Yup, heard that on a podcast (virginworlds i think...).
They were talking about SOE next big thing and they might concentrate on publishing and hosting games now.
I know what game I wont be pre-ordering. I now will have to wait for the reviews to try it. I suspect alot of people feel the same way when dealing with SOE now. It isn't as if SOE had a fine reputation before SWG, now I know for sure and wont be prey.
It will be an interesting test of a popular IP againt an unpopular company, if true. If the Star Trek Online game has the lackluster launch tha Vanguard had, it would be evidence that SOE's reputation is harmful to any game associated with it.
Curse you SOE!!! Poor star trek, it didn't deserve such a horrible fate. Hmm, I wonder if people will still buy it because it's star trek though.
I'd be suprised it it doesn't attract some Star Trek fans that don't normaly play MMOs as well as some that will have to play it because it is Star Trek even if SoE are involved. I do know one huge Star Trek fan in my guild that won't play it if SoE are indeed the publishers though.
Not many people make the effort to know a few details about this.
1) unlike Vanguard, SOE will not run the servers that will run Gods & Heroes. All that SOE will do (actually, not SOE as we know it, but Sony Platform Publishing) is take care of producing the discs and boxes and advertisement for the game. PERIOD. Outside of that Sony Platform Publishing wont have anything to do with G&H.
2) there hasnt been any announcement if SOE's Platform Publishing will have anything to do with STO. But I would not be suprised if they end up with a similar deal as they have with Gods & Heroes.
Perpetual will run its servers, run customer support, etc. If there will be anything similar with STO it will most likely be in the same fashion.

I don't want to cause trouble, but isn't that what was said about Vanguard? (that SOE would have nothing to do with the actual game and it's all Sigil)...
*edit* If that's true, then people are bagging on SOE for nothing with regards to Vanguard's shortcomings.

I cant comment on what has changed with SOE and Vanguard because I have not looked into it in the past. I have learned though that SOE is not in control of Vanguard in a programming or game design sense. Another thing to take note is as I said earlier, SOE as we know it and SOE's Platform Publishing are two separate companies as you can say Sony Electronics and Sony Records are different companies.

SWEET.................. Is jedi gonna be a starting class?
LOL... man how sad is it that it's funny you said this or that it happend like that.
NOTHING would suprise me with SOE.... if they got thier hands on this, it would be another title forseen as getting ruined.
I hope for them that this does not happen.

*ding* *ding* *ding* We have a winner! When a crappy book is written who do you blame? The author or the publisher? Same should apply here. Now SWG was a joint LA/SOE venture, and MxO was made by WB and bought out by SOE when it was about to go to the great MMO heaven. VSOH, however is a pure Sigil venture with SOE just publishing it. If the game is crappy, blame them not SOE.
Look, I can't see how this surprises anyone in the least that SOE is trying to get these new MMO's published through them, this has been there plan for awhile now. I know we vets on here have discussed and debated this on numerous occasions. In fact I distinctly remember saying this is what SOE was going to be doing in the future.
They are going to suck up as many games as they can support, especially in the two biggest MMO genere's (Sci-Fi and Fantasy) and add them to their Station Pass Access. With that plan, customers out there that want a variety or want to change games for a bit can still continue to pay SOE monthly and get a break with a new style game (Sci-Fi, FPS, Fantasy, etc). Why pay two monthly fees when they can pay one and get almost any style game they want?

But you are missing something. SOE runs buisness and when they see how Blizz did it with WoW they get some ideas (we know what happend). In there little twisted heads they don't give a s*th about us - players that want a bit more complex game. I mean... What... We make mybe 100K? 200k big playerbase? Ok... 500k. What's that when compered with WoW horde of 8mil kiddies. Ofcourse they gonna go for iconic shit becouse they think that's what kiddies love. Doesnt matter that avg. age of ST fan is way above 20, they gonna piss on current fans that would play the game in hope to make 8mil of new kiddi fans that only want a reskined WoW.
Every time I read your post, I die a little inside...

Yeah I can see them wanting to host and publish other companies games.
To be honest, SOE sux at game development. EQ1, SWG, and the people who worked on them was from Verant, SOE just ended up buying VI and got those games under their banner. The games SOE has developed on their own, EQ2 and Planetside, have had less than stellar results.
And for every person that buys a game to use with Station Access, I'd say theres another person who WON'T buy it because SOE is involved with it in any limited capacity. Their well known terrible customer service won't be making them any friends either.
Just so you ladies know, even a simple publisher (printing CDs and boxes) can still pressure the game to be launched too early.
If that were true then Gods and Heroes would have been out already. Perpetual is taking its sweet time with that game. Look at how much time Blizzard took with wow and it ended up being one of the most, if not the most polished and bug free MMOG ever.

Unfortunitly taking a long time or putting off release to work on it more doesn't gurantee that the game will be any good when it comes out. Dark and Light put of their release a few times and Auto Assault put theirs off 6 months.
