Question for fans of Vanguard

I'm having a heated debate with myself if Vanguard is the game for me.  This forum isn't really answering it with the flaming going on.  I'm not interested in bugs, and performance issues at the moment.  I'm not interested in the crafting / diplomacy / or group combo attacks.  What I would like to know is if this game does everything for me like the last few games I tried to play.  Specifically, like the way World of Warcraft gives me levels by barely even playing, and magical items are simple to obtain.   Or the way Everquest 2 has glowing trails that show me where to go next and won't let me enter certain zones until i reach the correct level.  I also didn't like City of Heroes due to the simplicity of the gameplay.  If the game does everything for me, then I think I'll have to pass.  Since Everquest, I have tried many games.  The same as everyone here.  I've played some more than others.  As far as Gameplay is concerened, I like Dungeons and Dragons Online the most.  I thought the dungeons were challenging and liked that the entire group was needed or useful.  However, I felt the setting was a little uninspired and I'm not a fan of instancing.

If I play Vanguard, will everything be handed to me on a silver platter?  Will I be level 10 in an hour or so?  I feel there is more reward if I earn my items and not everyone is created equal.  Can anyone provide me with any insite to the actual gameplay?

And if you are a World of Warcraft flamer, I'm probably not interested.  I'm only playing that game because my brother is paying for it.  It's a good game, but it's just too simplified for me.

Does anyone appriciate the fact that I didn't use any acronyms?  lol....  oops.

Vanguard doesn't hold your hand, no.

I'm not fanboy(only a little) but I'd say that Vanguard is a nice choice for what you are looking for. Its not going to be near impossible to quest and figure things out, but it certainly doesn't hold your hand like WoW does where most anyone can figure it out in a few minutes.

After the 4 day installation, several trips back to to store because your DVD is corrupt, upgrading your processor, ram, gfx card, you load the game up, put it on lowest gfx settings so you can get a nice smooth 3-5FPS (1-2FPS if theres some 1 else on screen, but dont worry wont happen much), your then dumped in a massive (yet very empty) world, theres no reason why your there or any info about the world (there might be some in telephone directory.. erm the manual that coems with the game), there is a guy with a book on his head that will tell you to kill 10 rats, and there your adventure starts.  See you ingame... oh wait no you wont.

I may have exagerated a few points above. The game get a 6/10 from me, its aint ready, it aint finished, we no longer have to speculate as to why Micro$oft dumped the game.... and it run as fast as fatman running neck deep in a pool of thick tar.

But its all relative, I hate it, and for every 1,000,000,000 of me theres at least 1 who will love it.

I bought the game BTW please please dont tell any 1 I did that.

Probably a Commadore 64. I'm just waiting for one of two comments. I have a Core 2 Duo Extreme 4.1921 GHZ with Dual 8800GTX's and 12 GB's of DDR4(Not even released BTW hehe I'm the best) and a 12,000 RPM Raptor HD. Or I have better than recomended! Which in reality means... a Commadore 64.

BTW. In those 4 days you were sulking because you couldn't play VG, why didn't you just click the "Download Client" button, and never drive your car to Best Buy again... it may take 9 hours to D/L, but if you went through all that trouble then I'm sure it would have been quite easier.

If y our expecting to lvl WoW style, then hell no.

It looks like you want a game that shows you everything, so no, VG is all about freedom which is good and bad.

It has some great parts, like being able to do what ever you want, explore, craft alot.

Although, it SUCKS at low levels because finding out where to go can be a pain in the ass, so ask other people,

look it up or run about till you find a place with quest your lvl.

What I do is, go to a town, rape it of quests and things to do, move on to the next. This way

I get to see most of the continent im on, before running off with a flying mount of boat.

In simple terms, unless you want to try a hard, challenging game, that can be played casualy or hardcore then grab it.

    Else, dont.

The majority of people that I have spoken to have said "If you loved EQ, Vanguard is a step in that direction."  In other words, Vanguard is actually hard, unlike WoW, etc.  Personally, I loved EQ, and haven't found a game I like as much since, so I'm hoping to get a buddy key to try out Vanguard before I blow $40 or w/e on the game.  If you happen to pick it up, email your buddy key to me at sofad03@yahoo.com and we can test it out =)

    Lets see...

    I had a 10 minute installation

I had to go to the store 0 times (digital download)

Did not have to upgrade my computer

    Play on High settings

Get 15fps and 10 with people on the screen

Generally the world is filled with a bunch of people (not sure what server you were playing on or maybe your blind?)

Did you bother to read the opening text, or read what the NPC's were saying (much lore there about the world)

There is no "Book" over peoples heads, its a shield and a star

Microsoft did NOT dump the game, M$ wanted it to be vista ONLY and be a vista launch game. Sigil said F*ck you, bought out  of their contract and paired up with SOE.

1 billion people like you, jeez I hope not.

Did you even play this game? or are you blowing smoke out of your rear and just making up exaggerated points just to sound smart.

    To answer your question OP

It will NOT hold your hand, you have to work to gain levels, it is much of the same, but brings so much new to the table.

It improves on alot of ideas from other games.

yes it has bugs, but none really that are game stopping, that I've encountered, some have, I havent.. Call me lucky

over all I haven't felt this enthralled in a MMO since my first. This game will beat any MMO out of the water as far as gameplay, RP setting, and mechanics. It may not get 8mil sub's but then again, you cant really farm gold in this game so there goes the 5 million asian's that play WoW

It shows you exactly where you need to go for a quest.  It puts a dot on your map and guide "arrow" on your compass.

The game is not challenging, I found WoW to have more challenging combat, it's just slow.

I often wonder if these people are playing the same game I am.

  • ZetlerZetler Member Posts: 1

The poster above me obviously never played beyond level 10. The easy kill 10 mobs for 2 silver and fedex quests will be marked on your compass, yes. They're supposed to be easy at early levels, or give you a general feel of the area if you're new. However at higher level and the quests with good rewards provides no such guidance. They just tell you what you have to do, not where or how.

I am playing almost every day since release and i am lvl14 now. I have to admit that i am grinding a bit ;) because i want the wolf at lvl15 for my shaman. Its just nice to have a companion when harvesting in the forest (for phantasy and roleplay reasons)

Those who followed the game for a while know that vanguard didnt have a map from the beginning. And you can do the quests without. They tell you something like: Go south-east and find the... So you can play without map. I use it usually only when traveling, i get lost so easy :P

No glowing trails, and the later quests dont show on map. Combat is slower and i like it. At some point you have to care to fiend two or three others to spend the evening wiht if you want to adventure and do group quests. I cant tell you about the gameplay of vanguard. Nobody can at lvl15 to 20. Buts its obvious that you have to put in time and effort to reach the so called endgame. At 14 i have quested items, some looted and a few crafted i bought at the broker.

Although my english isnt really good i appreciate that you didnt use acronym.

To be perfectly honest the game at the beginning is insanely easy.  Why not though, if you can transition people who are used to simple gameplay and introduce them into a deep and complex world you are more financially viable and able to do all that you want to with the game (aka more subs).  So if you can get past the early levels you'll be treated to some difficult gameplay.  Keep in mind though that if you don't push yourself to try challenging content then the game is a snap.  If you delve deep into a dangerous dungeon with some friends and attempt to kill extremely challenging mobs you'll probably emerge with a feeling of accomplishment and some nifty loot.  Most classes have abilities that in the right situations can save a group, instead of feeling like some schmuck who is exactly like every other tank, or dps or healing class you can feel like your character actually saved the group.  And if you can be so lucky to find a bunch of people who work well together, you can do some pretty amazing things in the game.

As far as being hand held, yes there are red lines on your compass and guys with shields over their heads.  But there are also guys without shields over their heads and quests where you have to actually read what the NPCs are saying to have any clue what to do next.  There are quests that span continents, there are random items you pick up and all it tells you is that someone might find this interesting...that's it.  A lot of the tedium is left out of the game in favor of fun, but that doesn't mean that it's totally simple...just try crafting at some relatively moderate levels.  It's so complex it's awesome, even if the grind for levels is a bit tedious, hopefully that'll change if they ever go with the WOs actually making a difference to your city/outpost, anyway.

You might be lvl 10 in a long play session, but that's intended...50 will take a bit of effort however, and magical items are fairly easy to obtain...but there is a nice range of items with the better ones being harder/more complex to obtain.  You can laugh at me if you want but just questing and dungeon crawling it took me till 19th lvl to get some gloves better than my 1 ac newbie ones..;)  Granted I could have easily found some moderately better ones...  If you liked grouping in DDO you will probably enjoy the grouping in Vanguard, it's really quite good once you get into some higher level dungeons.

The world really is huge too, big enough to frustrate me while I was wandering around for hours looking for quest NPCs...they were fairly logically placed after I found them, but the fact that I was almost frustrated looking made finding them all the sweeter.  There is a tendancy for people to shout and ask for simple directions to things and whatnot but if you can resist for a while there are plenty of 'wow I have no idea where I need to be going' moments.  Though not enough to make you want to log out.  And generally if you are stumped and ask on a channel there will be some solid responses.

And just to add a bit about performance because so many people rag on the game and how they can't manage 10 fps...today after the patch I noticed a nice bump in fps and so I turned my settings to balanced (the game looks really good on balanced, mobs popped from the screen) with a 3.0 P4, 6800GT, and 1 gig of ram and was getting over 30 fps outdoors.  There are lots of tweaks you can do to help, page file, onboard sound disabled, ini tweaks, defragging, drivers etc etc, look into them and mess with stuff, you'd be surprised.

The game has a long way to go to really be 3rd gen, but if they can integrate even more systems into the framework and make the game more complex then I'll be happy..:)

Thanks for all the responses.  I think I'm going to have to give it a shot.  I'm glad you guys mention that it's easier at level 10 but then gets more challenging.  I may not have known that and thought that it was just that style of game.   Hopefully I can get lost. :)

I have been looking forward to trying Vanguard out for a long time, napar, and I would appreciate a buddy key very much.  As I posted above, I think Vanguard may be the first MMORPG I can really enjoy since the original Everquest.  My email is livinglifewell@gmail.com

    Thank you in advance!  =)

So the next time you say ain't ain't a word, try telling them boys at Oxford, cause they ain't heard.

    Dictionay.com had this to say;

ain't      /e?nt/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[eynt] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation

    1. Nonstandard except in some dialects. am not; are not; is not.
    2. Nonstandard. have not; has not; do not; does not; did not.

Dialects do not count within the construct of the English language.

To the OP, thanks for your post.  My only criticism of VG is that magic items flow far too freely towards you.  It is the polar opposite of EQ1.  It is so free flowing that you end up selling dang good items to the vendor for mere coppers.  Everyone has so much loot that there's no demand to buy from other players.  I do love the game, but where loot is concerned it's monty haul for sure.  Now, don't let this discourage you from playing because the game is fun and gets more challenging as you gain levels.

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

Well that's interesting.. because the dots and compass guides are still there for level 20 quests.  And will take you exactly where you need to go.  Perhaps they vanish at level 21..
