Already been posted. I've never turned to gamespy for real reviews. Certainly anyone who churns out a review of a MMORPG after only two weeks is not to be taken seriously - True professionals like gamespot take a month or more to review MMORPGs.

They're also full of shit with "uninspired graphics" - It's a stylistic choice to go for realistic high fantasy, and it looks awesome on highest settings.

Obviously that's someone who didn't spend time getting around to see what is really out there, nor do they recognize the beauty inherent in Vanguard's realistic environments.

You can keep your candyland WoW graphics.

I agree. Gamespy editors should go back to WOW.

I thought this was an excellent and fair review.  Other than the comment on bland graphics, it was primarily based on fact and not opinion.  Potential new players would do themselves a favor by reading this review first, and then making the decision on whether or not to give the game a try in its current state.

In fact, this game DOES have "uninspired graphics". What graphics there is looks nice, but it is all the same. Repeated over and over for miles. And once you have seen one grassy hill with afew trees and rock, you have seen 90% of the game.

Where are the themed zones with different and unusual scenery like EQ2 and WOW have?

This part of the review pretty much says it all:

There are a few interesting set pieces to discover, but much of the game has you exploring muted backgrounds and boring environments ad infinit

Damn right! About time we had a serious MMO with serious graphics for serious-minded people. Wait, what's this...

do you just speak to hear your own voice?  the different continents are vastly different, in landscape and architecture. even the weapons and armor you craft and find appear different depending on what region it comes from. player housing and ships do as well.

so, in kojan alone how bout visiting Cai'al Breal and then go visit Martok.

this is such a clueless response.. "uninspired graphics".  I doubt you played much past viewing some biased screenshots (and looks at the above post for his confirmation).  Tell ya what, google who Kieth Parkinson is and his relationship with vanguard.. play the game for ..oh lets say a couple of hours then come back with an opinion

No they are not. The landscapes are all basically the same with different style buildings overlayed on them.

Where are the places like Lavastorm, or Nektulos forest, or the swamps, or .. or anything but rocks and grass and hills?

yes, they are.  and your response shows how much of the game you've played.

    thanks for playing along!

A fair review, for a change.

Funny to see the Vanboi's blow a fuse over the truth.

While the continents really do differ in terms of overall look and feel, I sometimes feel that not very much detail is added in the gameworld. It's pretty hard to describe, but in FFXI cities just felt more customized from one another. Maybe they had to keep the number of graphical details down in the game to keep it running better, or maybe I just need to play more. Don't get me wrong, I love the game and am going to continue playing everyday, but it's going to be perfect when they sort out the bugs, enhance all the animations and particle effects, and give the world a more unique, customized, passionate feel to it.

A fair review. It points out many of the issues that I currently have with the game.

Really the first fair review the game has had. I think it's funny how the Vanbois are now saying that gamespy isn't a reputable place for reviews since they had an "average" grade from them when just last week many were saying they were waiting for gamespy and gamespot to give a real review.
  • smg77smg77 Member Posts: 672
Let me get this straight. Gamespy gives the game a *very* generous review and the vanbois still aren't happy?
  • airheadairhead Member UncommonPosts: 718
@ gimpusmons.... .... That got a good laugh from me.

Wait, the guy's only real negative was the graphics. That's not that bad, it's just a matter of opinion. The rest would be the bugs he comments on, which are inherent and, from what I've gathered even from the "VanBois" (give it a rest, people) are prima facie. That seems, to me, a cogent review.

The game has bugs, McQuaid looks like an ass saying that he released an unfiinished game as if that were laudible, and GameSpy's review calls him on it. So what? The game can get better later on, which is what the fans of V:SoH should be focusing on. Not some ephemeral review score.

"People ask me, 'are you launching a finished game?' and the answer is 'no, we're launching a game that is good enough to launch, but it's not finished.' And that's why I love these games: because they should never be finished."

On this point, I have to respectfully disagree with Mr. McQuaid. By their nature, online role-playing games are constantly evolving, but they should still bear some semblance to a finished product. Even by the standards set by other games in this segment, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is plagued by more issues than the growing pains that all MMO's experience after launch.

Very good Review!  Right to the point.

I totally agree with the reviewer that MMO's evolve with added content, but should be as close to being a FINISHED product as possible.

Unfortunately, releasing unfinished games which customers should never have to pay for has become the standard in this industry.  It's like buying a magazine subscription and for the first 6 months, they only send you half of the magazine!  Once an MMO has launched, it should be available to be reviewed that day.  If the customers are paying to play, it should be reviewed immediately so that prospective customers know what they're getting in to.

Maybe then these companies would think twice about releasing buggy, half-finished products.  I am NOT referring to Sigil or Vanguard, since I do not play the game.  I'm talking about the industry in general.

    There are no zones.

Each continent is different. Thestra is more forest, Qalia more desert, Kojan is more like the grassy fields and hills.

There are places where you do crest a hill and you stop and stare at some of the really cool areas. Pyramid-shaped buildings dotting along the valley, a huge fortress carved into a mountain-side, erupting volcanoes, a temple....high, high atop a hill. These are just in one area of Qalia....go out and see stuff, stop being blinded by some of the interconnecting content.

The land can't be populated every inch of the way, that would seem....odd. There are concentrations of mobs in areas, which makes more sense. Even so, you need to pay attention to where you go because there could be something right ahead of you that will kill you.

Having no zones means the land has to change gradually, which is much more realistic then clicking a bell and being in a volcanic wasteland.

Wow, you people needs your head examined...

I play VG, and guess what?  This review is 100% dead on...  All you twerps with your panties in a wad need to go for a walk...

I am glad they mentioned the elistism factor, as it is apparent on these very boards...  Face it, you Vanbois never get laid, you have no friends and VG is the center of your small and shallow little world...  Don't take it out on us because the game was called out for what it is...

And yes, this is SWG all over again...

You're full of shit. A perfect example of someone who hasn't actually gone out base the newbie area they started in to see how diverse and incredible the world really is.

Then show us some screens of these themed areas you say exist.  All screens I have seen are rocks/grass/ponds/ocean.
