I was browsing the V:SoH site today since I havn't done so since launch and I came across a "Player of the Day" section. I noticed you can view the players equipment so I decided looking through this halflings undergarments sounded like lots of fun.

Then I noticed it. In each description of each piece of gear there is a not so subtle message.

"First Discovered by : So-and-so"

My thoughts are this. You fight your way to this mighty beast because you are seeking a nice new shiney.

You succeed and are victorious...You are happy,...you are proud....what you are NOT thinking about is..."This beast has probably been taken down by many other people and I'm not the first to get this sword so there is nothing special about what I had just done...I havn't accomplished anything that someone else has likely accomplished 10 times over."

Though these thoughts might be as right as rain they are still not on your mind. You are under the illusion that you just overcome a great feat and can now claim your rare treasures.

But then you loot the Fiery Avenger Sword (a.k.a. nice new shiney), and what is staring you in the face?

This somehow cheapens the experience for me quite a bit...so much that I might not even bother trying this game which is really sad because I'm a fan of Brad McQuaid's since the begining of EQ. Leaderboards never really bothered me because if I didn't want to deal with that aspect of the game I can simply avoid the whole mess. With this however one way or another you are going to need to progress through the game and that requires equipment. You want to have a sense of accomplishment and not have it lessened by *nyah*nyah* someone else has it...it only states the obvious or the inevitable and serves no real purpose...it's a one-way road satisfaction to speak where the only person who it benefits is the one who is waving his c*ck around. You would like to say "big-whoop-dee-doo" but ...well....ugh...

My question: Is this an ingame 'feature' or is it strictly recorded out of game in databases therefor making it avoidable...despite the fact someone might point out that
they found my Fiery Avenger Sword first. That could get annoying...though unlikely...I hope people won't be obsessed over who finds what first.

I really hate this because it really seems to be favoring the elite gamer....unless you are a lucky casual.

Edit: The only sort of additional information like this that I do enjoy is the "Crafted By"...neat and useful for getting more buisness...sorta...It's not somthing that cheapens an experience because either you were the one who crafted the item or you obviously bought it from another crafter...Like in World of Warcraft and DAoC.

I dunno...your thoughts?

When the server reboots, the discovered by is also reset. So, I wouldn't worry too much about it since there seems to be nightly primetime reboots so far this week.

    What?

Who cares if someone has done it before, it's a MMO with thousands playing so yeah someone has done it before. I find it pretty cool that If I do something noone else on my server has done before I will get recognized for it.

This doesn't really bother me that much...the first discovered by will always be by some elitist, so why even care? Just have fun, and if it's a good item and someone else got it first, who cares?

So what you are saying sir is:

Who cares if someone has done it before...

    -and-

I find it pretty cool that if I do something no one else on my server has done before I will get recognized for it.

....I find your statement to be both contradictory and one that would be said by a l33tzG4m3rz idiot.

I could be wrong, but I think the point that he was trying to make was that he didn't want the fact that somebody else had discovered The Fiery Avenger first shoved in his face every time he looks at it.  It's all well and good to be able to look up and item on a website, or what have you, and see who first discovered it, but he just doesn't want the, in his words, "nyah nyah".

Meh, I'm a known and unabashed Vanguard hater, but this feature is ok by me. The problem comes when, despite Sigil's boasts pre-launch of how strict they were going to be about their naming policy, your fiery avenger was "first discovered by Greenweenie." If you think I'm kidding, I noted with amusement that one of the fastest leveling characters was "Stemcell." GG Sigil.

Yeah I got the same thing.  It's bugged.
