WoW, myspace of mmorpgs?

why is WoW so popular?!? it's increasingly becoming the black hole of mmorpgs, even my friends that had nothing to do with gaming are getting into this game... I like this game but it's becoming so mainstream and it's like all my friends play anymore.... I miss playing other games... i miss the SNES style of ragnarok online, the cool system for leveling on SWG, the beauty, art and landscaping of 9dragons, the cartoony styles of FLYFF, the odd yet addicting style of MapleStory, and the fun quick "alright I can get a couple rounds in" on DANCE! online... but  most of all I miss playing with my friends on all of these games...  I keep  getting to about mid 20s on WoW but i just can't seem to get into it like all the other games i enjoy playing, yet i keep having to come back because all my friends play it (even the ones that the last game they played was mario...). WoW is totally reminding me of myspace, like all my friends coming up to me saying stuff like "have you ever played WoW?" and "hey I just made a character on WoW, you should join my server!" lol i don't really know where I'm goin with this but thought I'd take a break from playin and post a thought on it. and ask for everyone elses thoughts.....

as I raise my sword,
I call to the horde,
and make a single pledge.

that though they have many,
their blades are heavy,
and carry a double edge.

I think you must be like me. WoW is just so laid back easy and repetitive that your mind goes numb from bordem and then if you make a new toon its the same old drag after you leave the newbie quests. I just can not stand this game I no longer play but most of my online friends do and its sad I will not go back ever.

lol ya I totally agree, i can't really stand it either but i feel forced into playing it because all my friends do.... lol not like peer pressure but it just gets lonely playing a diff. game that none of my friends play, then hearing all their stories of the random raids n questing n gettin together n bullshizzing n stuff.... like i get on WoW and end up just chillin n talkin more than i actually play the game anymore because it's such a drag, yet i don't wanna miss out on whats goin on with mah buddies...

So you don't like the popular things.

McDonalds is popular, Wow is popular, Myspace is popular and heterosexuality is popular.

    j/k

lol personally I like taco bell... but no it's not because it's popular, I do enjoy the PVP that system was done nicely, it's just i like to broaden my horizons of mmorpgs but i also enjoy the company of just running quests with my buddies... how did I give the perception of not liking popular things anyhoo?

It's a game, doesn't matter to me who plays it.  If I enjoy it I do it, and if I don't then I won't.

If you're taking a break why are you on the internet, on a gaming site, starting a thread about it?   Is that what you call a break?

I myself am here because the bloody servers are down and I have the morning off work, my apartment is already spotless, and it's too cold outside to leave until I have to...

What's funny WoW has a myspace.com page.  This game is nothing but a peer pressure social club for highschool kids.

    OP:

Yes too many play this game "because my friends does" and not really liking it themselves.

This IS a huge factor. It's like, the more people playing the more people will automaticly play it.

A MMORPG does not need to be good to be enjoyed if friends plays it. And that is the case with WoW.

I picked up the 10 day trial just to play with a friend that newly got the game. But I would never ever in my life pay for this game since I say it's not worth it for it lacks so much depth and content.

    WoW has PVP.

    Player VERSUS Player.

    NOT Player VS ENVIRONMENT.

Get back to me when you understand.

    I won't hold my breath.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

Lets see according to your profile you are 24 years old.  You have been out of high school about 6 years.  I don't think you have room to talk about high school.

I am 61 and I play WOW and enjoy it.  I also wish I was back in high school.  Knowing what I know now (sigh)

I wouldn't say all games : /  I think a MMORPG should keep me entertained and addicted for at LEAST 5 years.

the only reason WoW is so popular is cuz there isn't ANY learning curve. It is the easiest MMO ever made. Its catored to the person that plays 2 hours a day
