Is UO worth coming back to?

This game was made before my time but people are calling it one of the best MMOs of all time.

After all the new high tech MMO's (WoW, GW, VG, etc.) and RPGs (Oblivion) with all the quests and 3D graphics and gameplay, what makes UO still 1 of the most popular MMOs out there? And would a mature 16 year old like it?

What made UO so special to me :-

    • Total and utter freedom. With respect to games like Vangard SoH, nothing I have played since UO has compared to the free world of Britannia. From the very second you enter the world in an underground cellar, you are given the choice of either doing a short quest, or doing whatever you wish.
    • Never forced. Since there were no real quests as such (pre-Samurai Empire) you were never told where to go. I guess this blends into the freedom point, but it does stand alone as it's something so many are used to in MMOs now. Anyone who is introduced to UO after starting in WoW will either a) quit immediately b) go to the UO section of this site and proceed to troll as much as possible.
    • Skills skills skills. No levelling, no 'I'm 25 levels above you, I could kill you in a heartbeat'. This was even more evident before Age of Shadows came out, when it really was down to the player's reflexes and knowledge of the game. Never gear. Also, let's not forget he ability to become a hybrid. A quick look at the Stratics UO page will show you many 'classes' which people can adapt their character to. If you were a grandmaster (skill at 100) mage with 100 magery and 100 evaluate intelligence, you could easily add something like swordsmanship.  The only game that comes to mind nowadays which is even remotely close to this is DDO.
    • Factions! I have never tried RvR, but I can only imagine this is the UO equivalent. You joined a faction and had a base. The long and short of it was to defend and steal sigils (little orbs) from your opposing factions.
    • No button mashing. If you were a warrior of somekind (fencer/swordman/etc), you had no uber buttons to press half a million times. If I remember correctly, a swordsman would only have 2-3 "special attacks".
    • Housing. My villa outside the Minax keep in Fellucca was my pride and joy. You had the ability to drop any movable game object and use it as decoration.
    • Very good lore. There's no point writing the whole lore behind UO here, but it's got a great backstory - so good in fact it encompasses why there are multiple worlds (servers). I don't know another MMOG which does that.

Well that's alI can think of for now.

    No longer visiting MMORPG.com.

I remember when Everquest launched I thought it was more comparable to Diablo than UO.  UO isn't nearly as structured and it never made you feel like to had to level up.   I also liked the skill-based system that allowed for malleable characters over EQ's fixed class system.

UO is so different to all other mmorpgs. I keep going back to it, which I hate btw. I have yet to find another like it with its skill system rather than classes. Crafting system, custom housing. It's just.. whoa. And they are now revamping the client to update all the graphics which will being a hell of a lot of new people into the world.
There are tons of free shards out there for uo. http://connectuo.com is a nice topsite for them. Custom built player world with 400 players online at any one time on some.

Bah I hate UO so much becuase it's so addictive compared to others, and yet I love it so much compared to others.

To me, I would rather play WoW than go back to todays UO. But that's just bcause I hate EA and what they did to MY game.

No, it's not really worth going back to presently, maybe after the expansion... but in honesty there are still going to be a lot of core game play problems even then.

There is bound to be a free trial when the expansion hits.  I would wait for that.
