best free mmorpg?

hey me and an old buddy who lives in another part of the country want to start playing an mmorgp together. neither of us want to get sucked into World of Warcraft (been there...) so we're looking for something more just kind of fun and casual and most importantly, free.

any suggestions? i used to play UO i found that to be really really fun, but it's so old now i thought maybe there was some other option out there.

    UO is still the best option, if not try Anarchy Online.

    Anarchy Online is ok, the graphics could definitely use an upgrade, I'd suggest FFXI that's extremely fun and doesn't get boring, I wish I could return to it. Never tried UO...wish I had, I always hear good reviews. Voyage Century is fun to get hooked on, I'd wait another 4-5 months before doing so though. Wish I had :p.

    You can play Entropia Universe, which is alot more graphic and is technically free... Although if you really want to do alot ingame you might consider investing a little money.  At least try and and see how you like it : ) the community is the best part. www.entropiaforum.com

    err ya try maplestory (not that fun at the end but its good at the begining), gunz (free fps with fanstasy), ghostsoul online (fun =)) and maybe warrock?

    Maplestory is a great game, it kept me occupied for a couple of months, i'm currently downloading Scions of Fate so maybe give that a try?

    Guild wars is no subscription, but its a bit bare compared to WoW, which is a definite no no.

    There aren't many anymore tbh, most of the good ones are outdated, like Runescape (best mmo ever!) but look around, and remember that just because they have bad reviews doesn't mean that you won't fall in love with them! Runescape has the worst reviews ever and it had me hooked for well over 2 years!
