Is the Collector's Edition worth it?

bonobotheorybonobotheory Member UncommonPosts: 1,007
I've decided to get the game, but I'm not sure if I'm going to get the Collector's Edition or just the normal box. Mostly, I want the Collector's Edition for the Buddy Keys - I got a key on this forum, and there are still a lot of requests. But the extra 40 bucks is a lot to spend on gifts for complete strangers. I love Keith Parkinson's art, so I'm interested in the art book, but not if it's just a crappy booklet thrown in as an afterthought. How good are the in-game items? I hear a lot of complaints about the cloaks, so I'm not sure if those are added value. Opinions?

The box is a solid chest like device of very good quality, and looks nice. Inside the box it's lined with Suede.

The art book is about as large lengthwise as the box itself, and is of very high quality. It contains artwork along with some lore, and a dedication to the artist who died of cancer before the project was finished.

You get a cloth map that I'm not impressed with. The ink is kind of faded, and it's not as detailed as the the paper map that is included in the box (which is highly detailed).

It comes with a nice looking instruction manual and CD case.

Overall I think it's the nicest collectors edition, in terms of quality, that I've ever seen. But then I've never payed $90 for one either. Usually it's $60.

The ingame cloaks are nice, but I don't know if they will become outdated as one levels. Other than that I wouldn't buy this collectors edition just for the ingame items.

the collectors edition does pay for itself, however. It also come with an extra 3 free months of gameplay, at $15 per month thats a $45 value right there

NO it doesnt come with 3 months gameplay. It comes with 3 months sub to vanguard players, something entirely different!

Yes i bought the collectors edition and in my opinion its worth it (£32.99 from amazon.co.uk) the artbook is nice, the cloth map is a bit like a teatowel, soundtrack cd is ok and ingame cloak is cool when just starting out. So yes imo its worth it. Not sure its worth $90 though

I understood that to be 3 months of Station Players access, which is worth just a few bucks a month.  When I first read the description of the CE, i thought it was 3 months of game subscription too, but I saw a review on Amazon from a disappointed player, and it got me to read the description more carefully.

Yanik, you guys get a hell of a deal. £33 works out to about $65, which I'd pay without hesitation. I have no idea why Amazon UK knocks 27% off the price, but Amazon US doesn't.  Bastards.

IF Vanguard is worth it, then yes the collector edition is worth it.  I think Anarchy or Copeland or someone else make an exhaustive post explaining it, the edition is very nice IMO.

IF Vanguard is not worth it, then there are no reasons to consider the collector edition either.

True enough - I spent a couple of weeks in Brighton last year, and the prices were insane. If something costs $100 here, it costs £100 there (unless it's a house, in which case I think someone just writes down the largest number they can think of).

The ingame items are:  either a wand that shoots off fireworks or some horse-shoes that will allow a bit faster sprint I think for your minimal mount.  The good part is you decide if you want the wand or shoes.

The other ingame item is (1) of (3) PRE-chosen items.  Stupid decision by Sigil & SOE.  Each CE comes with a code for an ingame card that will allow an ingame item to aide a little in:  Adventure, Crafting, or Diplomacy.  However, the player/customer doesn't get to decide which she/he wants.  Sigil & SOE randomized & pre-chosen that for us.  Good concept idea, bad execution by Sigil & SOE.

I'm seriously thinking about returning my (2) CEs I pre-ordered just because I feel tricked by the not being able to chose which ingame card I wanted.  I bought (2) however because I eventually wanted to play (2) accounts, (1) having the Crafting & the other having Diplomacy.

The regular Vanguard versions I'm seeing on the shelves in my city give the player an ingame scroll for sprinting a bit longer anyways.  The only CE item that might be interesting to keep is the late great Keith Parkinson's artwork book.  But, as well known as Keith parkinson is Vanguard wont be the only way of collecting his artwork.

I'm sure Vanguard will be getting better in time, but the Sigil & SOE rushing it seems to have harmed it definitely.  Not sure anyways if my machine would've played it at an acceptable rate anyways:

Athlon 2500 ... 1G dual-channel PC3200 ... NVidia 5700 Ultra ... Raptor HD raided ... & I'm not willing to upgrade to a beefier system just yet, let alone just for an unfinished rushed game.  Maybe in a few months when Sigil & SOE get Vanguard more stable.

Till then, to those playing in Telon, "Goodluck in EQ3".

No it adds nothing to your gameplay, it's only for people who want the crappy art pictures and like to waste money :P
