Quick couple of questions about buying..

DaProdigyDaProdigy Member Posts: 20
I'm planning to go pick up EQ2 later on. I've been playing the trial and I'm pretty interested to see where this goes. Now, I'm only getting the classic version because I don't want pay 40-50 bucks for a game I might not continue playing. I realize that the latest expansion comes with the previous ones. I'll definitely look into buying expansions if I like the game, but I'm starting basic. Couple of things, though..

With EQ2 "Classic", what disadvantage will I be at with others who have purchased expansions? I've heard something about better spells, or achievements or something like that. How much does that matter?

And the first month is free, right?

Player housing? Is that instanced? Can other people view your house? Or is it player-city run like SWG? Can random people find your house or is it invitation-only?

On PvP servers, I assume it's only evil against good? Meaning that within 8 levels, I can attack any good player (if evil) or vice versa?

Can evil players travel to good cities, or is that restricted?

If you buy the classic version you'll be very disapointed in your limitations.

The expansions are what brought me back 2 years later.   The "classic" is what drove me away 2 years ago.

There are tons of features you won't be able to use or see with just the base client.

Furthermore, ifyou decide you want the expansions you'll have to buy them separately which ...in the end will probably cost you quite a bit.

I would just pay the $39.99 for the EoF expansion which includes the original client...the latest expansion...and all the expansions in between.

EoF is wondeful... the old continents...look 2 years old.

I can answer some of your question. I'm just starting out playing EQ2 a week ago and have the same though  like you about didn't want to paid much for the game that I might not continue to play so I buy the original EQ2 for $11.

But when I played for a while and do some research I found that without expansion your gonna miss some of contents even in low lvl like Achievements system that start to gain with lvl 10 and new race to play The Fey in Echoes of Faydwer (EoF) expansion and lots of quest , recipe , item that your can't do and get if your don't have expansion also your can buy EoF and got all the previous expansion Kingdom of Sky (KoS) and Desert of Flame (DoF).

For me now I'm really disappoint about about all I 've miss if don't have the xpac I'm really want to know and feel all the game mechanic and system but now I can't because  expansion have effect on low lvl too that make me can't judge am I gonna play this game for longtime or not.Now I'm thinking about to buy the xpac or not  and stop lvl my char at lvl 10 ^_^;.

You can check these links for feature of each expansion

    http://everquest2.station.sony.com/expansions/echoesoffaydwer/flash.vm (EoF)

    http://everquest2.station.sony.com/expansions/kingdomofsky/features.vm (KoS)

    http://everquest2.station.sony.com/expansions/desertofflames/ (DoF)

And to remind your again if your buy only EoF will got all previous xpac include 30 day free playtime or 60 day I'm not sure but that for new account only so if your already play the game with original EQ2 and then buy EoF and register it your don't get the 30 Day free again

Player housing? Is that instanced? Can other people view your house? Or is it player-city run like SWG? Can random people find your house or is it invitation-only?

One of game feature that I'm really like it. You can let's your house open free to other people to access but with limitation as visitor your can put any item for sell in ya house  put any furniture or pets or anything your find in the world that have option to place it in your house some are really amazing.  It's very highly customize I Would said.

On PvP servers, I assume it's only evil against good? Meaning that within 8 levels, I can attack any good player (if evil) or vice versa?

    Hmm not sure about this because I'm still lvl 10 at stater city atm ^_^;;;

Can evil players travel to good cities, or is that restricted?

    Yes!. But like in other MMORPG your can get pwned by the city guard ^_^;;;

Hope that help and sorry for my bad English

Without the expansions you can't level past 50, play as Fae, go to any of the EoF zones (Gfay/Kelethin, Butcherblock, etc) and you can't earn achievment points or use the achievment system.

Wow.. that kinda sucks. So, in essence, SOE basically "forces" you to buy the expansions just to keep up. I just came back from the store and I got the classic EQ2. I glanced at EoF but I'm not ready to shell out 40 bucks for the game just yet.

I've been playing MMOs since the first EQ and I've never purchased a seperate expansion.. but oh well. If I really like EQ2, I can easily go back and get EoF. But I can't see myself shelling out 40 bucks on a game I really want to further try out.

    Thanks for the input, btw.

Oh, and I think huntz is on to something. Just to continue trying out the game, I'll play until about level 10 and stop gaining xp. If I decide I want to stick with it, I'll buy the expansions and won't waste achievements. If not, then just do whatever.

    That'd work, right?

It would but I’m not sure it’s worth it. You don’t permanently lose achievement xp, it’s just harder to get.  At level 70 all your xp gets turned into achievement xp so you can still max out. It’s a little annoying but not crippling.

It will suck a little not to have the EoF zones since they are better then the old ones and that is where a lot of the action currently is, but again you can work around it.  As for “forcing” you to get all the expansions, that’s really not a fair characterization.  EoF is cheaper then the base game was when it was released and includes all the expansions.  $40 is a very fair price for it considering it’s cheaper and has more content then any other MMO out there.

No one is "forcing" you to do anything.  Paying for expansions is the nature of business.  Doesnt matter if its an online or offline game you will pay for an expansion if you want more content.

No one is holding you hostage and giving you an 'or else'.   You can just have a bunch of toons and lvl to 50 without AA, etc.  I should point out though that while you play, bear in mind that most of the group action right now is in the latest expansion.  This is just because its new.  You should prepare for this by knowing that it may be a little more difficult to find groups is all.  But have fun with it.  If your on Permafrost, send me a tell.

It should be noted that the EoF expansion is friggin HUGE and you can basically level from 1 to 70 without ever leaving the EoF areas.

I have a friend who came back and rolled a Fae. He's about lvl 50 now and I finally got him to leave the EoF zones just to start some heritage quests elsewhere. If I hadn't told him about all the status points and Achievement points he's missing out on I'm fully convinced he wouldn't have ever left.

Out of all the expansions I'd say EoF is the only one I would say is a requirement for getting the most out of your gameplay experience. Sinking Sands has it's moments but meh I was never impressed. Kingdom of Sky has some REALLY good quests and interesting content. Some nice instances like Halls of Fate and Nest. Since you get all the expansions if you buy the retail box of the EoF expansion it's no big deal. But yeah, check out EoF for sure.

I used to play on the PVP servers so what I say may be a little out of date because I know shortly after I left they changed a few things around.

    PvP is City vs City

    There are 3 factions

    Freeport vs Qeynos/Kelethin vs Exiles

Freeport can attack and be attacked by Qeynos/Kelethin and Exiles.

Qeynos/Kelethin can attack and be attacked by Freeport and Exiles.

Exiles can be attacked by Exiles, Qeynos/Kelethin and Freeport.

Trade used to be limited between the cities (IE no trade/mail/brokers).  But they added Brokers out in contested areas so you take a huge risk buying from the other side because you are carrying money and if you get killed you lose a good chunk of it.

    No PVP under lvl 10.

Zones (armor/weapons, crafting, everything) are sorted into Tiers:

    Tier 1 =lvl 1-9 zone (No PvP)

Tier 2 =lvl 10-19 zone (+-6 (used to be 8 but I think they lowered this one)

    Tier 3 =lvl 20-29 zone (+-8)

    Tier 4 =lvl 30-39 zone (+-12 or is it 10? not sure)

    Tier 5 =lvl 40-50 zone (+-14)

Tier 6 =lvl 51-60 zone (No level limit)

Tier 7 =lvl 61-70 zone (No level limit)

Housing is Instanced and in the cities.  You can lock everybody out, let anybody in and limit it to a few people.
