COH: Worth purchase?

klaz20klaz20 Member Posts: 40

I'm basically sick of mmporgs. Still, I've been playing them almost constantly for 5 years, and life seems somewhat adrift wthout something to play at those odd moments. COH has received some interesting accolades from posters here, but that was during Beta.

Now that it has left Beta, is this game worth purchase, or is it just another case of release before its ready? How many peope here are going to purchase and subscribe to it?

from what i know it is hack and slash game, but you are not fantsy hero, you are some comics superhero, like on americans movies, if you like hack and slash (and virtualy nothing more) in that realm its game for you:)

I have played Beta, and while I thought I might get sick of the game fast due to lack of crafting and items I have found it great fun, and I am buying it even though it is a real pain to get shipped to UK   If you are sick of MMORPGs and are looking for something a bit different I would definately recomend CoH.   It should be a great game for the casual player in that you can pretty much get into missions and so forth right from the start, and casual groups are always easy to find.

If when you do get the urge to play occasionally you want to go forge a sword or something then it is not for you, but the gameplay and fighting is just sooooooooo much fun image (this coming from someone who usually ALWAYS makes crafter/clerics) that I would heartily recomend it.   If you do want to get deeper into the game the supergroup missions and HQs that are being brought in with the first expansion should add alot, as will the ability to have a player villain and engage in PvP (which they say will be totally voluntary)

In some ways it has been released before it was ready, in that alot of things in the City of villains expansion really could have been in the original game, however gameplaywise it was smoother already in Beta than some 'finished products' and there should be more than enough content to keep people going till the expansion comes out.

Can anyone tell me how it runs under a 56k modem connection? Unfortuently, Broadband/DSL isn't available in my area as yet (Ireland).

Dont know what your smoking but pass it this way. The money is in the form of influence.

Welcome to the world of MMORPGs. Dont think I have seen a MMORPG yet that you did not upgrade something in some way or the other.

Not to mention no "rare" item drops, except thsoe upgrades, the phrase you used "upgrade... upgrade... upgrade" sommes it up pretty decently.

im not going to be buying it.

i was in beta for about 5 days, by the last day i didnt even log in. personally its to simplified of a game.. the char creation was awsome but thats probably where i spent most my time lol.  the gameplay is ok but there is nothing after the 1st 14 levels worth going for... there is no end game, there is no real way to improve your char like health, defense ,strength you say its in form of infuence but all influence are is a potion you use it, you get bonus to health defence accurace or strenggth for about 15-20 seconds.. thats not enough for me.

i recenlty downloaded the AO trial actualyl im on day 3 of it now, im pretty impressed, i say you go download AO, its a free 7 day trial. I might try out CoH but not for awhile i want to see how people will be whining after 3 weeks.  as you seen people are lvl 14 after 1 day. there is no end game no pvp so whats the point.

Im sick of these oversimplified games which you learn to master in few hours. MMORPG:s are supposed to be played for years but there is no dev team which would truly challenge us with something which would separate the good players from the bad. Stats which you earn just by playing make you better. Player skill doesn't matter at all (and Im not talking about twitch skills here)

I was dissapointed with this game. No content, no tactical gameplay for ppl over 10 years old.

CoH i'd have to say is one of the worse games i've played. Sure, its fun for a bit, being some superhero with cool little spells, err...powers. But overall, its like lineage2 with no PvP, no items, and anything else that would make a game worthwhile.

CoH is the biggest level grind i've ever played. Why? Because that is all you can do, level grind, there is absolutely nothing else. Shoot, kill, shoot, kill, shoot kill, X200. Hey! I made a level! I'll go back to town and level up, then come back and do the same thing.

I'm just not sure yet. I wish I had more time to beta test... I only got into beta about a week ago and now it's over. :(

I'm currently waffling between CoH and L2, the two games I've tested recently. I can't rationalize buying both at once with my current lack of fundage...

I think the problem many are having with the game is that they aren't used to playing an MMORPG that is just fun. Any grind in this game is simply in your mind. The game if fun from creation, to the low level quests, to many of the skills you can gain. You don't start out whacking rats outside the city gates and running to the guards all the time, you start out taking out villians. CoH is just flat out fun.

Now, I don't see where it is going. I don't see what kind of end game it could have. I see no reward that could be worth the risk of dying once you are maxed out, but then again, I see no penalty for dying after you are maxed out either. But leveling up in this game is fun, which makes it about the opposite of every other MMORPG out there where leveling is a boring time sink and there is nothing really to do until you are max level.

Of course, the end game can always be added later (not too much later though), but the game is fun to play right now. Too bad so many other companies are making boring games with no other purpose than to max out your level. Hopefully some of them will figure out that people want to have fun from day one, not after months of boring slaughter.

I wasn't a fan of COH at all before I got into Beta. I got into Beta for 4 days, just because I was bored and wanted to check it out. I was pretty surprised, because I had a lot of fun. I did like Freedom Force game, but I didn't wear it out.

Yeah, there's the killing mobs, levelling up grind - but I find that in every game. I thought it was nice not having to upgrade my armor all the time. It is nice to keep your powers enhanced, and lower level enhancements don't really help out once you get too high for their bonus - but more of these enhancements can be found or bought.
Missions were fun, as they seemed to follow a storyline. Better than some missions generators that are just the same thing over and over. Bad guys phrases and vocabulary was entertaining. All the different superhero costumes was entertaining. The city landscape was a nice change from my usual fantasy settings.
I agree that it's not a big, in-depth game with tons of things to do for crafters, weavers, miners, cooks, and cheerleaders (well, I can always use a cheerleader or two!) but it was fun for the 4 days of hack, slash, blast, and level upping that I did. I'll probably buy it at release to play around with some more.

I don't see how it could keep my interest for a year, or longer, but it's good entertainment. I want to see how badass I can make my little midget superhero, so I'll be picking up the game sometime in May and checking it out. Something to do on weeknights after work without becoming addicted to it like a crackfiend.

(Oh yeah. I have an old computer, and was surprised at how nice everything was on it. Athlon 1.3G, with 512M RAM and geforce 4, 64M on it. Of course, I did get some clipping. Other people I'd group with could see the bad guys further away because my sight was limited in distance, but it ran good. Surprised me again)

yes in all mmo's you do upgrade, but there is a different thing to it..

you get to BUY things..with MONEY!

both of which you do not get to do in CoH

Some games have gold, some games have plat, some games have credits, CoH has influence. Money by any other name is just money. In some games you buy weapons or armor to increase your damage or defense, in CoH you buy enhancements to increase your damage or defense (among other things). So, in CoH you DO buy things with money just like other games.

yea but it's not the same..

there are no arrows, there are no bows, there are no new weapons until you level

and the level grind is so terrible, that it takes forever to get those new weapons!

all the shop sells are "buffs" so to speak..

a game with nothing but buffs...that's kinda wackimage

  • ghoulieghoulie Member Posts: 17

You want to have to spend money on things like arrows all the time? Yech. Frankly, I'm relieved to see a game approach their economy so differently. I'm sick of buying arrows all the time. ;)

Not to say I don't like other games that utilize a traditional approach to money. I'm currently deciding between CoH and L2... but I find CoH's "influence" refreshing.

Ok, am I the only one who got sick of a game because you having to run around killing stuff for four hours just to be able to buy a new helmet. I will buy this game as the character customization means I don't have to spend like twenty four hours a day trying to level up just to get good enough to be able to wear that cool looking helmet that I'll never be able to afford. And who would want to spend years on an MMORPG, I know alot of people have but I would get bored with any of them out there now... Too slow paced. That's one of the reasons this game looks cool... Maybe this was a little off topic but I was not the first to veer off course.

  • ghoulieghoulie Member Posts: 17

I'm gonna veer a little off course topic-wise, with Kuzzle. ;)

I've learned enough about myself over the years to realize that I'm not going to spend forever in an MMORPG. I'm just not dedicated enough. I probably won't ever reach the level cap in any game I play... ;) I played Anarchy Online for a solid three or four months. I enjoyed the heck out of it - it was definitely money well spent. So I got bored after a while... I still have the sofware and if I ever decide to resubscribe, I can. Right now I'm just looking for a fun game... not a lifetime investment. ;)

  • feedtherichfeedtherich Member Posts: 105

Granted I have never played a MMORPG long enough to get close to the level cap. However I believe this is due solely on the value of the game. The longest I played a MMORPG was AC, which I absolutely loved, except housing issues and customer service forced me to be a martyr. I am still waiting for the perfect game to come along, and when it does I know I will stick with it.

I decided to move this from General Discussion to the City of Heroes forum. Nothing wrong with the post at all, I just think it will help to remove some of the clutter in general discussion image.

Yep, the idea of a no economy MMORPG is not apealing to me.  Even though this is a nice game, this game lacks fundamental keys that other games have.

    1. They don't have items.  This game is SKILL driven.

    2. No money, no economy.  Alot of the time MMORPG games reflect the economic standing in where the base of the players are from.  There are factors like inflation, scamming, and cheap deals.  To me finding a good deal, and selling items is a skill in itself.  And when you take that factor out, you lose lots of the business aspect of the game.
