You won't see me, because no matter what it looks like, it actually isn't very fun at all.

I bought it, gave it three months, then dropped it becuase it was a waste of money. Graphics are alright it but like MorrowRail said, it actually isn't very fun at all.

Well FFXI is definitely not for everyone.  Then again, no game ever is.  It really depends on what type of games and gameplay you enjoy.  I'm no hardcore mmorpg guy or anything, but my current employment "requires" me to be involved with the FFXI community, and as such I have experienced the game, and a taste of the community.

I personally have played several of the previous FF titles, and enjoyed each one.  But, if you're expecting an even better reincarnation of those titles, you may be surprised, or disappointed.  While the previous off-line titles had a "set" goal in mind of game completion, being an MMORPG, the nature of FFXI is much different.

I've read a lot of posts flaming this game, but at the same time, I've read even more informative positive feedback.  I don't have enough in-game experience to provide a full overview of what you should expect, but I can back up points made on both sides, pros and cons alike.

First off, most of the flames are players who seem to have jumped to conclusions from their brief playing experience.  And as far as I can tell, the majority of players who find distaste in this game are power levelers, who like to rush through and build a character quickly, I myself am that type of person.  But again, the focus of this style of game isn't to simply level a character, I don't care what game you're playing, simply playing to level a character is never fun.

And, while I do agree, that the mobs (mobile objects) do tend to get a bit monotonus, you're bound to find some monotony of that degree in any game if you're only trying to get that character leveled.  However, if you bother to actually take the time and role play a little, the game is awesome.  If you actually allow yourself to be immersed in the universe, you can really appreciate all the work that has gone into the game.

And I'm not just talking about the NPC's (non-player characters) and mobs and environments.  Even the community can be great.  And just like real life, you have your jerks and your samaritans.  People who enjoy interacting with others will enjoy what FFXI has to offer.  People who like to explore and see just what they can really do or find out on their own will find a lot to enjoy.

BUT, if you're like me, and enjoy faster-paced, action-packed gameplay only, you will find this style of gameplay rather dull, hence most of the flames you'll read in the reviews of the game.  Yes, it does get repetitive killing the same monsters over and over.  But you know what people, killing gets repetitive eventually no matter how many different sprites and mob builds exist in-game.

So to summarize, the value of this game depeonds on the player.  If you like games that you can play for an hour or so and get your fix, THIS IS NOT THE GAME.  HOWEVER, if you're looking for a new experience, or simply want to immerse yourself in a FF created universe and enjoy it for all its worth, you SHOULD DEFINITELY PICK THIS GAME UP.

Ok now for some side notes.

For all of you who complain about the mix of jap and amer servers, there is reason for it.  To bring the two gaming communities closer together for a richer experience, SQUARE ENIX developed a universal translator and allowed for the mixing of the two players INTENTIONALLY.  Granted, the universal translator is by no means perfect, but for those who can remember the cmd line (I already forgot what it was, I'd have to check a manual), it can provide the necessary communication without too much trouble

For those of you who don't know, before you click that agree button, be sure to understand what you're "signing".  Like the post about saying something alone the lines of "It doesn't say anywhere that if you cancel and are inactive for 3 months that your cd key is dead and you have to buy a new copy."  Yes, that is true, after 3 months of an account being inactive (meaning subscription cancelled for 3 months), not only is your character information lost, but your cd key AND account are no longer useable.  And you all knew this when you clicked agree =P

Thank you for defining mobs (mobile objects) and for explaining that I am jumping to conclusions after barely playing the game. Also, for posting the longest post ever. It is well documented here in this forums (mobile objects) that I played the game for the trial period before cancelling out of not-fun-ness. If someone is going to charge me $50 (the price of any single player game) to try a game for a month before additional charges kick in, it better be fun for the month. FFXI was fun for a week, but I kept playing (even after it wasn't fun anymore) out of the hope that things would get better. I am NOT a powerleveler or anything like that... just a regular joe who wants to play fun games. This is my story. Apologies for all the parentheses and for posting while pretty drunk.

From what I understand, it began as Mobile object, meaning monsters or characters that could roam freely around game areas. Over time it went on to mean any killable creature. Yup yup

Well I bought the game one month ago and till now im very happy with the game.
But if you think you can buy and play it directly you are wrong lol, it took like an hour or so to install it, then you need to register like 3 times and a lot of patching but then if you did all that the game is very cool to play.

Some people say lvling is boring, well each game that is based on xp wich you need to gain from fighting is like this, only those who don't have the patient to lvl say that it is boring.

Some say you can't play alone, can agree on that won't say it is impossible but it's very hard and it goes much slower then in a party.
So for those who like to play alone don't buy the game cause it will spoil your fun.
Other thing that you need to remember that if you need to party it also means it isnt so hard to find one(some classes get quicker invites then other classes but overall it's pretty easy)

Also when you make a character you choose a job like warrior, monk or mage but you can always switch between all kind of jobs, so if you play first a warrior wich you maxed then you can always choose another job and start all over again.

If you look what you can do beside lvling a whole new world goes open, but those who quit after 1 or 3 months probly won't see that all since most only think about lvling and lvling.
You can join a lot of guilds in wich you can advance your skills and then make all kind of items, wich oyu can ofcourse sell at an Auction House.
Also you can harvest in the ground for items and also fish for fun and money.

As for the traveling I could agree that they should made it better since you first have to lvl till 20 to get a license to travel faster on a chocobo.

But overall iI think the game got great protential and if they introduce the pvp(probly in 2 months or so if I hear all the rumors) then the game would be very good to play for a long time.

^^^ /snicker.  Wait another month then get back to us.  The low lvl part of the game is the best (not saying much).  Once you realize youre fighting the same mobs day in and day out for eternity, and the fact that theres 18,067 clones who look just like you with the same gear, it gets old really fast.

this game is great it worth buying because like all the final fantasy there is lots of down time, and u should not get bored if u are out meeting new pp and doing missions. the controls are  some what hard when u first start out, but u get use to it fast. the only down side to this game is the $13.oo a month. other than all that the game is great

    PS. Be a monk

hey it is really worth buying. im a level 8 redmage. i started a week ago and i got the hang of it already. also its much better to get the computer version because its less diffucult to usee than the playstation 2 version. for the playstation2 version you have o open chat windows and everything. with the computer version you just type in waht you want to say and press enter. deffinetly get it for computer if you get it. ::::08::

Nothing against original poster but i ll never understand why people ask other people if a game is worth buying. I myself love the game have a 61War/30Sam and enjoy it alot, but that doesn t mean you will . This game is for sure not for everyone just like WOW isn t for everyone all you can really do is try it and see, but i will say this if you don t have alot of time i would say it s not for you very in depth game alot involved. Well anyways good luck on deciding:)

that's complete bs man. final fantasy is *definitely* not the first online rpg game. that's so innacurate it's not even funny. that's like saying president bush invented the democratic party.

I may be wrong but he may mean that its the first rpg into online game. In which case he is very correct.

However, if that is not what he means than he should correct himself.

Is this game worth buying? Probably not,not unless you're a diehard final fantasy fan. There is TOO much terrain to explore and it takes FOREVER to lvl up. Battle system is like every other mmorpg, auto attack. When I went to my friend's house and watched him play ffxi, I got bored REAL quickly, because all he was doing was exploring, chatting, more exploring, and more chatting. But because I'm a diehard final fantasy fan,I'd probably get it,but I can't because of that stupid monthly feeimage. But apart from these flaws,I'd say it's a cool-lookin' game, but the only bad part is that after about 3 or 4 months you may get bored with it.I'd probably give it an 8.5/10.

Note:Think twice before playing Final Fantasy XI

to tell you the truth i dont know if it is or not... i tried it at a friends house and in that 15 min of playing i think it sucked but i was never a ff fan so i dont know if my vote counts.

I love FF and I thought FFXI got really boring. Well... I loved every FF game except for 8. That one doesnt count.

See that's the problem with this board (and most boards). If you had read the thread before piping up,  instead of just reading the last post, you would realize this has been addressed like six times already in the same thread. He meant the first FF mmog.
