Worth starting?

I'm looking at trying DAoC for both my wife & myself.  We are both a little disappointed with WoW, which we've played (on & off) since day 1.  I don't mind EQ, but she doesn't seem to like it much.

I played DAoC for about 60 days after it was released, but went back to EQ because that is what I was familiar with & I didn't want to leave it.  Now, DAoC looks as if it would be a blast!  However, there seems to be a lot of concern on population levels.

Is it worth giving it a try?  If not, I'll play WoW until Age of Conan is released

Since you'll be playing with another person you can have a lot of fun with DAoC. The game does have its problems sometimes with new players as you absolutely have to be proactive when it comes to finding people to play with. There are a lot of posts in these forums about how its a lonely enterprise trying to level, but those people must have sat back and waited for someone else to do all the work for them. On the classic cluster there's always people playing in rvr zones at every single level. I even had fun running around with a lvl 4 acolyte in Demon's Breach last night. I quit a while back and recently came back on a different realm under classic rules set. It took maybe 2 days of playing there before I got an invite into a decent guild and the action has been great. I've played since it released and the game is not the same. Much better now imo but you have to be willing to use the tools available to get what you need.

If you do decide to play, pick a good duo of classes that work together well. Sorcerer's and Theurgists are a great combo. Mentalist and a Bainshee is another really good one. The great thing about the game is that there are so many character classes/spec lines and so many different situations that arise, there are always new things to try out.

I also like that there are different servers with different rule sets to try.  I enjoy the ToA servers - play "Classic" sometimes and have also explored gaheris for PVE and find it a fun alternative as well.

It's absolutely worth giving a try.  My husband and I played on Gaheris for over a year.  Not a highly populated server, but great people there and a great game all around.  DAOC has really been one of my favorite gaming experiences.  Much luck!

Does DAOC work with Windows Vista yet by chance? I was semi thinking of coming back to see what the game is like now but from what I read it currently does not work with windows vista.

To OP: It's rather hard to get into but it's well worth it in the long run.  Very fun game.

But its not terribly friendly to laptop computers....  as the tech support told me... "no way they could support all the customized laptop drivers...so you roll the dice and take your chances"

I have some blue screen issues in heavy RVR on my older Dell XPS inspiron computer...... (and its Radeon 9800 mobility graphics card)

Daoc HANDS DOWN over WoW. Especially if you can play with your wife and don't have to solo. Just make sure to take 2 class that complete each other, and you'll tear through the leveling process up to 50. After that, you'll be able to enjoy the "best" end game of the whole MMO industry right now.

About population: Just go on the classic servers. There ain't no population problems there, and you'll also avoid the crappy TOA expansion. The classic server is how DAOC should always been.

What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...

Up until now the responses have been positive, though I'd like to put another opinion into play: it's not worth getting involved in DAOC at this point. The game is dying, and on top of that your ascent to rvr will be a tough tough grind. Due to the age of Daoc Realm vs. Realm action is at this point fought by pimped out characters that have all completed their gear template...I say pick another (newer) game where you are at a similar level as the other players.

Are you even playing the game? last night when I logged of the classic us cluster there were over 2000 players on that cluster alone, not as crowded as 4 years ago, but still alot of fun. AND no not everyone is maxed out, there are tons of lowlevel players still around and those of us that got lvl 50 templated still roll new chars all the time.

No, I don't play DAoC anymore.  I didn't say that no one plays the game anymore, but if the OP wants to play an MMO with his wife I wouldn't recommend Dark Age unless both of them are pretty hardcore when it comes to dedication of time to a game. DAoC is about PvP and not RvR and with the steep learning curve of DAoC and the skills needed to assemble the correct template (and you need a good template for successful rvr'ing), this game just does not spring to my mind when thinking of a "playing together with my spouse" kind of game.

Give it a try!  Besides it will add a couple to the numbers!

I found Gaheris to be a very friendly server - will likely go back there... Found Gareth and the "classic's servers over rated.  I think the best advice I've seen is get out  of the starter guild and find a good guild whichever server.
