Been in 1 1/2 years now, I can manage with the lag issues, I don't mind bad loot, I cope with looking high-end players zooming by with fancy stuff, I cope with the INSANELY high skill increase curve (it WILL be really bad after some time).
Why? I believe in this concept I guess. And community is really helpful and great.
And actually I'm doing ok myself. So far I have only 4939 in rifle skills , my main profession is hunting, but if I pick my targets carefully and consume ammo thoughtfully, I'm ok, even make tiny profits now and then. Nothing I could withdraw thats for sure.
This game is for long time. Absolutely no point just dropping in for month even or so, you gotta have patience.
And to add: graphics is not top-notch, there are already many much better-looking games out there. But still the extreme variety of the 2 vast continents, especially Eudoria, can stun at times.
I gave it a shot.....but the graphics were ugly, ugly, ugly...the controls were counter-intuitive to say the least......but the main deal breaker................was the LAG. I tried several times to play but the lag itself, made the game completely unplayable for me. I honestly couldn't get this game off my computer fast enough. That's just my personal experience / opinion of this particular game.
Yah but I forgive a lot to EU (well I'm addicted already as is not IQ 200 needed to guess). It's not too easy to maintain couple of continents, tens of kilometers wide where you can move seamlessly from server to another, all the time keeping bank quality security and stuff. I'm sure there will be new 3D engine coming (yes it's needed), and then oblivion will be in oblivion. JK
Anyway in a way I feel I'm still in the pioneering stage. Rules change yearly, so those who were brave betatesters now have items worth 10s thousands $ each. Maybe, when those other poor souls join in after couple of ears, I can sell some of my much valued stuff then, buy an land area and live IRL with my income virtual.
There are couple of ppl I know (not personally) to really do that, get sufficient monthly income just working in f*king virtual pixellage. In which other 3D game there is even a theoretical possibility for that?
But really thats not but for 0.01% of participants as anyone can understand. Fortunately we have our community, which, though seemingly greedy (and actually too), can laugh at their bad luck and whatever. The setup where you are running on landscapes filled with various beasts, with skills and weapons that are FAR from omnipotent, yourself without any special wizardly skills except maybe personal tp chip+ some less than magnificent mindforce tricks - that can make every hunting, and especially mining trip a lengthy adventure. That very much feet on soil -feeling make you feel very conscious of your vulnerability, And when you fail that makes good stories to your friends ingame.
Most other MMO's you are gonna play will have a montly fee anyways, so technically you are pumping money into them to be able to play the game... Theoretically if you are lucky in Entropia Universe you can make alot of money on very little investment, and i wont lie to you.. It is liek a casino in alot of ways, but you dont just lose or win... On 15-20 dollars a month if you are efficient you can easily play Entropia... There are also other ways to make money in the game. It is a real money economy and so therefore it is a buyers market. Alot of players have made a fair bit of money buying and selling items in the game... I myself have played a fair amount in Entropia, and i can honestly say i have made a ton more money than i ever invested by just holding onto items and by hunting and mining efficiently. I have played several other MMO's including Everquest, SWG, and open beta of WOW, and in my opinion Entropia has the closest tight knit community (playerbase) out of any of those... People are generally very respectfull of each other in the game, and there are many great fansites. At least give it a try, there is no initial cost!

/sarcastic hat on But MindArk spins that you can make back REAL money in the game, with great loot drops, globals and deals! /sarcastic hat off
it USED to be like a casino I can remember getting at least 1 small global every few day, that is now completely gone. You may have a 1 in a billion change of getting anything now. They have gotten just plain greedy...
My personal experience with this game was fairly good, though I ended up spending way too much money on it... (roughly 200 us dollars, which to some people may not sound like a lot, but is more then I could really afford.. anyhow) ... I didn't mind spending the money initially, but considering what I got in return I personally think it was too much to make this "game" worth my while... it is possible to play completely for free if you're willing to spend literally days sweating, it wouldn't be so bad if the items didn't deteriorate at the rate they do and you then have to pay pretty steep prices for the repairs.
the graphics weren't unreasonable, have seen better, have definately seen much much worse... didn't have much trouble with lag, but haven't played in about a year and half... I'm sure there are some people that are able to make a profit of the game, but that will require a huge investment to get to a level where you're able to deal with the beasties that drop the good stuff (investment of either time or money or some combination of the two)
All in all it wasn't for me, but I didn't think it was quite as bad as some of the people in this thread have been trying to paint it of as, just don't expect to make a lot of money off of the game and take things in stride.
I was in it for over a year (and spent 1000's) , when I first start it was possible to 'break even' and sometimes if lucky get a small global (like 2 or 300 Ped) but those days are gone now. The got so greedy its now spend, spend, spend with nothing in return.
The truth is that Entropia, as a game, in the best case is mediocre. Has bad lag, Big bugs, mediocre graphics, and high system requirements. You CAN'T make money in this game. If is a way to make money, MindArk, will change the rules of the game, so it be no longer possible. Playing and paying for the play, is like buying a car with no seat, and the dealer will told you that it will call you to a service station and it will be added in a short time. You get the call after you get used to drive without seat, you go with the car in service, and when you take it, you see that is no seat still, but is a door missing. When you ask why, they will tell you that is a better car now, and you have to wait a little more for the seat. Then, again it will change the wheal, they will remove the windows, and it will charge you for adding a new dvd system on the car. And you have to pay for every inspection. And after a few trips to service, you realized that the car now is far worst then was initial purchase. You will want the money back, and they will say that you will get the initial money back, minus the cost of all the inspections, and you have to wait 60 days. If you have not understand that, is ok, this is how Entropia, you will never understand how this game is working, and you will never make profit. And Mindark care only for the players that will deposit like 100K$ in the game, for selling them property, that has a 0 value for the system, but has a value only for other players. They recently changed the skill system, at a way that is impossible to reach a certain level without spending 100K$ for that. If you want to spend 20K$ in a game without any guarantee to get back, the you are a millionaire and you are welcome to this game. But if you decide to play without depositing is a good game. For a free game is ok, but for a commercial game, is mediocre. The game play is absent, the game has no Quest, and if you have high skills, the you can gamble more money, and you will able to loose more money, until you will reach a level when you will have big skills and big equipment (after spending some millions of peds(10PED=1$) and a few years ) and you will make a profit, only that then Mindark will change the system, and you gone loose again. And the worst thing is that Mindark has no respect for the players, they respect only the players money.
I´m not sure what you meant about that car you bought thing or your pin point calculation on how much you can lose or profit , so here is another way to look at it .
Entropia Universe is for free, free to download no subscription´s .
I pay $12 a month for my account with WoW so lets say I play with $12 in EU.
Now with this money I can hunt ,mine or craft, now I´m not hunting biggest mobs or crafting for big bucks or with the best items in the start of the game , but when I do these things I get SKILLS and have FUN in the community
Now as time goes on I´m playing the game and getting more skills in the process just like in WoW or EvE ,and in turn I level up and improve to higher levels and unlock new abilities.
Maybe I play for a year or two and at the end of that period my character has collected SKILLS which I can take out of my character and sell in the in game auction and the money I get for them I can take out of EU back into my pocket.
Now my point is ,there are not a lot of games that you pay subscription to that will give you some of your money back.
Keep in mind you might get lucky over that period you play and make a profit.
This is a good game if you play smart with your money and don´t run before you can walk ,part of the game is finding the right information to improve your game play this info you can get on many sites and forums or join a society .
p.s If WoW offered me some money back I would´nt take it,its totally worth it;)
