Personally, I don't think there should be a 40k MMO just yet for two reasons.
1) Focus on WAR: The developers should stick to Age of Reckoning. I want WAR to live up to its potential and for that to happen the devs need to be worrying about updating it and not developing a new game.
2) Takes away from player base- If there was a 40k MMO, it's very possible that it would take the player base away from WAR. Reverting back to the earlier comment on the devs focusing on WAR, yes it could be made by another company but then we'd have 2 MMOs instead of one very likely WoW contender. By taking some of the player base off of WAR, neither game would have a shot at competing with WoW. And we all want a WoW killer, don't we?
See, I'm not so sure that it would definitely have to be an either-or situation if both a Warhammer Fantasy and a Warhammer 40K MMO were coming out, so long as one was an MMORPG and the other was a MMOFPS. If you're offering two uniquely distinct universes and different styles of gameplay to go along with them, you have the potential to draw people to both games and to bring players to the Warhammer liscense who may not be interested in another fantasy MMORPG but like online shooters. Plus, if they got Relic to develop it, Mythic wouldn't have to divert any resources from their focus on WAR.
I do see your point, and I think that's largely the reason why GW has been so tight-lipped about a possible 40K MMO: because they don't want to steal any of WAR's thunder.

I would very much like to see a 40k mmorpg. Playing a Howling Banshee would be so cool! Just imagine screaming in a SM's face wile driving your power sword in his chest.
The classes could be worked out by giving each faction two starting classes (a fighter and a caster) that can be "Kustomized" as you advance through the game.
For a Space Marine it would look something like this:
scout > space marine (shooty or assaulty) > SM sargeant (terminator option) > chaplain/force commander
It would be the same for Eldar and their Aspect Warriors/Farseers: you would start the game as a Guardian/Warlock and depending on how you develop your skills, you could become a Banshee, Fire Dragon, Bonesinger etc.
The 'nids could be put in the game as creeps that would start random raids on player strongholds. Jus imagine: youre walking around doin' nothing and then an alarm sounds 'Tyranid fleet approaching! ETA 30 minutes!'
I know this is pure daydreaming, but man... I sure wish it would hapen. A 40k mmo would be a great thing... rpg or fps.
