Nights in Vanguard are STUPID, USELESS and UNREASONABLE

WispyWispy Member UncommonPosts: 51

Hello Vanguard programmers.  Sorry, but this is something that can REALLY annoy me about a game.  If you're going to insist on having a day/night cycle in Vanguard, there are ways to do it OTHER than turning the landscape into near total darkness every hour.

Do what WoW does...use an elegant day-for-night lighting filter.  Let your players SEE what the heck they're doing for 1/4 of the game time.

Or do what WoW does...and give the game a 24-hour day/night cycle.  Then at least I'd know what hours to play during, rather than logging on to find myself looking at a black screen.

I know what the fanboys' answer is:  Turn up the gamma settings.  Well, if the game designers INTENDED for players to have to ratchet up their gamma every hour, and play on a pasty gray-on-gray looking screen with virtually no contrast at all, then they are as moronic as the players who consider that a reasonable answer.

And don't try to excuse it with claims of "realism".  "Realism" doesn't mean days an hour long.  "Realism" doesn't mean navigating through pitch blackness by watching for the neon-lit signs of creatures' names over their heads, and poking at the tab key to see where the targeting circle jumps around to.  Remember if you can, when you were playing those night-long sessions of D&D during your formative years, you didn't turn off the lights every time you went down into a dungeon, and read your die rolls by touch.  It's a GAME...make it playable,  Kthxbye.

Im with you 100% man. They have turned what should be a feature of the game into a meaningless hassle.

I have an idea!!  Use the torch that they give you!  I believe the hotkey is K in case you can't find the little icon that says torch.  You wouldn't believe what that little torch can do for you.

BTW the tile of your post including STUPID, USELESS AND UNREASONABLE pretty much guarentees that the Devs will totally ignore you.

Yes, a circle of dim light about three feet in diameter...and still doesn't seem to illuminate whatever it is that pounding on me at the time.

firstly, the night is TOO dark...where is the moon giving off some light?

also with VG's massive system drain igniting a torch for that OTT HDR Dynamic lighting effect for a little circle of light is bloody pointless, perhaps you can get car headlamps :-P would be better so you could see in front of you.

Agreed, all that degree of darkness does is force most people to stop playing and turn up bright and gamma....not fun and ruins any semblance of immersion.

If they feel they HAVE to have a ridiculously short day/night cycle and feel they HAVE to cater to the rabid purists and have night, add a couple moons.

I dont know what da hell you guys are talking about, ive been playing this game since Beta 3, and i have never had any problems with night time. Besides they are trying to go all real with their cycles.

Its night time ffs, not day time mark 2, if it really bothers you adjust the game settings and stop being stupid, useless and unreasonable.

Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve

I think it's a function of the moon cycle in the game.

I was playing last night, and it was night in the game. The moon was full, and the landscape around me was pretty bright.

The night before, however, when it turned to night in the game, it was pitch black.

I'm not sure if I like it or not. It's fun to be wandering in the dark wondering what lies beyond your small circle of light, but at the same time, if that happens a lot it might get annoying. I haven't experienced it enough to make a decision yet.

I think alot has to do with the settings you run it on. I noticed that when I had the graphics turned up night time wasn't so bad.

I noticed that I could see things alot better. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to play with those settings, but I'm about to install a new power supply and a new vid card.

Wispy, since you're addressing the game devs I suggest posting this topic in one of the official forums like Silky Venom or Ten Ton Hammer so there will actually be a chance that they see it.

That said, I agree that the day/night cycle is a little annoying. I was playing mostly in Kojan, where it rained most of the time. With a fast day/night cycle it was rather depressing to see how often it was either dark because of night or overcast and gloomy because of bad virtual weather. I live in Seattle. I get enough of that in real life. Daylight should last a lot longer just for aesthetic reasons if nothing else.

While it was dark, I never felt it was too dark to see what I was doing. I have a very bright, vibrant LCD monitor. It's probably your monitor or settings.

  • AbronzAbronz Member Posts: 126

Seriously you need to buy a new monitor then. Are you still using a CRT? If you do how old is it? No on the CRT, then adjust the settings on your LCD.

I was having issues as well with the darkness then I upgraded from the CRT to a LCD. I reset all the video settings on Vanguard to default and left the settings on the LCD at default and you know what..... I CAN SEE in the dark now with no problems.

I read somewhat that if you have your brightness and contrast settings on your CRT monitor on full brightness all the time then over time your monitor starts to darken. Basically what is happening is that the monitor is slowly burning out.

So try that since most of us have no issues what so ever with the darkness of the game.

    "do what WoW does"

    "do what WoW does"

If they do what WoW does people will find ways to make compairisons with WoW and how it ripped off of way.

i can hear it now... "ZOMG! sigil tottaly just stole the day and night idea from WoW!!!"  ....silly retardes didnt you know...WoW created the moon, sun, starts, and gameplay.  People should make games that WoW hasnt already used, im pretty sure WoW didnt create a game about a stock market! how about they make a game about that next!

Thank God they didn't steal WoW's UI, what would people say if they did something as obvious as that.

Vanguard is junk run by SOE. The guy made Everquest, sold it to SOE, then made Vanguard and is doing it again. He's after a buck. Wait for EA/Mythic and Warhammer. THAT's gonna be the game...although Conan looks interesting.
  • vylovylo Member Posts: 149

Honestly, no clue what you guys are talking about.  I can see fine at night.  Maybe something with the way i have my video settings.

I hated the 24 hour day cycle in WoW.  If you played at the same time of day constantly, you never saw any real variety in the scenery, and you couldn't have any quests/events that only pertained to a certain time of day (anyone remember kithicor?)

Man you guys would have gone crazy as a human race in EQ.  Even after they adjust it, you could barely see infront of you without a light source.  Then again the lightsources seemed to be much more potent then the all but impotent torch they give you in VG.

  • mbbladembblade Member Posts: 747

well yea thats where i would agree, have a day cycle of an hour is stupid. So when you play for 8 hours then you went though 8 days in game! The cycle should be much longer, i would say 3 to 4 hours to be a day-night cycle if they want it that way. Haveing a real time cycle is useless as well, if your gonna do that then there is no need for ther to be night at all. If they want the day to go into night it has to be within the play time.

So many haters ripping on vanguard for copying WoW, now we're getting posts asking to copy WoW.  It never ends, lol.

Dude, tone it down... the title makes you look like a Loon...

That said, I agree it's too dark at night... better lighting would help, like more torches, guards with torches or larger lighting radius'.

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

    In fact, forget the SWG!!!!

I am not seeing the nighttime issue. So i don’t know what to tell you guys, it does get dark...but not as dark for me as what you guys are talking about, but my gamma and color or controlled with adobe gamma, as I use it for digital art allot.

The more of this forum I read the more I laugh at SOE and Vanguard.  Funny thing is my friend was telling me to get Vanguard, glad I was like "ha, its SOE... NO..."

Uh... I've played since Beta 3 and I have never had any problems with the night...

In fact, my girlfriend just started playing not long ago and she isn't even throwing a fuss over the night time.
