A few questions before I get into Vanguard:
1. Anyone familiar enough with Diplomacy have an opinion on whether it may hold the interest of a former SWG Player City Mayor?
2. Will player housing be attainable by the casual-player (have heard about high costs, etc. grinding comes to mind :-( )
3. Can you make clothes and of various styles and colors (required for my wife to play :-) ).
if you can answer any/all my questions I would greatly appreciated it!
Thanks in advance.

2. Player housing will be obtainable by anyone who wants it to put out the effort to get it.
3. You can be a tailor. You can make normal clothes. You can make diplomatic clothes. And you can make Crafting clothes. Diplomatic and Crafting clothes are important because they boost the skills of those professions, much like gear for adventurers.
You can make various styles and colors, but I don't know to what extent yet because I'm a low level outfitter.
As for the clothes if I remember correctly, it is possible to purchase coloring add'ons from exotic vendors to add to certain products, so coloring should be possible (not my specialty though).
I can't speak for the housing though but from what I have understood it will be challenging but in no way unattainable. As for me, I find in no way this game too difficult and I have fun ... that's all I ask
GAHHHh I typed a super long reply then hit the back button on accident... Grrrr... MMORPG.com has a very fancy post editor, but its fanciness prevents it from saving inputed data I think.
Oh well... Heres what I think in a nutshell:
~ Diplomacy is really fun, very immersive stories, great mini-game
~ Diplomats arent like politicians from SWG at all
~ VG housing isnt as elaborate as the SWG player cities yet, I dont think
~ Crafting has a long grind, a sorta fun solitaire mini game, you dont have to throw money at crafting to level up in it (I was a tailor in SWG too!)
~ All players can persue each gameplay sphere seperately... The spheres are:
Adventuring (you choose from the combat classes)
Harvesting (lumberjacking, mining, quarrying, that one that you cut fields of wheat down ect with, or some other one to choose from)
Diplomacy
Crafting (blacksmithing, outfitting, or that one that builds houses and boats... I think each have special areas too, like outfitting specializes in tailoring, outfitting, or leatherworking?)
So this means that you wont really be 'choosing to be a diplomat'... All players can be a diplomat regardless of their adventuring or crafting level. So yeah you can do all the diplomacy stuff without focusing on any other sphere, but most players are probably dabbling in a bit of everything. I dunno if this matters to you, but being a SWG refugee myself I've never really been happy how any other mmorpgs class system worked. I probably would be happier of only players who choose to be a diplomat could be a diplomat, ect... But that is sorta limiting the content people can enjoy, so I guess its cool that they didnt do it like that.

I'm so on the fence about this game I seem to find myself over-researching it....but It IS an investment ($ and time) so I need to be sure and I need to be sure my wife will play too
I guess the thing that's worrying me is the level-based system vs. skill-based (SWG). I have played level-based types of games and always felt my only purpose was to grind to get to the next level, get the next weapon, go to the new area with harder MOBs to level more, etc. I realize there will be a grind in every MMO but would prefer to minimize it or grind in such a way that it's actually fun.
The 2nd thing I'm worried about is our computer specs that we will be playing this on. I can't afford to upgrade them right now (especially if I buy 2 copies of the game). I am willing to turn down settings (not a graphics whore) but not to the point that it loses realism/all it's eye candy.
Wife's Computer:
Pentium D 3.0 GHz
1GB DDR
Geforce 6600GT 128MB
My laptop:
Pentium-M 1.73 GHz (essentially equivalent of 3.2 GHz in P4 language)
1GB DDR2
ATI Mobility Radeon X700 128MB
Any commments on these?
Thanks again in advance.
PS Any buddy key(s) floating around out there that someone might not mind parting with?
Housing is available to everyone that puts in the effort. Where do you need to put in effort for a house?
1. Find an empty plot
2. Pay the plot cost (from 1g to 10g, my plot cost 2.5g)
3. Pay the upkeep (my plot costs 5 silver a week, I think I heard the 10g ones cost either 10 or 20 silver a week)
4. Get the resources to build your house (wood beams, mortar, etc) and put them in.
5. Click complete construction!
There you now have a house!
As far as skill based system, the harvesting and diplomacy are both skill based so there's a little bit of merging there.
To test out your computer specs, I recommend checking out www.srtest.com and picking "vanguard" from the dropdown menu.
Hope to see you in the game!

You'd do a lot with your wife's computer to upgrade to 2 gigs. But to upgrade your laptop to 2 gigs may not be possible, and if it is you'd need to take it to a computer guy to have it installed.
My system is a notch above your wife's computer with AMD 3000+, Radeon X800 256MB, and 2gigs of RAM. I get good FPS in most situations on the balanced setting, and the game looks great.
Adventuring is a mix of skill and level based.
Your level just increases your attributes and increases the cap of how high you can raise your skills.
Your skills still have to be raised through actually doing stuff, so if you switch from a shortsword to a two handed hammer you'll have to start from scratch to get that skill up.
Crafting is similar. There are no attributes for crafting, but it is entirely dependant on skills like reasoning, finese, toolworking, etc. These are raised through performing certain actions, up to a certain point determined by your crafting level.
Different skills are for different types of tasks, so if you spend all your time forging metal armor then you'll find you're very poor at forging metal weapons until you take the time to get the required skills up.
Diplomacy is all skill based. You have one skill - Diplomacy. But there's also something called pressence which determines your influence with particular types of NPCs; and this has to be raised like a skill through action, or enhanced by the clothes you wear.
Yeah, the leveling feels pretty much like other non-pre-CU-SWG games...
No mmorpgs out now really come close to SWGs class customization... I dont know why. Why oh why do mmorpgs force people into a single class? Is it really that difficult to balance multi-class games? If so then why are there so many single player games that let you customize?

Single player games have to be balanced too...

Im thinking of getting into it but I onl really have time to either Adventure of do Diplomacy. So can I run up Diplomacy and still get cash to buy new equipment? or will I need to Adventure to get cash?
