Performance culprit... client code?

PorvenPorven Member UncommonPosts: 30
I'm starting to think the performance problems people are seeing have almost as much to do with the Vanguard client's networking code as they do with the user's computer setup and here's why I think that.

My setup:

E6600 Dual Core overclocked to 3GHz

NVIDIA 8800GTX

2GB Ballistix DDR2 1000 (PC2-8000) overclocked

OS and VG installed on same 7200RPM SATA 2 Hard Drive

DSL connection with no other processes or traffic hogging bandwidth during play

Windows XP Pro

While I generally get good performance with max details on, I still often get these HUGE lag spikes especially in the cities.  Changing to high performance and low res settings does not help this.  The game just freezes for several seconds sometimes when I try to move or spin my view around. This doesn't have anything to do with my configuration at all.  If it does then God help us all.

I doubt most of us will see Vanguard running smoothly at any resolution until Sigil gets their client code fixed.

    hmmm... your ideas intrigue me.

Well, my computer is nothing near yours:

    2.66 p4 northwood

    1gb 3200/400

    6600 nvidia 256

But the thing is, the game runs badly but do not strain either the CPU or GPU or Harddive.

When I start eq2 I can hear my GPU fan speeding up as well as the CPU one, I can hear and notice the harddrive going into overdrive mode.

Vanguard do not seem to even try to utilize any of the limited resources that are there.

    Weird indeed.

As far as I can tell, Vanguard actually has pretty good latency code.  I have a terrible system(geforce 6200, 1.25 gigs of ram, p4 2.8ghz)  and play at min everything, but what makes me inclined to believe it's not network related is the fact that I play on 24k dialup and for the most part play without a hitch.

To be honest the only times I notice major spikes in ping is at the exchange broker, when searching.  I don't notice any lagging on turning/moving in towns that i wouldn't immediatly attribute to my poor system

From the sound of it, the client simply isn't using your high end systems as well as it should be, and that is definetly something that needs to be addressed...but it doesn't look to me as if we can attribute it to poor network code, as I was impressed that I could play at all.

Sounds like the whole hitching issue from beta.

At one point on the Performance boards, a developer told us to add this:

    bUseShaderCaching=1

To our vgclient.ini file, right beneath:

    [General]

It was also said that this was a 'temporary fix' and it would be patched to the client. But I still hitched regardless of my performance settings at release, so I added that back to my .ini file, and viola I play smoothly despite fluctuating FPS or network latency.

You'll still hitch for awhile, but after 20 mins or so you should notice a drastic increase in performance if that's the problem you're having...at least I did.

Same here. That cache tweak did wonders to me. Also there was some other cache size tweak in there. Just can't remember what it was.

Their code is just flat bad at this point, it's laggy and slow. My biggest beef with vanguard is the performance in all honesty, it doesn't look significantly better than everquest2 at anything less than high performance and at balanced it requires a computer you could run everything maxed in oblivion, eq2, hl2, d3, or gothic3.

My system isn't as good as yours, you've got about a year/year and a half more current than I do... but it runs all those other games at >20fps no problem with everything pegged to the max regardless of situation. Vanguard randomly freezes a second here and there. It's video related make no mistake... but you're right, its just bad code on the client.

:) pretty much exactly the same setup I've got even down to the hard drive.

And I get the same issue, runs smoothly 50-80FPS most of the time, then bang screen sticky huge lag, followed by running smooth again, notice it most when going across zones, also when I log in I notice the graphics seem to load in in stages?

In short : they managed to be as stupid as possible about the Unreal license.

I get the same problems as you on high and highest. My view is that high and highest are for 4gb memory. It seems to me that using high detailed textures takes up alot of memory. As all the memory is used it has to load up everything straight from the hard drive. This is what causes the hitching.

I'm playing on balance until its ever fixed by sigil or i get more memory. Also you need vista with 4gb as xp cant use more than 2gb of ram ive heard.

    I'm running:

AMD 64 3700+ (San Diego) (Air OC at 2.6GHz)

    XFX 6800GT 256mb

4gb (4x1gb) OCZ Titanium Ultra Low Timings

    7200RPM 320gig WD Sata

    WIndows XP Professional 32bit

    5000/640 DSL Line

I run the game perfectly fine, never had any lag problems at all..  the only frustrating things that happen from time to time is when monsters go invisible, but seeing as how everyone else in the group see's it as invisible shows its client side on that.    Other then that, the game is beautiful, runs great..  and I don't get any lag problems.

So, going with what I have been reading, perhaps it is memory..  windows only reads it around 3.2gigs or so due to loading for external/interal PCI devices, but it still runs beautifully.

No performance problems at all?  What about in towns or in groups?  You've honestly had zero lag problems at all?
