After playing FFXI for 4 months...

When I read an opinion about any MMRPG I like to know what games did the writter played. Its important because I am sure that an opinion based on a single MMRPG experience might be very different from someone with more experience on this genre. I am not saying one is better then the other though. So here is my past MMRPG experience:

played 3 years EQ, played 2 months E&B, 3 months SWG, 1 month Planetside, 3 months DaoC, 4 months AtitD ( a tale in the desert).

I stoped playing EQ then tried all the games I mentioned above and finally I tried FFXI and here is what I think after playing it for 4 months:

At the beginning I was very suspicious about this game because some races looked very childish. I got used to the UI in about 3 hours and now I love it as I love the Tarus too .

Positive points:
- I was never a quester type of player, in FFXI I love questing because there is a point on making quests (you raise fame, items, scrolls, etc ), quests are fun.
- Missions - there is a good story behind it, and it gets more interesting after rank 5
- Tradeskills - never been a tradeskiller type of player, but this game changed that too, I love raising my skills on various tradskills (fishing, cooking, clothing for now)
- Economy - is very balanced, the auction works great (you don't need to be loged to sell items), the items you make on tradeskills have a real porpuse and utility within the game.
- Jobs (classes) balance - this is the most balanced MMRPG I played so far concerning this, hands down
- Combat-Grouping - Its very refreshing the possibility of a group geting bonus experience by chaining mobs as well as the combination between melees to produce more damage with the Renkei system. Its a good change to the old pull-kill-pull-kill. If a group want to get bonus experience and do more damage they need to be more then killing bots and need some coordination and strategy. And as you level higher this is more detrimental.
- I play from Europe and never had lag issues or any other technical problem. I must say this is the most solid MMRPG concerning technical issues.
- No need to get 100 players together on a raid to be able to access higher mobs or special mobs. An alliance with max of 18 players will do fine. Most of times 8-10 players are enough to raid.
- The unlimited combinations between your main and sub job, I think Square hit the nail on this one, it gives freedom and whenever you want you can start a new job (class) without any penalty, its refreshing.
- Unlimited options to gain money from market speculation. IE, you can observe the prices on auction buy cheap and sell elsewhere with profit or you can buy from regional NPCs, etc, there is lots of options to make money , BUT, there isn't too many in order to make a fortune and that's good for a balanced economy.
- When you hit a mob, the effect is really great and gives the feeling that you are really hitting it.

Negative points:
- Lack of mob variety
- The old exp grinding is present on this game too, you need LOTS of time to gain exp on higher lvls
- Travelling times aren't much of a problem after Rank 5, but before it's a pain.
- Unless you choose a Bestmaster, all other jobs aren't effective soloing, so this is a game for groups ONLY.
- Too many timesinks in general. This game isn't easy to progress, that might put away players that cant play much time. IE , if you have one hour session to play and want to get some exp, forget it, unless you already have a group of friends waiting for you to join the group and start killing asap.

Conclusion: I am having fun playing FFXI and that's what matters. If I am going to try EQ2 or WoW? I sure will but that's not because FFXI is a bad game, its because I am a MMRPG addicted and cant resist to try them all.  image

HAVE FUN  image

You are awesome that has to be the best post I have ever seen on this board. You backed all of your opinions with facts and didn't use words like "its dumb, this sucks, great, etc." you presented your idea and your experience with MMORPGs and I just though you would like to know that it was appreciated.

I play this game 2 months now and I still like it very much.

One of the great things I like is that skills and lvl's are different trained, so if you use a sword on one job and swtich over to other job you still have the skills(skills are capped at each lvl) but even with capped you kill easier then with no skills.

Also the Auction House is very good and the AH makes money mean something. All items(except for rare and exp items can be found on auction) this means that you always pay the good price for it since you can view the last 10 sold.

One of the negative things is that you have very little choice in characters and also in they way they look. Also clothing can be better with different collors.

But overall it's a very good balanced game.

Well if you want to make  a new char I suggest you make a Hume, they got all stats pretty good and therefor good for each job.
Each race has it positive and negative stats and some jobs can't be played by certain races.
You can't play a good warrior, palading or drk with a taru.
But thats why taru are super in all mage class jobs.

So if you are sure what job's you want to have then choose a race for it that suits it best.
If you still aren't sure what to play i suggest make a hume and you don't have to make new char ever since you can play all jobs with it.
Keep in mind that for some jobs Humes need to equip items to boost certain stats.
If you wanna play a Beastmaster then make sure to get alot of items with +CHR.

Good luck on your adventures mate!!

After playing this game since the realese I have to say I have had quite enough.  The mindless leveling is now insanly boring. Sometimes it takes up to 2 hours just to find a "Good" party. The game itself is amazing nad for the first month i had it i could not get enough.  I would be at work all day thinking about the game and where i was gonna go when i got home.  But thats all worn off now. Definetly a good and I enjoyed my time but not really worth the money anymore.image

decided I'll just be black mage until 30 at which I change over to dragoon and play until 60, then when I get 60, get the samurai to 30 and voila: It's ready to serve.

Well if you're finding your self feeling the grind at 50 or under... It'd be best for you to avoid trying to get to threw the 60s, even 70s. If you want to blame someone for the grind, go ahead and blame EQ... it's EQs fault image

  • ZhanghiaZhanghia Member UncommonPosts: 1,312
it's not the grind, it's just being a BLM is hard in the early levels because everyone slays you outright and most party members suck 10-16 and every once in a while, someone doesn't know how to party.
