I was just accepted into the City of Heroes Beta, with only a few days til release..... I really want to try it, but I have been unable to download the installer, it asks me for my user name and passwords, I enter it, it asks again, etc... then tells me I am unauthorized. I've registered, entered my registration code, followed all the instructions, tried my CoH forums account, plaync account, everything... but nothing works. Has anyone else had this problem? And does anyone have the Beta Installer or know an alternate download location?
And since I am on the subject.... anyone in the CoH beta... how is it? Graphics look good, concept seems good, but sounds like another pointless lvling game, especially if there is no PvP.

I have been in beta for a few weeks now and i will say that it does look like another level grind, but it does seem fun. And to be honest the character creation alone is worth the entry money.
I think the Pw you have to use is either for the COH forums on COH.com, or your playNC account.
Muahahahahahahaha

If you actually took the time to follow some of the quest it does get pretty interesting. I am doing the Vozilok quest right now and it is nicely done. Im not big on doing quest in games but the story behind the quest are pretty nice. You get 2-3 quest per origin and they are fairly long.
They can turn PvP on, but I guess they wont do it until they can figure a way to balance every power without ruining PvE.
About the login/patcher thing... They have the screwiest system I have ever seen. You need like 3 different passwords just to get to the download part. Real messed up in my opinion.

Rocky, you must enter your BETA board user ID and password to download the installer.
You can register here

This board is different from your public board user id and password.
I had the exact same problem as you.
If you enjoy loot and hunting/camping, then CoH is a game you will not enjoy. The thrust of the game is mission/story driven and what is available in beta is the static content only. Dynamic content will begin once the game is launched so you can expect where you need to go and what you need to change over time. This game eliminates the need to 'figure out' what you want to kill today.
This game will not be enjoyed by those that like to level as fast as possible to get to the top, pure and simple.
The game becomes much more interesting and challenging when you play with a team, rather than solo. That said, it is perfectly viable to solo for most of the hero types and power combinations. Levels 1-10 are pretty easy and fast. Levels 11-14 can feel a little grindy. Level 15+ is where things really get interesting, IMO.
There is no PvP to date but there are rumored plans for it to be added. I would suspect that the introduction of playable villains will be something that is implemented as a high end game mechanism. The levelling in this game is done basically as a hero defeating large numbers of criminal groups. Where you to apply this to villains, that would mean they would have to do missions to kill large numbers of heroes. That just doesn't make sense. I would look for the eventual villains to be a player's ability to take and already levelled Hero and turn him/her into a villain. This is all speculation, however. If you are looking for PvP, CoH should go on your 'check back in a couple months' list.
Bottom line, CoH is an action oriented game that is mission/story driven. No crafting. No true 'money' or loot. Still, it is different enough that it can easily be a nice break from the mold of the existing MMORPGs so long as you don't approach with the thought that you need to plow through the levels.
