Posted on January 1, 2007:
"Tracy Spaight, lead designer at Rapid Reality, developer of the forthcoming Africa MMO, sent me an update today on the project's status. Things are looking up for the unique game, and while it didn't launch in 2006 as promised, Spaight is confident Rapid Reality will eventually prevail.
Spaight said that Rapid Reality's original management team erred in plotting out a timeline for the game that couldn't be fulfilled, and that the Kaneva platform--originally adopted to alleviate programming chores--has been scrapped in favour of a more flexible engine. Rapid Reality is now under new management and creative direction, and has acquired X-src, maker of the Aura 3-D engine the project will now be built upon.
The project now has a more realistic timeline. "To build Africa on the epic scale it deserves, and with the game mechanics we want, is going to take us a couple of years," Spaight said. "I've been open with the community about the fact that the game is still in the design stage. We're laying the ground work to build it right."
Spaight pointed out that Rapid Reality is launching Phylon, it's first MMO title, in Q1 2007, which uses the same technology planned for Africa. Spaight said that having this sci-fi title ready for a closed beta this month "shows that we can execute," adding that "Rapid Reality is filled with lots of hard-working, passionate people who are committed to making great games. Being an independent developer is a tough business, since our resources aren't infinite, but we're proud of our recent progress and we are excited about the year ahead."
Is that EA2/Phylon closed beta started yet?

My favourite part of the quote above is:
"Spaight said that having this sci-fi title ready for a closed beta this month [i.e. january] "shows that we can execute.""
