I read the reviews at mmorpg.com and like many other people was enticed by the idea of a good community. Which I found. Ive played my fair share of games, and my biggest complaint with all of them has been being surrounded by people that were rude, ignorant, and at times cruel. The community is Ryzom has been wonderful to me, however, I found the game disappointing.
I feel as though the newbie island promised a different game than the one I found on the mainland. I had a blast on the island, flying through levels. I was excited to kill the bosses and the world was defiantly diverse enough to make exploring fun.
When I hit the mainland, it was almost painful to play. I discovered quickly that the game revolved around grinding. The quests gave no real sense of fulfillment or reward. It was impossible to explore without multiple deaths. The mobs did not make sense to me, as in a low level area contained high level mobs so close together. And I honestly could not see the point in attaining level 250. Pvp is non-existent and the few ring scenarios were just a zerg fest. The story line that I enjoyed so much on the starter island completely disappeared.
I decided to call it quits on this game. There are elements to this game that I think are fantastic, and I enjoyed the time that I played. However, the fun factor quickly dissipated. Does anyone else feel this way? That the island gave a completely different impression of the game?

Ryzom, on the mainland, is more about grouping for my part, finding a bunch of new friends, find a common level and go hunt something for example, also it's fun attending the events that pop up from time to time, or going out digging for some rare mats for a fancy set of armour. I also love sneaking about with my lowlevel alts, trying to find a safe path through dangerous areas of agressive mobs.
Bah, I wasn't really gonna post any much, I just cant help it *twitches*... anyhow I wish you the best of luck, and have you read MadSam/acridiels letter? it might give you some insight ^^
*hugs from lil me*
*Brain down for upgrade, don't try to understand my logic, I don't...*
Some things you dislike are enjoyed by the regular player of Ryzom and that's why Ryzom is appart in the MMORPG market.
For instance, it's hard (not impossible) to explore and that's a strong feature of Ryzom. It's challenging.
It gives a feeling of accomplishment. But not everyplayers like this. If you don't like that, Ryzom is simply not for you. You will probably find what you want in games likes EQ2 or SWG.
Hi there dissapointed one ,
please read this.
I think it´ll help you.

I just started playing ryzom 2 days ago and have felt pretty good about it so far. Also remember that "newbie island" is a rather newer addition to ryzom in general, so some of the other things that you are comparing it to may very well be older elements, the game has been out for 2 years i believe now. I look at it this way....
Ryzom is one of the few MMORPG's to not only consistantly improve, but add new innovations to the genre as a whole. Not many RPG's can boast an IMPROVED mmorpg.com review score today than they had at launch ...and after 2 years that says a lot for a game IMO. I think the newbie isle is more of a sign of whats to come and the increased quality of newer content as opposed to older "launch" content also. Ryzom ring also is the first real attempt by ANY company that i know of to allow player created content to be accessable in game and is something that i look forward to exploring more of in the future.
I havent really seen that its as much of a "grindfest" as most other MMORPG's around...and certainly isnt as much of one as many rpg's made by korean companies and such. But i do agree that i would like to see more missions in game. Then again i think the design team seems to really make up for this by offering some of the best run events and interactive content that i have found yet.
playing eq2 and two worlds
Sadly i agree with the OP.
RoS, the starter island, is a small masterpiece. But as for the mainland :
Instead of focusing on the lore, encyclopedia, interesting live events, new lands, new skill trees, player housing, etc...
Nevrax decided to focus on a dodgy pvp system and the ring.
Some like it obviously, but i and many others miss the lack of serious content since launch in 2004.

totaly agree with you there m8
Thats what has me quit the game, couldnt handle the grinding anymore
community is the best i ever met , makes up for the bad things big time.
but at the end , no content killed it for me.
in any game, if it's not fun in the first 10min, its not worth my time.... i was in the alpha for ryzom and have been following it, but the game does not motivate me to get off the noobie spot=)
i cant really hate on ryzom, but i could not find it fun enuff for me to play any further...
I bought Ryzom recently. I bought it mainly because of the community within.
I'm currently beta-testing a game that's soon to be released and I've played almost all of the major MMORPGs to-date. The game I'm testing is full of people who berate others or complain day in and day out over chat channels. Coming into Ryzom, it was a breath of fresh air.
When I See Ryzom, I see a work-in-progress that's better than some fully released games that have put out more than one expansion. I see a community of adult(or adult-like) players and that attracts me for now. I see helpful individuals all over; sometimes even when you don't ask for the help.
Hopefully, this type of community lasts throughout Ryzom's rebirth under Gameforge.
/em raises glass
/em says 'Here's to future Ryzom content!'
I love this game, but I think there should be some more content too. (I dont want a content driven game like wow, just a bit more)
And I know the feeling some games just take you in or dont. I had it too, and then I think what some say about ryzom 'ok maybe it is not my game'.
Still for me, it is still one of the best games out there.
but imho the game is nothing about grinding
Yeah, I was surprised on how much it differed from Island to Mainland. I really loved the Island but when I zoned into mainland, for the 1st week, I had trouble meeting people because of the "ghost town feel" in Zora. I was about to quit the game for good and then a guild picked me up. They gave me catalyst crystals, armor, whatever I needed without asking. I was having lots of fun until I started to resent one of its members.
Ryzom was a relaxing game for me to just to talk and chill with your guildmates... but this one guy ruined my experience. Seemed like I always had to group with him. He kept constantly whining and berating me for not playing to his standards. Anyways, I gave all the items they loaned me back to their guild hall and ended up leaving and probably will not re-register.
meh, I'm probably going overboard by leaving but yeah.. that's that. I'd think I would stick around if there were a little more people playing the game. Like in the island, I could always start a pick up group and meet different people but instead I'm stuck with one annoying dickwad though out the month. LOL.

I bought ryzom awhile back and i do truely want to enjoy this game. It does have a great community and the world is different and really unique. Every once in awhile I go back and check it out. It really doesnt change much. Ryzom is either an endless grind or a chatroom with mobs depending on how you look at it. There is very little to do in the way of quests or content. You group up and go kill similiar looking mobs for hours and hours for no apparent reason. While the crafting system is great it seems wasted on this game. If this game could have had a larger budget with a more experienced development team it would have been huge. Trust me when I say you have never really seen a world like ryzom...its that unique. To bad as it stands right now most people will never experience it. Its also a shame that game will probably never realize its true potential. I find it hard to believe this is how the game was supposed to be.
This is only how it is after a few years of finacial missmanagement by Nevrax.
We´ll see where Gameforge, the new Owner, will take it from here.
They promised to make it better. *hopes*
