Too bad they are a private company because they are going to be swimming in money soon. Makes me have hope with the success of this game that a truly great nex gen AC game may unfold released as polished as this game is. One can dream
I have been in testing since August -- back in Alpha. The game has grown and evolved beautifully and it gets better all the time. This is NOT the game for everyone. "Hardcore" players will probably not find much to their liking. This is a game to relax and enjoy the ride. It is also very stable with relatively few bugs. It will have a very smooth launch. Unlike other games who released too early, LOTRO will be ready on April 24. All that needs to be done after that is something that Turbine already knows how to do -- add regular content and have an evolving storyline. They should be able to handle that easily.
I bet Everquest II players will love this game and the hardcore WOW raiders will hate it.
The only things i can think about that EQ II players will miss is a better crafting system and some more dungeons.

From what I have experienced, EQ2 players and probably WoW players (non-raiders) will like this game.
Older gamers (but not "hardcore" ones) will like this game -- and fans (but not fanatics) of LoTR will also like it.
It's smooth, it plays well, the 'basic" game as it stands now will serve as a good platform upon which to build and add to.

Man, I wanted to buy Turbine stock back when AC launched. I know your pain.
