So I will let you guys know what I think shortly. I am hard to please with MMO's. EQ2 is an amazingly well done game, but just seems like it requires way too much dedication. WoW is better about casual play. But I don't like the environment near as much. I have been wanting something in between.
I'll let you know.

um, you can read all over the forums and find them, there have been plenty of player made reviews, majority of which were highly possitive, as well as the hype meter comments as there is many more positive things to say about LOTRO than negative, however if you want more of the actual "Trustworthy" comments go to Lotro.turbine.com, we appear to have a huge problem with haters here who will do anything to make you second guess yourself.
But from my view i see that this game should be well worth the money, from the screens, to the revews, to the crafting, PvMP, and the whole setting of it all, as well as not having any performance issues. This one looks like a sure-fire hit.
If you like that kind of thing, you'll probably love the game. It's just not for me.

I dunno if this is, you know, etiquette-friendly...but given that there are people no longer using their beta accounts, and people that have yet to get beta keys but would like to try the game out...

It might be an issue. Pretty sure swapping beta keys is still against policy. As to what Turbine will do, who knows. Most proably deactivate the key once that key figure out its not being used by the person it's supposed to be. Either way, there is an open beta coming up soon with enough time to figure out if it's for you or not and be able to order a copy before launch. You can even drop $5 at Gamestop or EB games, get a pre order and get early access to the open beta. That way if you decide you like it you get the benefits of the pre order Founders Club. If you don't like it, cancel the pre order. *shrug*
By the way, much respect to those who have said that it is a solid game, just not for them. It's very easy to take the immature route and rip a game "just because" in a situation like that. Keeping with the facts and then saying it just isn't for you gets much respect from me, not that I'm anybody. Just wanted to let you know it is appreciated.

I didn't quit because the game sucked. It was one of the best betas among many that I've ever been a part of. The game itself is excellent and the graphics and sound is spectacular. As a Tolkien lover I found the game was really well set with a lot of attention paid to detail and getting it right. Tolkien snobs will be just fine and I predict this game will draw in a horde of people who've never tried a MMO before.
That said I did quit and won't play the game at release. The problem for me is that I'm an old MMO player and I'm looking for something new in terms of mechanics and gameplay. While Monster play and the LotrO classes are unique, it just isn't nearly enough for me.
If you just want to play in middle-earth or play another EQ/WoW style game done right then play this game.
If you're looking for something different in terms of gameplay or the next "generation" of MMO then look somewhere else. Another than a nice twist on classes and PvP this game doesn't have anything remotely new to offer.
I expect this game will be Turbine's biggest success in the MMO market by far, their previous games don't light a candle to LotrO. I expect this game will be more successful than EQ2 and has the potential to rival WoW in time if after game development is good (it won't rival it at launch). I personally simply have no interest in playing that type of game and I AM looking for the next new MMO that wants to do things differently and not follow in the EQ mold.
There isn't a whole lot else that can be added to an MMO to make it unique. I am an old school MMO'er as well, and I absolutely love LOTRO so far. They are getting the basics right and there is plenty of unique flair as well.
Personally, I have been waiting for a game to stick to the basics but do it right. I think Turbine has done it here. Classic DAoC'ers and EQ1 people will probably enjoy it, but if you are like the previous poster I suppose it will be more of the same. I just think this game actually executes better than just about any others out there.. so far.
