Since every was universally disgusted at the stupid poll that was made with 3 choices, I thought I'd make a better one
I think it is a pretty good list being limited to 10 choices. I could extend it a bit =P
edit: yes! you can't edit typo's in a poll.. So now I look like a moron!

I usually start out trying to play as some kind of gimp hybrid I can't balance correctly, then I play the tank class.
Hahaha.. nicely put..
I also forgot about archers in this, but for most purposes stealthers are going to encompass that.
And about ranged DD? That would Offensive Caster, right?

based on their role:
- melee damage dealer ( that can be offensive type of fighter)
-ranged damage dealer ( that can be rogue, ranger, archer or something like that)
-buffer/healer ( well that can be priest, cleric, etc etc
-nuker ( that can be wizard or any mages with offensive magic skills)
-tanks ( defensive type of fighter, usually knight class with heavy armor and shield)
hopefully it helps
pets
And to the other list of classes pointed out here, I can agree.. but that is too vague in a way.

The one thing I think is funny about playing casters is that I am smart enough to conjure devastation elemental magic and blast enemies with fireballs, lightning, etc but I can't figure out how to wear anything but kleenex as armor.
I voted healer, but it really depence on the game and how the game set up the classes.

The MMO gaming blog I write for.
Before I started WoW I played Monks. I always thought it would be easier to play if I didn't have to worry about weapons and could stick to hand to hand. Plus, I liked the idea of honing one's body to become a lethal weapon.
Come to find out martial arts/monks usually become another easily replaced DPSer.
Now I usually play Support/Healer because I favor being useful in battle. I also like healer because they often make or break a good group. If some DPSer is a slack ass I can usually manage the prolonged fight. If a healer is slack I can't do anything but try to CC as a DPSer.

My favorite all time class was probably the bladedancer from lineage 2; He could buff his party memebers but the buff only lasted 2 minutes, so you had to really pay attention. He delt respectable damage, but the challange came from using his magic debuffs/attacks in pvp. It took alot of skill to juggle his debuff skills to aid allies in grim situations, make sure your party was buffed, and actually killed enemies without getting rolled, because he didn't have the luck of evasion to save him.
In WoW that meant Warlock.
I haven't played enough to be sure of my EQ2 class, but Swashbuckler looks good.

And my favorite class of all time so far is the Warden from DAoC. Any class with a jack of all trades feel has a better chance of keeping me interested longer =P

Druids ftw!

And if you have class based games, I feel bad for you. There are so few true skill/attribute based games out there. Wish was going to be a great game, but the axe of financial reality slayed that one.
