Eve gets a review

KyleranKyleran Member LegendaryPosts: 44,079

I know this is an online forum, but I opened up my new issue of CGW er.. I mean, PC Gaming for Windows and they had a rare re-review of an MMORPG that they previously had slammed back when the game went live.

This time around they gave it a 9/10 and it scored highly in almost every category.  Made me want to give the game a try. (I've been fence sitting for years)

I realize all you Eve players already know this.... (you might find the review on 1-Up.com) but I thought it might have been of some minor interest.....

Rut-Roh. Don't let Gameloading see that as his theory is that all the previous low-scoring reviews of EVE from 2003 would remain unchanged today.

So far that's at least 3 90%+ reviews of EVE-O: Revelations that I've seen.

Not having read the review I find it funny that you then go on to write "EVE deserves that rating" since:

    A) You have no idea what their reference is.

    B) You have no idea what criteria they use to get to their conclusion.

Simply looking at a rating gives absolutely no indication of a game's worth or whether or not it will be your cup of tea. I enjoyed playing Neverwinter Nights back in the day and contributed to a few Persistent Worlds and I recommended the game to a friend since I was having so much fun. Neverwinter Nights won enough accolades to rival any game out there and it had an extremely active community. But my friend found it totally un-inspiring and gave up on it after a very short while.

So to put faith in reviews is like putting faith in the ability of flies to find the most tasty pile of dung. The flies know what they like but you might not exactly share their point of view. In my example above I would have been the fly.

Anyone is entitled to their own oppinion and if you can back it up with arguments and points of general interest you should even share it. If you cannot the sign on your back should read: Please ignore me.

EVE is very good if you 'get'  it, if you keep wandering around aimlessly and cluelessly it'll go down in flames because you'll make tons of very costly mistakes, and then go blame it on someone else than yourself. My advise is to read a lot on it, read the EVE forums, the stickies, the newbie area. Read, read and read more, then play the trial and forget about learning skills for a while.

Understand that this game is not meant to be soloed (anyone saying it CAN be soloed is technically right, but it's still a stupid answer though regardless if it's technically correct). The thing is, you can't trust anyone in EVE... ever, this means that will start to build things, your wallet, ships, corp, effort.. whatever and at some point some mofo will come over and take it all away or shoot it to bits. Granted, you gave him the opportinity but it's a harsh part of EVE nonetheless.

You have to be able to cope with that.

Does EVE deserve a 9/10 rating though?  Or has the bar just been pushed so low that the "good" MMO's seem to shine more than they did in the past?  It's really kind of hard to say.

I'll be the first one here to state that I feel that EVE is currently the best MMORPG product on the market.  If I were into their playstyles only WoW, DAOC and EQ2 really seem worth my money today.  But the bottom line is that other than the top few MMORPG's there is so much TRASH on the market the few GOOD MMORPG's seem to shine more than they really do.

    After all:

What did WoW Bring to the genre other than a 'cleaner' implementation of already tried-and-true mechanics?

What did EQ2 bring in that was really new?

EVE stands alone in that they broke tons of new ground in 1 single game.  What other game offers players the ability to completely control vast areas of the world?  To drive each other completely out of their territory and even destroy what equates to YEARS of effort by other players?  No other "newer" MMORPG on the market provides such harsh reality in it's game world.  This is what makes EVE stand heads and tails above the competition.

By comparison everything else pales.... I'll agree with that.  by THAT standard, sure, EVE deserves a 9/10

However:  There are SO many things that I wish EVE could add.  So many features that have yet to see the light of day in EVE (or any other MMORPG).  So many NEW and INNOVATIVE ideas that are still NOT available in games.

So does EVE deserve a 9/10 Or do all MMORPG's deserve much lower scores because in the past 4 years there hasn't been much, if any, innovation in the MMORPG industry?  EVE broke new ground when it was released.  WOW polished old ideas.  EQ2 is a re-hash of an older game with a slightly better interface.  Guild Wars isn't an MMORPG but did do some pretty innovative things...  Pretty much every OTHER game released since EVE has been a flop.

So... does EVE/WoW/EQ2/GuildWars really deserve 9/10?

Or do all the craptastic games out there artificially inflate the 'value' of the "good" MMORPG's because there's no real competition out there?

Seriously... if EVE wasn't available for me to play I probably just wouldn't play an MMORPG right now.

I'm sure EQ2/WoW players feel pretty much the same.  There just really aren't any real quality games out there.   The few really good ones are either so old that their player bases have dwindled to uselessness (DAOC, UO, AC1, EQ1 etc) or have outright been shut down (Ryzom, which I honestly didn't find all that great).

Bottom line:  IMO the few games that are 'above average' have so little competition that they seem much much better than they really are.

Don't get me wrong.  EVE is a great game.  I love it.  but to give it a 9/10 when anyone you ask (people who ENJOY the current game that is) can think of at least 20 things they'd love to see improved upon?  Nah that seems a bit too much to me.

or you can not play.....there should be a way to deal with cheaters....and my way of dealing with cheaters and CCP is not play their flawed game....

realize the game is all about isk / very boring grinding for isk.....skills really don't matter......its not hard to amass skills, letting cheaters prosper and steal is not just part of the game, but CCP constantly makes design flaw mistakes to help cheaters....

contracts are one way to cheat people, not the only way.....I was officially told its okay to cheat people using this method, its not an exploit or bug, so look at my post on Avoid EVE and feel free to cheat others using contracts......

    ==========================
The game is dead not, this game is good we make it and Romania Tv give it 5 goat heads, this is good rating for game.

You are one of those people who doesn't get the game... there's no cheating done in contracts for the simple reasons that it just takes 2 rules to prevent being scammed when it comes to contracts.

Anyone unable to check for those simple rules, which you can check in a milisecond, and then gets scammed wasn't paying attention. People who don't pay attention will pay the price, blaming that on anyone but yourself pretty much proves my points I made in my post. You haven't read on stuff, you haven't learned, you weren't paying attention, therefore you make a costly mistake.

Learn, adapt or (in your case) leave, but don't spout nonsense about the game mechanics.

Crime is a part of this game just like its a part of real life, ccp isnt gonna protect your babies.  This is a thread on the official eve-online forums about crime and punishment, which means that it is an aknowledged part of the game.   you can read about many many scams that have happened throughout eve history.  play smart and you will be rich.
