose politics being brought into any game but reserve the right to defend my beliefs whenever confronted with discrimination or bias based on my way of life and the country in which I live. Too many online games cater to the liberal 3rd world view while at the same time punishing any form of support for the USA.

You hate SOE, that's your right. It is my right to think you are ignorant for doing so. Had nothing to do with the USA banner, I love america. You can breathe now.

Unfortunetly your recipe for longevity has been proven wrong. I submit WoW as evidence A, Lineage 2 as evidence B, City of Heroes as evidence C. I could submit several other MMO's that break one if not all of your longevity requirements.

Point well put, however, WOW, Lineage 2 and City of Heroes all released in 2004. Far from proven yet. UO released in 1997.
