It depends on what you are looking for in a game.
Do you want player vs. player or player vs. environment?
Do you want something really challenging that takes a lot of prior thought, or something where you just charge in?
Do you like quests, or just killing things, or crafting?
Do you think that you will only play when your friend is on, or do you think you'll spend a lot of time alone?
There are all sorts of games, and some do different things better than others. There are a lot of knowledgable people on here, but it will help to get some idea of what you like to do.
lol, in a Non-offensive way, Grammar freak.
And as tamer6 said WoW is a great game to start off with if your a new mmo'er. If your a hardcore one i'd recommend VG for it's vast world.Maybe even City of Heros it has great role-playing but it's a grind-fest (Don't worry the grinding only gets annoying after about 5 month's of game-play).

Games not to waste your time and money on are as follows.....
SWG
Vangaurd
The Matrix is a disaster
Roma Victor
anything that has the word SOE anywhere near it.
Nothing german made like neocon or mankind.
RF online is a joke as well as Dark and light. (cruel jokes at that)
Both Ever Quests are grind fests and reqyuire ALOT of time to play.
Archlord is also a joke.
Games that are definatly finished and I have had positive expewriences with are as follows.
CoH one of the best MMOs but gets old after 6+ months of play depending.
D&D online is very nice but unfortunatly VERY tiny. Maybe 2 months worth of playing time and you run out of game.
Anarchy online is fun and free.
Guild wars is fun and free but the community is full of little kids.
With the 4 obove you realy cant go wrong. They are nicly polished games that are fun.
Hope this helps. Just dont get ripped off by SOE or some other farse.

A MMORPG where your actions actually influence the game world.
A huge Sandbox, where you dont have to grind to see the "endgame content". (Because there is no such thing as "endgame")
City of Heroes/ Villians is a great one to start playing. It's action packed, and the character customization is UNBEATABLE. In fact, I've yet to run across ANY game that has anything close to what CoH/V has to offer as far as customization. Not only can you come up with millions of different costumes, you also get a variety of powers to select from.
I've found the community to be one of the most friendly communities I've been a part of. I have been tricked a couple of times by letting someone teleport me, only to find my self in the middle of a mob that is about 5 levels higher than myself.
The game also offers rewards to those that stick with the game. The longer you are a member of the game, the better "prizes" you get.
The learning curve is short also.
All in all, one of the best MMORPG's I've ever played. I actually wish other creators could match the character customization that CoH/V has. (HINT, HINT HINT, ALL YOU GAME DEVELOPERS!!!)
I suggest vanguard... Its really new so youll be among other new players. The quests are complex so you wont all know whats going on, its great for when you have friends to discuss and joke about with (although its tough on single players especially if they like linear mmorpgs). Theres lots of grouping... Theres tons to do besides adventuring, so if one of you wants to play while the others arent logged on they can do diplomacy or crafting which is very fun but doesnt effect the adventuring stuff much.
But most of all, vanguard has FELLOWSHIPS, which is why my friend and I chose to play it together. Fellowships is a special type of group that is perminant (like guilds), those in a fellowship share adventuring experience even if one of the members are not logged in, or if one of the members are not with the group. That way you dont have to worry about one friend falling behind because he is busy with this or that! I think its a pretty amazing idea, and it is what ended up selling VG to me.
.. Fellowships dont work atm though, the devs have the fellowship feature disabled... But thats no biggie, assuming you'll be playing the chosen game with your friends for a good while, fellowships will be very helpful for you guys once it is glitch free and re-enabled, which will hopefully be within a week although dont quote me on that, I dont know when the ETA on its fix is.
If you dont want to go with vanguard, you should really consider another mmo that has things to do besides leveling up... Otherwise you and your friends will find themselves at different levels and you wont even want to play together anymore. Games like Guild Wars would be okay though, because Guild Wars' level cap is reached before you finish even 4% of the coop missions... So you wont be worrying about who is what level, ect.
